We are a large family with older kids who don't share beds really well. We usually stay @ ASMu in a family suite, but this year I am thinking of changing to the cabins. Mostly because my 11 year old thought FW was "beautiful" last year, and I would like to do something special for her this year since we will be celebrating her younger brother's b-day while @ WDW this year. There also seems to be a lot of activities there that the kids will enjoy. Here are my questions:

What "loop" do you recommend? We would like to be central to things (pools, activities, bus stops, etc)

If we rent a golf cart, which I am hoping to do, is there a place to park them near bus stops and activity areas, etc, so that we would not have to make the kids walk huge distances back to the cabin after long park days? FW seems dauntingly huge!

Is FW really that dauntingly huge?

Thanks!

Theres like 3 other pools besides the main pool which is actually down for refurb right now. Theres golfcart parking ALL over the place.

We did not stay at FW but we did drive through it, and I thought it was dauntingly huge. We also thought it was beautiful.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack this thread, but how do you get to the restaurants at FW? We drove (in our rental car) to a point where there was a sign pointing to the restaurants, but then we couldn't actually drive there. I wonder if you have to park at a certain area, and then walk the rest of the way. I thought this was confusing.

Nice to hear about the golf cart thing. My kids are wiped out after a day in the parks, they usually fall asleep on the bus on the way back to the hotel, so they are not the happiest campers on the schlep back to the room. Didn't know about the pools, but we are not going until Nov. (and, yes, they will swim even if it is freezing and they are literally turning blue) I read that the main pool rehab is adding a slide, so if that pool is the "coolest" one (think 12 and 9 year old) that would be the one!

Thanks!

Sorry to double post. We always use WDW transport. We were there last year for HDDR and had breakfast at Trails End (that's when my 11 year old really "discovered" the place) The buses and MK boat leave you close to the restaurant.

So does that mean I would take one of the internal FW busses and be dropped off near the restaurant facilities at FW?
Also, do you happen to know if smoking is permitted on the outside deck of each cabin?
Is this your thread, or mine?:rotfl2: Sorry, I'll bow out now, but thanks for the info.

No idea, we have never driven, but I do know that if you take the bus from a park or whatever, the stop is close to the restaurants. Don't know about the smoking, because we don't smoke, but I can't imagine that they could police tha in any way. I guess it would be akin to smoking on the balcony of your hotel room!

...and I don't mind the "hijack" at all. I've never stayed at FW cabins, so I am up for any "tips" anyone can give me, and maybe you or others can think of questions I am missing. :thumbsup2

We are going to be staying in a cabin in 3 weeks. There are 2 pools - 1 near the cabins and then the main one. They just opened the main pool this past Friday - it has a slide now and a hot tub. They are adding a splash zone and should be done within about 1 month or so.

Everything I am learning makes it seem like the cabins are quite a ways away from where the action is at - and you would either need to rent a golf cart or take the internal bus to get from here to there.

I understand what your saying about sharing beds, I am in the same situation - we will have my 16 yr old nephew with us as well as my 3 kids. I have no idea how I am going to sleep them - as the 16 yr old and my 14 yr old are not small boys. I had planned on them sharing and after seeing the 16 yr old yesterday - there is no way they would ever be comfortable in a dbl bed. Don't know what I am going to do about that!

It looks like a fun place but I am concerned about the sleeping arrangments and the hike to get from here to there. Oh well I guess in 3 weeks I'll know for sure!!!!

Please let us know when you get back, what you thought of FW.

FW is fairly large, but the internal bus system works well. Other than at your site and a 15 min parking area at the trading post the only place to park is at Outpost(where you check in). Driving at FW is limited to,to and from your site(with the trading post being the one exception), if you are driving to FW for dinner you are supposed to park in the Outpost lot and take an internal bus back to Settlement(area where the restaraunts and boat dock are). The cabins are in the loops closest to Outpost, two buses will service these loops, purple that covers the cabins to and from Outpost and Settlement. Orange buses also service the loops to and from Outpost/Settlement but also stop at the Meadows area(trading post, main pool and campfire area). Golf carts are a fun way to get around, but if you are going to be in a park all day it may not be worth $50/day for it to sit around at the bus stop or boat dock.

Not sure about smoking on the decks, sorry.

If you go to the camping board you will find lots of helpfull info on the campground in the FAQs sticky at the top.

