Hi - I have been reading everything I can on this board learning about DVC. And I understand that the best use of your points is at the DVC resorts. However, I am thinking that if we purchase into DVC, we may want to try to do an exchange through II at some point -- possibly for Hawaii.

From what I read it would be best to put the request in 1 or 2 years in advance. So, if you do that, when do they actually take your points from your account? For example, if you put your request in 2 years in advance then are you spending the points 2 years before your trip. Or do they take the points when you actually go on the trip?

Thanks for you help :sunny:

They take the points from your account when they find a trade that you agree to. You have to accept the trade before the points are taken.

Isn't there a "deposit first" option, too?

My understanding was that you could choose to do it either way - wait until you found a match you liked and then "pay" or deposit your points and then pick something up to 2 years later. Those who choose the second option are usually trying to use points that would otherwise expire.

Best wishes -

There is but it would be nuts to use it unless one were going to lose the points. Deposit first with DVC is VERY complicated and risky, IMO.

kmc33, HI is tough, especially for Maui or a 2 BR. But it can be done in may cases if you give them a number of weeks and resorts ahead of time and plan 1-2 years out. I think the only one's in HI that are on the DVC list and trade 2 years out is Kona Coast resort. I think the rest are 12 months maximum though at times Marriott owners have been able to deposit at 13 months out.

For all of the responses. The information on this board is so helpful!! I will probably think of more questions. In the meantime, I have learned a lot from reading.
