Question about ironing?

I have my shirts and I am going to try this week to print, and iron one of the designs LisaBelle made for me and my family.

I just had one question. What surface to iron on? I have seen posts where people suggest not to use wood and iron boards, so what is left? I have a silestone counter top, so I don't really want to chance ruining that. I do have a pretty old kitchen table that probably needs replacing, but it is wood. What do most people here iron their's on? (Oh, and I am using dark transfers. ;) )

Thanks! :)

An ironing board is too soft.

You want to find a hard surface covered with a pillowcase or thin towel.

I do not know about the wood. I wouldn't do it on a nice dining room table, but I do all my ironing on my wood desk covered with two pillowcases and after almost two years, there has been no sign of damage.

I hope this helps!

I've ironed on both my sister's nice dining room table and my cheap dining room table -- both are stained wood. I put a pillowcase (doubled) underneath the shirt, and I saw no damage to the table. :goodvibes When I ironed a design on the back of a shirt I'd already done the front of I put a cutting board inside the shirt to make sure the heat didn't mess up the already ironed part of the shirt. :thumbsup2

heartbeeps said it took the finish off her table in her steps to ironing on dark transfers thread, but I'm not sure what the finish on her table was. :confused3

Thanks for the replies. I think I will try it on my kitchen table. ;) It is about 17 years old and it is just light plain wood, no stained wood. (I want to replace it, but just no money in the budget right now. ;) )

Joanna.......What kind of cutting board did you use to put between the shirt? Was it plastic or wood? Would the plastic on melt if I tried it? (I wonder if I can put the plastic cutting board in a pillow case and then that in the shirt and it work?

I used a plastic cutting board, but I don't think it's plastic like we normally think of plastic. It's really hard... cutting boards are made to work as trivets too -- or at least the ones I have I use like that. So they withstand heat well.

Thanks Joanna! The plastic ones I have are really thick, hard plastic too, so I should be ok. (If not, I have a bed bath and beyond gift card, and I can always buy a new one. lol )

We used a pillowcase and ironed on top of our dryer. We figured the dryer can withstand enough heat. Worked great!

I ironed on my designs (following the instructions) and when I peeled the backing off more than 1/2 the design did not iron on. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I ruined 3 shirts. PLEASE HELP:confused3

What kind of shirts / iron on transfers are you using?

I used the HP Dark transfers and have not had any problems which is shocking b/c I usually end up screwing up any type of crafty projects.

The same thing happened to me last night. 1 out of 3 turned out (and I've done this before). I thought about putting more heat on once I realized they were not good. Thought I would check here. We leave tomorrow morning. Any suggestions. Thanks!
