Question about earplanes

We got some earplanes for our trip as we thought they might help make the flight more comfortable for our one year old. His doctor reccomended them to us and we found the children's size for him. I have a question, though, about how they work. It says to put them in before take-off, then take them out once we reach cruising altitude, then put them back in one hour before landing. The first leg of our flight is only an hour and a half long. I imagine that by the time we reach cruising altitude, it will be about an hour before landing. Do we need to take them out and put them back in for them to work? Or can we just leave them in for the whole flight? Does anybody know?

I wore them last year while traveling with a cold. They worked great. The flight was just under 2 hours and I just left them in for the entire flight. No problems at all.

I have been using earplanes for about 4 years now. I find it is easier to keep them in for the duration of the flight. Most of my flights tend to be in the two hour range so I just put them in when I get on the plane and generally take them out when I get out of the plane at my destination . I also find that they reduce the noise from the filght and that is often not a bad thing. You can still hear the announcements and people speaking just fine.

I think these are the greatest invention ever!

Thanks! One more question. Do we need to take them out when our first flight lands and re-insert them before our connecting flight takes off, or can we just leave them in from the time our first flight takes off to the time our second flight lands. I'm thinking that with a one year old, it might be lots easier to only put them in once!

As long as you lay-over isn't very long I would just keep them in. I love Earplanes and won't fly without them. Good luck!

HI Gem:wave2:

I have had severe air pain ever since I was a kid whenever I flew. No matter what I did, chewing gum, yawning...nothing worked. It was so bad I would be in tears because the pain was so bad. When I started to use earplanes I never had any pain. Ive used them for every trip and I thank God for them. If it worked for me then Im more than sure it would work for anyone. The good thing is that they are good for a round trip. Since you are connecting flights, I would take them out after you land and then re-insert them for the second leg.
I hope this helps!

Hi Gem,

I have done both. If the flight has been rough, I will leave them in between flights if the layover is not very long. I don't believe it hurts anything to keep them in. I just find that once I am off the plane it just feels better to take them out. They are not that hard to insert so you may have to see what your child thinks about them.
Good luck! They really do help!

Thanks. I'm thinking it might be better to just put them in once and let him forget about them. We'll have to see how it goes.

my husband uses the earplanes every time we fly. He puts them in as the plane begins to make it's way to the runway & he takes them out when the plane reaches its' cruising altitude. And when he feels the pressure start to mount (the descent has begun) he puts them back in.

They are definitely a life saver. When we went to Disney on our honeymoon, he didn't know about them & just tried to chew gum. He had a tingly feeling in his head the whole trip, and was very wary of flying home.

Whoever invented those earplanes was incredibly smart!

I'm so glad that I read this post. I have never heard of these earplanes before. (We don't really fly that much). We are leaving Sat am for WDW and I went out and bought them last nite for my 16 month old son. I was really worried about how he was gonna react to the whole ear thing so now hopefully these earplanes will help alleviate some of that pressure in his ears. Thanks for the tip!!!!!:wave2:

Hi! Just bought them last night at Wal-Mart. They were in the medicine section with the ear drops, ear plugs, etc. I think it was the aisle with the contact lense cleaners also. They were 4.23 for 1 set of childrens here in CT. Have a great trip!!1:wave2:

I purchased mine at Eckerd Drug Store here in NJ. They were about $5 for the children's size. Hope you can find them!

for those of you that are worried about your young children & flying...my pediatrician had advised me to give my kids a dose of dimetap or some other cold medicine to help their ears. Neither one of my kids have ever used the earplanes & they were both fine. And the cold medicine relaxed them I think, and my son slept the whole time. That could have also been because we were at the airport at 5am!

Just a thought!

I have never used earplanes on a child because I have always flown alone to visit my elderly mother 600 miles from where I live, BUT I have used them on myself. They are terrific. I have had problems in the past with my ears for days, even weeks post flight (tiny eustatian tubes) but have been perfectly comfortably since finding this product.
Every airport I have been in sells them at their convenience stores, just ask sometimes they have them behind the counter, although the price there is a step 9-12 dollars. Stop and get them at your local walmart or K-mart for $4-5.

If you clean then with a little alcohol, dry them well and store them carefully in the little tube they come in you can use them several times. On the box it says to only use them for you going and coming home flights and then dispose of them. probably because they might be contaminated with ewww, EAR-GERMS!
