Question about fees for JB checked bags

So, if you choose the lowest fare option you would pay $20 for the first checked bag (as long as you check in on line). Now, it says $35 for the 2nd checked bag. So is that a total of $20 plus $35 for a $55 fee for 2 bags? Or does it mean you pay $35 in total if you're checking in 2 bags?
In other words, the first bag would be $20 then $15 more for the second bag equaling the $35?

TIA,

Karen

No, it means that you pay $55 to check two bags, and $20 to check one bag.

Remember that if you have two people on your itinerary, that the math changes: $20 for one bag, $40 for two bags, $75 for three bags, and so on.

You're probably better off just booking the Blue Plus which comes out to roughly $15 more for the ticket, and include one free bag.

I didn't book blue plus today. There are 6 of us flying and at the most we'd have 4 checked bags so that would be $80 (well $60 because one would be my moms).

I had been doing the calculations for the past few days and for me it's like the dining plan, it's not worth it.

Next time, you could make two reservations: one for the people who need a bag included and another for whoever only needs the base fare.

Thank you all for the information.
They'll be 6 of us flying, probably 3 bags. This seems so confusing to me. I must be losing brain cells...:crazy2:

jec6613, I didn't know this. Where can I find this info?

Thanks again,

Here's the page with all of JetBlue's baggage info. When they say a second or third bag, they mean per person not per party. So if you have four people traveling and four checked bags, you would pay $20 for each bag at online check-in or $25 per bag if you waited until you got to the airport.

Thanks Missyrose but I believe you forgot to put the link in :(

I could but then I'd risk losing that low fare having to do the process twice. As well as risk not sitting by each other if someone else scoops up the seat near us, of course I could choose a window and aisle at that point.

The other thing is I am not sure how many checked bags we will have or if we will do any. We may just do 1 with sunscreen, tweezers, etc... It's nice to not have to deal with bags on the plane, well for my dh since he is the one stuffing them above. So it would be a $$$ risk to buy 4 blue plus and 2 not if we only check a bag.

Airline flying has become so confusing, shoes off, shoes on, bag to big, bag to heavy, etc... I think they did weight limits because of me. I stuffed everything in that big suitcase.

Thanks for the input.

1. You run that risk anyway since airlines sell their fares in buckets. So if you are searching for 4 tickets (Blue) and there were 2 tickets left in the $100 fare bucket and 5 tickets left in the $125 fare bucket, you would be quoted the 4 x $125 price because there aren't enough tickets left in that $100 fare bucket to complete your order.

Buying 2 tickets in the base Blue fare would have netted you the $100 fare in that scenario. And then you would purchase the other 2 tickets for the lowest available fare bucket for Blue Plus (with the one bag each included).

2. Seating assignments aren't carved in stone, you can always go in and rearrange where you're seated for both reservations after you've booked. Simply go to "manage my flights" on the JetBlue site. It's very, very easy.

Also note that seat assignments are never guaranteed. If JetBlue changes the plane that route is flying, your seat assignments go out the window. So it's always good to double check that everything is still in place a couple of weeks out from your trip.

You know your family best, you know how much stuff they need. And if you don't, the nice thing is it's only about $6 more to pay for the bag at online check-in rather than buying the Blue Plus ticket. So not too much of a financial penalty for indecision.

I always do a search for one seat first this way I know what my goal is, lol!

I know seats are not set in stone. I had seats in the front on one of our flights in April. Well delta was changing planes and moved us from the front to the back. I was not a happy camper since I booked on the first day I could. I am sure I wasn't the only one bumped back. I constantly check my flights, especially the closer it gets.

Oh and I booked thru Google flights yesterday so instead of paying $500+ RT pp, it was $236 pp rt. There was no option for blue plus. I'll just pay the $20/$40 per bag as needed. The less we bring the better. We will go from PJs to bathing suits to pjs pretty much and laundry daily.

We did carry ons in April. My kids each brought a pillow pet plus a blanket and clothes, shoes, etc... I have learned to travel light and do laundry.

We did the same thing yesterday with the Google Flights prices. We had originally booked Blue Plus tickets that morning. Then I saw we could cut that total in half by booking via Google Flights, so we canceled the first reservation and re-booked at the lower price. The cost savings pays for our checked bags AND the Even More Legroom seats!

I didn't get the even more leg room seats. They were $50/person so that would of been an extra $600 I didn't need to spend plus that will be our car rental. I figured, we can get to Hartford early enough since our flight is mid day and we return from ft. Myers and that airport isn't huge. If we were flying home from MCO I wouldn't hesitate! We did that last time because our flight arrived home at 10:30pm and we wanted to be one of the first off. We didn't realize we got to bypass that long line at MCO.

The last time I went through MCO, they put so many ordinary people in the priority security line to make it less lopsided, that it took longer than the regular line ... I was not pleased.

Google flights....that's a new one for me. Sounds like something I'd really like to try, especially if the prices are good.
I just tried "googleflightcom" but I didn't get much more than a bunch of suggestions for other sites. Can someone please tell me how to access that site?

thank you,
Karen
