Hi all,

We fly out in less than two weeks and I came up with a couple of questions after reading the TSA website (I'm petrified :scared: of flying so the more I know and have things under control the better.) We are only using a carryon and a backpack (as our personal item...and it will fit under the seat ;) )

Shoes: I know I'll be kicking off my sneakers going thru, but I'll have another pair in my carryon..do I need to take those out separately as well to be scanned? I'll also have my swim shoes with a rubber bottom - do those come out as well?

Electronics: I'll have my video camera (fairly new so it's really small) and my DH will have the laptop and his digital camera. These need to come out and be placed in bins by themselves right? What about the batteries for the video camera? Do I leave one hooked up to the video camera or should they both be off the camera? Does the I-Pod need to come out as well?

Not really a liquid BUT: I've got the 3-1-1 down and understand that. But I was also going to pack shout wipes. They are the individual sheets in little packets..do those count since they are wet (I know - crazy question but just wanted to be sure.)

Thanks for your help with this :flower3:

Not sure. :confused3 Hopefully someone else can help here.

The digital camera and the ipod can stay in the bag. The laptop has to come out and go in its own bin. I believe that the video camera also has to come out, but I have never traveled with one. Yes, you can leave the batteries connected to the devices.

Again, not sure on this one. But I would expect it would count since I assume that they are wet.

The shoes in your luggage can go through the x-ray inside your luggage. They just want the shoes you're wearing to also go through the x-ray.

Laptops and video cameras have to be removed from luggage. I know the laptop has to go through in its own bin. Digital camera and ipod can stay in the luggage. So can a cell phone if you have one in a bag.

Wipes are not liquid. They can be packed anywhere. I carry makeup removal wipes. I've carried them on I don't know how many flights and never a word about them.

Thank you for this - it does help as the site really had me confused about batteries and my video camera.

Thanks so much TDC Nala - you've really covered all my questions (that I have for this moment!) Good to know that most of the things I had visions of unpacking in line can stay packed.

I have a canon digital SLR (so a larger camera) the ONE time I didnt take it out, I got pulled off to the side for them to open and take a look inside. So it must've been the way it was sitting for them to decide they needed a closer look. Not a biggie, but it did get looked at. There are now certain laptop cases that you wont have to take your laptop out (I think it's in this forum, titled something like If you travel with a laptop) But I dont have one so I'll be taking it out. The vid camera I take out. I think there was usually a sign up that said it needed to be out..

i thought i read somewhere were batteries couldnt be in your carry on anymore? did i miss read or is this true? i know every time i have rechargable batteries or a camera in my carry on they pull me aside

Gotcha - ours is just a small digital Canon...it fits in the palm of your hand. I think I'll just have DH keep it in an outside pouch so it's easy to grab and take out if needed (I'm sure he'll want it easy to get at anyway so he can take pictures of me looking like this :scared1: inside the airport  ) I've also seen the thread about the new laptop bags, but we really don't travel enough (as evidenced by my questions) to go out and buy one. Plus the backpack from work will hold a couple of other small things. I'll have the video camera out then...do you also take chargers and batteries out or just the camera itself?

Hmmmm this is confusing then...I thought the TSA site had that it did have to be in carry on. If it helps I have the Li-Ion batteries and not straight Lithium.

Interesting, I have a Nikon digital SLR and I have never taken it out. It is usually in my camera backpack along with all my lenses. For some reason, I think that it is my external flash that confuses them sometimes.

I always try to have all my electronic stuff together in one bag...just in case. Then, when we get through security, it all goes to the person it belongs to.

When we came back last year (international flight not sure if that makes a difference) we had to pull out our video camera and our digital camera and turn both on to prove that they were working as should. My DS (9) also had a camera and had to pull his out and switch on too.

DD (5) had a new pair of crocs in her hand luggage and had to have them placed for scanning in addition to the ones she was wearing.

I have never once had to turn on my digital camera at any airport screening point in the world, and have flown over 100,000 international miles this year and more than that last year.

How strange, we had to do the same outward bound from Gatwick too, perhaps we just looked guilty :rotfl2:

TSA can look at anything they want to and make you turn on any electronics. If they ask you do do any of those things don't get rattled - they sometimes get bored and like the extra diversion. :lmao:

Spot on and at the end of the day they are only ensuring our safety on our trip to and from the magic.

Just came back from Orlando on Friday.

Both my digital SLR and my video camera stayed in the camera backpack with their batteries and extra batteries. Did NOT have to take them out.

Took out my laptop as they always want those out BUT there was a sign at the security outpost that had pictures of how the different laptops could be carried (different orientations of how the laptop could be sitting in whatever you're carrying it in) and it tells you which laptops need to be removed from their carrier and which can remain in them. I saw this sign in Orlando, not in Buffalo which is where I flew out of so it may only be in Orlando that you can leave the laptop in your bag IF it matches the description on the sign.

Ipod stayed in the bag too. Cell phone stayed in too. While travelling, I stuff my little fanny pack (with ID and wallet and keys and...blah blah blah) into my backpack so I'm going into security with a camera bag and laptop bag.

While I have never had to remove my cameras (still or video) in a very long time, they can always ask you to do it if they don't get a clear view in the x-ray machine. Or there's always a chance they're doing random checks or as somebody suggested, they're bored.

Carried Wetnaps in my backpack too with no problems whatsoever.

Thanks for this and I love the post about TSA needing an extra diviersion...hopefully they will take pity and not need anything extra when we go through.

I think we'll take the laptop out and make sure that the cameras are easily accessible to grab and send thru if that is what they would like. I'll let everyone know what happens when we get back (although we still don't leave for ten looooooooooong days.)
