My trip will begin on Sept 10 and end on Sept 18. We are planning Discovery Cove on Sunday Sept 11, Busch Gardens on Monday, Aquatica briefly on Tuesday, then a nap and Mickey's Halloween Party, US/IOA on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and finally Sea World on Saturday and back home on the 18. My question is, I am just wanting to book the DC with a hotel room this week and just buy the tickets for US/IOA and not do the packages or stay on site. How much am I missing by not being able to do the early entry?

Early Entry is the most important benefit of staying onsite (or through a partner hotel booked through Universal) for tackling Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The extra hour allows you to get a leg up on the rest of the folks coming in at park open.

That said, for your dates crowds shouldn't be all that bad. If you decide to stay elsewhere, then just get to WWoHP as soon as you can or save it for the end of the day. With three days at UO, you should have plenty of opportunity to take in WWoHP and the rest of the great attractions the two parks have to offer.

mesaboy2 is absolutely correct. It is still nice having early entry and express but it is not going to make that much of a difference in September.
