I have read on here, and heard from my real life friends, that their DHs were made to leave the delivery room while the epidural was administered. Anyone know why? :confused3

My DH was asked to leave for both

They told me because it was a sterile procedure they didn't want any extra germs or bacteria around. Personally, I think they don't want to deal with fainting men!

No, I have not heard that, but it could be because some men can't handle watching a big needle go into their partner's back without passing out! My DH could barely stay upright during the delivery process! :rotfl2:

Mine was asked to leave the room each time, I think it is a liability issue. My DH didn't want to be there anyways (he couldn't bear the thought of a needle in the back, didn't bother me a bit).

My DH was allowed to stay in the room. Of course, he almost passed out, watching the doc do it.

Mine didn't either time. The first time I actually used him to lean against. The second he just stood to the side. He was not asked to leave at anytime during my labor, delivery or recovery.

Mine was. They said they have a lot of father passing out from the size of the needle and all and that mom is their first priority so they ask the papas to leave the room. My DH is a paramedic who wouldn't have flinched but he left like they wanted him to. I wanted him there but at the time I was the epidural, I didn't care anymore. Just give me the shot! LOL

Now that you mention it, I think he was asked to leave the room! I didn't even question it at the time.

OT, but do they even have 'delivery rooms' anymore? Maybe just for c-sections?

Most people I know labor, deliver and recover in one room (unless they have a CS)

I would have to agree with you. When my friend had one done her husband almost passed out. So they had to rush over to him before he hit the floor. Which left only a couple of people to take care of my friend.

Mine stayed with me both times, in two different hospitals, one civilian and one military. It probably just depends on the hospital/anesthesiologist. I imagine if they do make the DH go out it is because they've had bad experiences with a husband fainting, yelling, or creating some other distraction at a moment that has to be extremely still and precise.

Mine was asked to leave also.... he wanted to know if he could come back :rotfl2:

I didnt mind... I mean it took all my energy to keep repeating... dont move... big needle... dont move... big needle... dont move.... big needle....

My DH had the choice to stay or leave--he decided to go and have a cig!! I told him that he needed to---On my 2nd child----major back labor---(the baby was pushing the curve part of my spine straight--and they had to puch on that to keep my pain down until the dr got there)I do not wish that on anyone!!

I had no epidural with my first---only a muscle relaxer

I was told it was because of the possibility of me fainting -- who was I to question a nurse? :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

Dunno...but I'll find out tonight. I have my hospital tour scheduled. I think I'll ask them the epidural question too. I just found it curious that it was okay to have the dad watch an 8 lb baby being squeezed out of a 125 lb mom, with all the accompanying blood and ooze, but not to watch the epidural. Seems odd to me. :confused3

I delivered in a "delivery room." My water broke when I was 35w6d. The hospital's cutoff for labor/deliver/recover in the same room was 36w. My Doctor tried to convince them to let me, but they refused. I pushed for about an hour and then they brought me to a delivery room with all kinds of people in there...precautions since I was 4 weeks early. Luckily we didn't need all the extra people...DS didn't spend a second in NICU. :)

My DH was also asked to leave when I got my epidural.

My husband wasn't allowed to stay in the room for the eipidural or the delivery :(

Of course, this was way back in the olden days when they didn't allow the husband to stay in the room when you had a c-section.
