At the grocery store today I stumbled across something reduced for quick sale and I bought it. It is Plainville Farms brand boneless turkey breast roast. The "roast" part is throwing me. It's in a net-like bag and the ingredients say fresh turkey breast. It was originally over $16 and the reduced price was $6.48. The back says freeze by 7/15/14, which of course I will do.

Full disclosure: I bought all 4 that were left. All are varying weights over 2 pounds and originally $6.98/lb.

So is this a true bargain, and is it simply a turkey breast? I haven't unwrapped it yet. Any suggestions for cooking?

Thanks!

Sounds like a full turkey breast that just hasn't be cut down into smaller portions.

Its just a turkey breast, sounds like you got a great deal.

It's just the breast, no bones. It's good eatin' :D I like just the breasts because we won't eat an entire turkey at once. Sounds like a great deal to me! If you have a deli slicer, you can slice it up once it's cooked for sandwiches!

Bake it in the oven, with the net on, then take the net off before you slice and eat it.

Bake it in the oven, with the net on, then take the net off before you slice and eat it.

OP, is the netting inside around the turkey or outside around the wrapper? And, is the netting plastic or string that can be heated by cooking?

I cook the turkey breasts at 350 for 1-1.5 hrs - to 180 degrees bc I am paranoid (thawed, no net, no bag :rotfl:). Then I refrigerate it overnight, slice, and heat in the oven with chicken/turkey stock. Very juicy!
It does not re-freeze well after cooking - the texture tastes weird when you reheat it after freezing, so I'd just thaw and cook 1 or 2 at a time - whatever your family will use up in 2-3 days.

If you have a large enough crock pot, I always cook a whole turkey breast in mine and it's juicy and delicious! Not really the healthiest way to do it, but I throw in whatever seasonings sound good with some butter (and by "some" I mean a generous amount haha) and a little water. If there's room I also throw in veggies (onions, carrots). Love my crock pot!

We have very specific recipes that we use cooked turkey in, and specifically prepare the meals, freeze and then thaw it/cook it when we are going to eat it. This works for a turkey chowder and a turkey tetrazzini. I don't think we have ever just frozen the turkey alone, and then wanted to reheat it at some other time.

The one I have purchased (and described how I cooked it) had a string type net around the turkey, not a plastic one

The net is on the inside, over the turkey breast itself. I guess it gets a little awkward to package without bones in it, hence he netting.

Thanks everyone for your help! They are all in the freezer for now, but we look forward to smoking/baking/slow cooking them. :woohoo:

I've had a few that were not one big breast, but rather lots of small pieces smooshed together and held in place by the net. It freaked me out when I started slicing and chunks were falling apart. I looked online and found that some brands do this, and it is perfectly fine. SO if that happens, at least you know ahead of time! It turned out to taste great.
