I have two teens DS is 19 will be 20 in a couple months and DD 16 just turned. I have a 2207 car and my DS been driving a 1998. DS went away to college more than 100 miles from here shortly after DD received her license. I carry full overage on the 2007 with no/100 deductibles. 1998 carry only on the other guy. Suppose to get a reduction on DS since he is away at school-here is the kicker, I get my new bill and the insurance on the 2007 was raised tremendously, the 1998 stayed about the same. So I call the insurance agent apparently you can not have two youth drivers on the same car so they put my DS on the 2007 and DD on the 98. The 98 didn't reduce increased by about 10.00 ( although I thought girls were suppose to be cheaper). I did go on line and with progressive the ins for the same coverage will be over 400.00 cheaper for 6 months.

My question is has any one had this happen to them the insurance company telling you you can't have two youth drivers on the same car-any Insurance agents or anyone that has experience with this your input would be greatly appreciated. I did tell my agent about the quote and I was met with well you get a discount the first 6 months when you do it online-my reply was yes it stated that and it was 50.00-still would make my insurance cheaper, they then told me I would lose my homeowners discount-to which I replied I will move everything-then all of a sudden it was well let us see what we can do-this was yesterday morning when I spoke with them and haven't heard anything back.

My other option if I can't have 2 youth drivers on 1 vehicle is to title my DS23 93 jeep in my name(he has 3 vehicles) and put one of the kids on it. We would figure what he pays now for it and what the difference would be and I would pay that. Ialso told the ins agent that I would put one of his vehicles on mine and she says well it would have to be titled in your name DUHHHH. I guess the attitude for everything I said has me kind of mad. Oh and I have been with this agent since I was 16 when I was on my parents insurance, my dad had his insurance with them until he passed away 7.5 years ago, and then my mom had her renters ins with them when she went to assisted living for almost another 5 years. Several relatives went with them after my dad did. I reminded them of this.:confused3

My question would be what if you only had one car? If my kids ever decide to drive, we only have one car, so all 3 of us would drive the same car. I always though that they would put the on as a non-owner policy.

That doesn't make any sense - it seems like every driver in the family should be insured on every car. Did you price switching DD and DS - I wonder if being a girl would be cheaper on the newer vehicle.

I have a 2207 car

So, what are future cars like? Do they finally fly, like my elementary school teacher promised by the year 2000? :rolleyes1

If you have as many cars as drivers each car is assumed to have a principal driver. Our agent rates DS on our oldest vehicle. We have been with the same company for many years and have all our policies with them so we get discounts with that as well as discounts for no accidents. They had some sort of young driver safety program where DS watched a video and kept a driving log which he turned in to the agent and that yielded a discount. He also has a good student discount. Insurance tends to cost more for those under 25. The company is rating the known risks for young drivers, not how long you have had policies with the company, so the agent can only do so much for you.

This is a good point.

What if, since you do have 2 cars, you don't allow your 2 kids to drive one of the cars? That you have the one vehicle expressly for them to share?

I think you're getting some hooey from the insurance carrier and, yes, I'd look around for a carrier who can insure your vehicles the way that you want them to be insured.

Oh, my mom had a similar problem with her longtime insurance carrier. She used Erie for over 30 years for vehicles (as many as 4 at a time for a while) plus she had homeowner's through them. She got in a minor (talking parking lot, both backing up at the same time, meet in the middle of the aisle, 5 mph, bump) accident and they jacked her rates up as if she had just totalled a brand new car!! :scared1: She moved everything and saved a ton of money on premiums. Sometimes the carriers get a bit complacent or even overconfident with their policy holders. Ya need to slap them awake and walk sometimes!

Insurance agent here...

Some of my companies allow me to assign drivers to vehicles while others do not.

As for the non-owner policy, in NC, you must add all licensed drivers in the household to the auto policy even if you only have one car.

Some companies are of the opinion that anyone living in your household has access to the car regardless of whether or not they have permission to drive it.

Exactly my thought also what i I only had the 98. I could title the 07 in my DS 23 name and drive it. My understanding anyone can drive your car if you give them permission. My DS 23 carrries his own policy but lives in my home.

They can drive either car you just have to state which one they primarily drive. Cheaper on the oldest. They told me it was cheaper to insure DS on the 07 then my DD

Well yeah sometimes it does fly:drive:

I only have two vehicles my 07 which i drive everyday for work and the 98 which my DD 16 drives for school cheer dance. DS 19 is over 100 mile away at college and only home occasionally then he drives the 97. DD will get a ride then or drive the 07 if I dont need it(which she is allowed to do)

Both my kids get the discount for have taken drivers ed and they both also get the good student discount.

Yes I know young drivers cost more to insure-but when talking with others I feel mine if overly inflated especially after getting the other quote and it was over $400.00 less for 6 months. Being loyal to a company should earn you some sort of discount.

Just checked my HO ins and they have my home over insured.

Here in the south, each youth has to be assigned to a different car. I would assume if you only had 1 car in your household than eveyone would be on that car. It doesn't mean they can ONLY drive that car, heck, you can let your licensed neighbor drive you car if you want. Try insuring a 16 and 18 year old at the same time along with you and your husband! Right now it just us and our 19 year old and we pay close to $4000 a year...

Exactly on getting the hooey I think they think I won't change.
They had an answer for everything I said, of course this came from an emplyoee that has not been there that long, not from one of the owners.

Two years ago I had a problem with the company that wrietes the insurance they credited a full 6 months premium to someone else's account. I had hell getting that straightened out-they wouldn't accept a copy of my check that i printed off from my online account. I had to get a statement from the bank , if that wsn't a PIA.

Thank goodness i pay monthly now-i have about 10 days to decide what to do. Stilll have not heard back from agent, so their chances of keeping my insurance are getting slim o none.
