Question about groceries

I have friends using my points in December. Although I've talked to them about the DDP, I think they may be interested in getting some groceries down there to save $$$. (The guy is finding out how expensive dating is. :rolleyes1 ) Anyhow, they're only lukewarm about the DDP because of the expense. I know there are delivery services available but I'm not sure which are most reasonable and of best quality. Can anyone offer suggestions as to choosing a grocery delivery service and how do we go about it?

Thanks.

Janet

Thanks, Spiceycat. I'll check them out. Do you have any idea how much the delivery charge is for those other sites? I know the DVC store is pricey.

GardenGrocer and WeGoShop are two entirely different concepts. You need to think about which one suits your needs better.

GardenGrocer has a set shopping list (a very extensive one). You pick the items you want off their list. They charge a $12 delivery fee, which is free if you order more than $200 of groceries.

WeGoShop is a shopping service. They'll go to whichever store you specify and search for whatever items you indicate. They don't have a set list of things to choose from. They charge a fee based on the number of stores you send them to and the total amount you spend. The more you spend, the higher their fee. Fees start at $17.

One big advantage of WeGoShop is that you can send them to the Super Wal-Mart and get groceries as well as any other items you might need but not want to pack. Ice chest, beach towels, other things Wal-Mart sells that grocery stores don't.

Buying directly from Disney is expensive and their list isn't as extensive as the other services. However, the big advantage is that you don't need to be there for the delivery. They'll put your groceries in your villa, and even put the cold stuff in the fridge for you.

I think that for what they'd buy they'd be better off to get at the DVC store or just do the dining plan. It's just the two of them. My experience years ago (when I had rented a car) was that we ended up wasting a lot of the food we had bought. I keep trying to convey to my friend's fiance that he won't save all that much by buying offsite when it's just the two of them.

If you buy direct from Disney, can you purchase beer or wine??

we are a family of 4 w/little kids so we aren't fans of sit down dining. if your friends want to spend every night having a fancy dinner, then ddp may work for them. we loathe to spend time eating when we could be at the parks or in the pool so our mo is not about eating rather all about riding. having said that, we definately find having groceries delivered is so much more convenient and definately less expensive. we had good luck w/gardengrocer as has my sister-in-law. we like that they deliver to your room when you want them to.

They actually aren't adverse to skipping the big meals either. I guess we'll need to make time to sit down and decide if the DDP is something they really want to do. We did book the Candlelight Processional but that's something they can pay for separately and I held some priority seatings for them but those can sorted through and they could keep the ones they really want. I'll have to go to this gardengrocer.com site with them and see if that's what they want to do.

This trip is more or less their "honeymoon"/wedding present from me and I hope they don't regret not making the most of their time down there by cooking in the room.

I think it all depends on what exactly they are planning on preparing in their villa. Last August, I used gardengrocer for a bunch of stuff...water, soda, bread, snacks, milk, half and half...that sort of thing. By the time I added the delivery charge, as well as a tip, I could have actually saved money by using the store at BW. I did bring those single serving cereals with me, but left most behind.
If that's the kind of thing they need, I would go with the DVC delivery service, right to the villa. But, if they want to cook more thant that, then perhaps one of the off-site delivery/shopping services would work out better.

I have been contemplating buying groceries from the resort or from Garden Grocer and I know this is crazy but Disney only carries Coke products and a week without my Diet Mountain Dew(I don't drink coffee) would not be good. I have decided to use Garden Grocer where I can get what I want to drink.
It is my first time so I hope it works out.

Where are they staying? There are 2 Hess convenience stores and people say good things about their prices. Just not sure what they carry. The resort stores do carry a lot more than they used to. We pack a lot of non-perishables and sometimes fruit and fresh veggies.