FW Cabins are now our favorite place to stay, having replaced our beloved Poly. We stayed there twice last year and obviously loved it. I'll try to answer as many questions as I can remember:

Size of FW Yes, it's very big but with the bus system, it's very user friendly. Make sure to study the bus routes when you get there to learn which you want to take to go to different destinations. The busses all have a color, which indicates which route they go on. They are also designated either "Settlement" or "Outpost". This will tell you which direction they are going - either in the direction of the Settlement, which is where the marina, restaurant, Hoop Dee Do Review, etc. are located, or it is going toward the Outpost, which is where you catch the bus to all parks except the MK.

Children's activities There are LOTS of things to do at FW. As indicated, the main pool just opened back up and now has a slide. They're also working on a splash area which should be open within a month or so. There also is archery, horseback riding, lots of playgrounds, tether ball, the beach, organized games that are played at the pool and in the field near it, the campfire and movie at night.... You could really fill a vacation having fun at the Fort, but of course you might go to the parks some too....:rolleyes1 Oh, and there is also the pool in the cabin area too, but it doesn't have a slide - just the main pool now does.

Golf carts - Very fun and definitely worth it if you can fit it into your budget. With a GC, you really don't end up taking the internal busses anywhere. There is GC parking anywhere within the fort that you might want to go - both outposts, the restaurant (Trail's End - a buffet), both stores (the "trading posts"), the pools. Some of the GC parking even have outlets to recharge your cart (I know the parking by the marina does) so you can have a full charge when you get back to the park. You can also charge at your cabin. I'd plan to plug it in at least every night so you don't run low.

Which loop - I've stayed in 2100 and 2700 and for us, we loved 2100. It's the one that is closest to everything except the Outpost bust stop. It's also adjacent to one of the camping loops, so if you needed an extra shower or to do laundry, you can run over to their comfort station. We did this once and it was very handy. (I don't think there's a rule against that, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.)

Check out the map at http://www.disneycampers.com/Fort_Wilderness/FW MAP.htm . It will show you where all of the loops are in relation to all the rest of everything.

Smoking - someone asked about this. Yes, I think you can smoke on your deck but not inside the cabins. I'd be very careful of disposing of the butts, though, as I think Florida is still very dry.

In general, FW is a GREAT resort and I think you'll have a fun time. If you get a GC, make sure to go "looping" - checking out all the camp site loops. Some people stay at FW for extended periods of time and decorate their sites throughout the year. Halloween and Christmas are particularly impressive, but they have decorations other times too. The cabins generally don't decorate, but I always take my rope lights to put on the deck. It's fun coming home late at night to be able to see the cabin well before we get there. Here's me from our Thanksgiving trip last year:

The deck area is so nice to have, too. We hang out there while the kids are decompressing from a big day inside sometimes. (Wine tastes extra good at the Fort!) Everyone there is very friendly too - you'll definitely get some waves as people walk or cart by.

If I haven't bored you to tears, feel free to check out either of my FW trip reports (in my signature below). They have lots of thoughts on our impressions and love for FW as well as a good bit of pictures too.

Have a great trip! I'm very jealous of anyone who is going to FW sooner than May 2010! :sad2:

Don't let the pool hold you back now - it's back in business and better than before. There are several threads on the camping board about the pool, some with pictures of it with the slide in action.

We love hanging out at the pool too - it's such a nice break during the day.

lklasing is so correct with the information on the camping board- the folks there are very helpful and they can be quite hilarious as well. :lmao: I almost lost my job because of my preoccupation with the camping board threads.:rotfl:
We will stay at the Fort for the first time next month :yay: I chose the resort because of my memories of going to MK (when it was the only park) and not getting to stay at FW.:sad1: I did not even know about the pool until visiting the camping board and now it is just to exciting to bear!:cheer2:
Don't you just love dumb luck!

I am now a bonifide FF and I have never even been to FW!:thumbsup2

We almost stayed in a cabin last year. Here's a tip that I took to heart - get some window clings or flags and decorate your golf cart. Just don't use anything with stickers or glue that will hurt the paint job. If you have a unique decoration, you'll find your cart a lot quicker after a long day at a park!

From what I understand, the park buses don't go into the fort. They take you to the main bus stop at the entrace, then you hop onto the internal bus to your cabin (or hop onto your golf cart from there).

Good luck and have fun!

OMG, I just read thru your last 2 trip reports, and very much enjoyed both of them. I'm staying at a cabin in September with my mom and sister, and DS, and have a trip planned for May for DH's and Ds's birthday with my dad and Step mom, and are trying to upgrade to a cabin, for as much as I've read on them, I'm loving them more and more. Thank you soooo much for your TR's made the last hour of work go by very nicely!!!
