HI I had my mom buy my dd a knock off rainbow loom from plum district for $12 a couple of weeks ago. Just worried that it will not work like a regular rainbow loom and she will get frustrated. I have heard there are no directions included. Any experiences yet? SHould I get her a real one instead? I don't think you can return those?

Those rainbow looms are pretty simple. I don't normally endorse knock off anything... But my friend put a few thumbtacks in a board... And her kid makes as many bracelets as anyone else using a home made "loom"

Here's one of many homemade examples from you tube. This one actually put together by a kid! As far as instructions, I'm sure you could download some paper ones off the internet if your child isn't allowed on you tube

we have the real one and the directions stink. I always pull up a you tube video when my son wants to make one.

The problem that I've heard of with some of the knockoffs is that the casting of the pegs can be sloppy, causing sharp vertical surfaces at times. That is a problem because it will slice the rubber bands. You could always fix that with a fine emery board, though.

We have both a knock off and the real one. The knock off came with horrible instructions- the kids (DD(7) and her friend) gave up after 5 minutes, and the adults spent 2 hours trying to figure it out. BUT- after all that, the adults after resorting to the internet found that the actual Rainbow Loom website has step by step instructional videos for several designs. THAT made it easy. Had we found that in the first place, we would have been done with the first one within 10 or 15 minutes. Once you have it figured out, the simple ones are easy and with the video, it isn't hard to make the more complex either. All you have to do is get on the rainbow loom website and watch a video and you will be fine!

I went ahead and bought a real one later because I found it on sale and it looked better in the videos we had been watching (plus you can use 2 together to make more intricate designs, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to have 2). The real one is better quality. The hook is sturdier and the pegs are made where it is a little easier to get the hook down into them to get the bands. Although the real one is a little better, there is nothing wrong with the knock off we have either. It is fine. In fact, because DD learned on it before I bought the real one, it is the one she uses. I'm the one that uses the real one- because now I must conquer the more intricate patterns! ;):rotfl:

We have the real one and it works really well. My daughter tried the knock-off one at a ToysRUs Saturday and didn't like it as much.

My daughter has the real one, but she's never even looked at the instructions - she's learned from YouTube videos from the start. So I wouldn't worry too much about the instructions angle. I can't speak to the quality of the knock-offs since my mom bought her the real one before they blew up and got all super-trendy, but it really is a neat gizmo. Her class is even selling the bracelets at school sporting events as a fundraiser for their winter camp.

My daughter has the real one and her friend has a knock-off and her friend's makes smaller (shorter) bracelets. They are a little tighter on my daughter's wrist. Not sure which brand the friend had. It might be fine if your daughter is small. (My DD is 9 and average size.)
