Question about iron-on transfer and fabric pen

Hi -- sorry if this has been asked before!

Long story, but I will not have access to a color ink jet printer to print my iron-on design. It's okay, since it's all black with just a little red. However, I wanted to use a fabric pen in the part that is supposed to be red after ironing the design on the shirt.

Should I go ahead and iron on the entire design, then use the fabric pen on the parts I need to be red?

OR, should I carefully cut out the part that needs to be red before I iron on the design, leaving the fabric exposed so I can use the pen?

Thanks! I usually just do the design, iron it on and go, so this is stumping me.

Do you have a spare shirt to try a sample of the iron on to see if they red will stay on the iron on? If not, maybe on the inside seam. I'd be concerned, unless you use a sharpie, it might not hold. (even with a sharpie, it might not be dark enough)

It sounds like the shirt is red. I think the easiest thing would be to cut our the red part and let the red shirt just show through.

Thanks -- I don't have the shirts yet. I bought some, but two of the three didn't fit. Soooo, I'm back to looking for shirts. I may go with red and just have the black iron on. Thanks for your help.
