Question about getting VDH add-on

Hi,

I have 150 points at Riviera hotel that I purchased directly from Disney about 2 years ago.

I would like to try to obtain 100 points when it is available on May 2 for the VDH (again directly from Disney).

My main question is whether I can use all 250 points at VDH at 11 months out. I believe the answer is yes. I would much rather travel to Anaheim than to Florida in most years, so am envisioning spending most of the 250 points each year at VDH.

Thanks!

Someone more knowledgeable than me can confirm but I do not think you would be able to use 11 months out. Those are only for your home resort and by buying VDH you would then have two home resorts - with each of the corresponding points only able to be used at the matching home resort at 11 months out.

No. You can use your 150 points at RIV only at RIV 11 months out, and the 100 VDH only at VDH 11 months out. They cannot be combined until 7 months.

Otherwise we'd all buy lots of cheap points, and a small add-on somewhere pricey and imbalance the system.

Home resort purchase is 11 months booking window.

If wanting to use Riviera points at VDH you will have to wait for the 7 month mark. The good news is that VDH is a large hotel. Not yet known but booking at 7 months for VDH "should" be a lot easier than VGC (which is likely impossible for studies and a definite maybe for 1 or 2 bedrooms).

Ok thank you all for confirming that it is not the case. That does put a damper on my interest in getting VDH, but I understand.

I have a few more days to think about it.
But.. you can always bank and borrow if you don’t go every year to both coasts. So like if you had 100 points at each (Riviera and VDH) you could use 200 at Riviera (and zero at VDH) on year 1 and the next year 200 at VDH (and zero at Riviera) on year 2, etc. The beauty of banking/borrowing.

Always remember that it is the points that have the home resort booking ability and not the owner!

Are you able to use the banked/barrowed points at the 11 month booking window even if it's not at the home resort? e.g. ff you banked the 100 at Riviera, could you then use 200 points to book at VDH the following year at 11 months?

No. Only the home resort points can be used to book a stay at that home resort prior to the opening of the 7 month window.

Something for you two to think about to drive the point home. If this were the case, everyone would have a small 25-50 point contract at every single resort. People would buy a 25 point VGC, BCV, BWV contract and then like 500 SSR points and try to use them all at these hard to book resorts. This would stop owners from being able to book where they own and create a huge imbalance. There are a finite amount of rooms and points at each DVC resort. Allowing for a bunch of SSR (or whatever cheap points come to mind) points to replace points like at VGC where the association is 1/14th the size and fill up their rooms would equate to owners not being able to book their home resorts at 11 months. This is why we harp on people to buy their points where they want to stay. Not, buy the bare minimum at each resort and then fill up on the cheapest points possible.

I thought that was the case, thanks!
