I'm think about going back to school for radiologic technology in September. I'm 40 years old and completed several semesters towards this program back in 1994 - 1996. I never got around to finishing and now that my kids are getting bigger I need to do something. Have been doing the SAHM thing for 12 years now, aside from working pt retail and I need to get out of retail. I'm burned out from it and want to do something I enjoy while making more money.

I am going to go to the school next week to see an advisor to find out how many credits will be able to be transferred etc. I guess what I need ot know is how do I go about finding out how the job market is for this type of career? I don't want to invest time and money into this degree if the job market doesn't look good you know? Where can I find out this sort of information?

I would ask the school if they do job placement! Check job search websites to see how many openings near you there are, and see if they have any that require no or less then 1 year experience. Ask the school what percent of last years class has jobs. ANd once you see how many credits the school will transfer in for you, check another school just to see the difference. WHen I went back for nursing one school would take almost nothing, another school took everything, huge money saving and time saving thing for me!

I have a family member that does MRI and she has no problems finding jobs, does your program offer specialty training?

I would start by looking at the career section on the websites of local hospitals. I know that here in north GA the field is fairly dry - my hubby did rad tech for 11 years before he switched to CT, and you almost never see openings for either modality (or MRI). Also, if the school you'll be going to has a job placement office they can probably give you an idea of how often they get those jobs to post.

Good luck!

Jennifer
