Question about demagnitizing cards?

I have read that the room key/ admission cards can demagnitize each other. Is this true, and if so how do I carry our 4 cards without this happening?

I hope this isn't a stupid question, it is just something I was a little worried about.

Thanks!

Haven't experienced that particular problem but I do know that if you clip your room key inside your cell phone flip it will demagnetize. Happened to me after going to the pool. :(

While it can and does happen, it is not something that happens all the time, so I would not spend too much time worrying about it.

Don't put the cards near your cell phone, other credit cards and/or magnets (most people forget that their money clip is a magnet... that is the biggest culprit). When you have all the cards together make sure they are all facing the same direction. Don't put the magnetic strips together. If you do have one get demagnitized the hotel front desk can replace it quickly for you, it is not a huge issue. If it happens at while you are at the park, they will verify what type of ticket is on the card and advise you to have the card replaces when you return to the hotel. It can take a few extra minutes, but it is not going to be an issue for park access.

I had to respond to this thread as this kept happening to me. Starting with my Dec. trip, my AP kept mysteriously demagnetizing - something that had NEVER happened to me in the past. Did all the usual measures mentioned above: kept separate from cell phone, away from other cards w/strips, etc. and still my AP kept wiping out. Turns out the snap on the front of my bag/backpack had a magnet - I just thought it was a good, tight snap.

So double-check your purses!! Thanks Donna (PandyPaws) - if it weren't for you I'd still be demagnetizing my AP!! :rolleyes1

Morning Barb.....same thing happened to me last summer. Had to get my pass redone and it was due to a fanny pack snap!!!

Go to Wal Mart or somewhere and get a package of pliable plastic sports card holders. Slip your passes in there and they will have some protection from the "elements". The hard sided cases work better but it's more difficult to get the passes in and out.

In September I demagnetized my card 3 times by having it in the same pocket as my cell phone. You'd think someone would have told me at the time that I should try to keep it away from the cell. LOL I learned after the fact here on Dis about that. So, in January I was extra careful, kept the cell in one pocket and the KTOK in the other pocket. I also kept our keys in the little envelope they gave them to me in when I checked in. This way I never forgot my room # (which I tend to do LOL) and I always knew the cards were in a protective environment. Never had a problem with demagnetized cards.

Our cards did this once on our last trip. I was told it was because they got wet. They were in my pocket and I sat in a wet seat on Splash Mountain.

I was told by GS there is a much better chance of passes being
de-magnetized by an outside source, than on each other.

They shouldn't de-magnetize on eachother. Otherwise, your credit cards would constantly be getting de-magnetized. A more likely culprit is a magnetic field from an outside source. I've read that cellphones can do it, but haven't seen any concrete evidence, and quite frankly, coming from an electronics technician, I don't see it as more of a threat to your MYW cards than it is at the gas pump.

We have never had a problem with the keys/cards getting demagnetized. We always carry them with the rest of our credit cards as well.

Mine got demagnetized loads of times last year, I eventually put it down to my digital camera, do you know if we can buy those lanyard holder thingies in the resort hotels?

I had the same experince as everyone else. I kept my room key / park pass in my fanny bag, With my cell phone. They demagnetized. Took the cellphone out the next day. Same thing. I could not get into the park. Had to wait 15 minutes. Finally only had my park pass in my fanny pack. Same thing. Three times in three days and by now I am FUMING!
Finally I went to guest services and the women there seemed to have seen similiar situation before. I explained that I had Nothing in my fanny pack except my pass. She looked at me ( I'm 6'1") and said that the reason this keeps happening is because the height of the fanny pack around my waist was the exact high of the metal railings around the attractions and THAT was causing the demagnetizing!!
That solved that! She said to me that she could not make up the money to me, but she could make up the time. She gave my wife and son ( the three of us) a guest service pass good for three attractions. Priority admission even over fast pass!!
The thing is the attendants are supposed to collect them when you enter the attraction, and they never did!
Indy was a 60-70 minute wait...we walked through in 5 minutes!

Pirates was a 90 minute wait. The attendant took us through the back gates and we were on in 5 minutes!

Same with several other attractions!!!!

The problems I had with the demagnetizing was the best thing that ever could have happened to us! We NEVER would have been able to do what we did that day if it was for getting that pass!

:thumbsup2 pirate:

In October, my pass also demagnetized 3 times. It was annoying and a pain, but really just a minor inconvenience. I never did figure out what was causing it. Guest Services was albe to replace it every day.

Never heard of this. BUT digital camera batteries and sometimes cell phones can demagnetize the cards. Happened to my brother twice before he figured out the cause. LOL
