Question about DCL luggage tags

This might be a stupid question but...I know most people fly down the day before a cruise. What happens if you put the DCL tags on before your flight, even though you don't board the ship til the next day? Could the cruise line end up taking them by accident? Or do they look specifically for a certain date/color tag on a certain day? Thanks!

I leave the tags off until the morning we head to the ship. That way I know they won't be grabbed and sent to the port by mistake.

My tags have always looked the same, except for the cruise details written on them. I can easily see where baggage personnel just see the DCL tag, grab it and put it on a truck headed to the port. I don't want to trust to luck that someone along the way will discover my bags are meant for a ship departing a day or two later.

Ok thanks--that's what I was afraid of. I know enough not to put them on until the next day, but I'm getting married on the Dream next month and I worry that some of my guests will put them on too early. I'll let them all know not to put it on before they fly and just hope they remember!

I would definitely let everyone know not to put them on until the day you are sailing. Congrats on your upcoming nuptials! What a great place to get married!

I think the instructions even tell you not to put them on before you fly unless you are boarding the ship when you land! Otherwise, the airport will sort them and send them to DCL.

First time cruiser here, am I suppose to receive specific tags for luggage? Thanks!

Yes you receive the luggage tags either through your travel agency or direct your house depending on how you booked. They come around six weeks from when you Cruise if I remember correctly

You will receive a small booklet with all the info you need and it will contain luggage tags. It specifically tells you to not put your luggage tags on until right before your flight if you are taking DCL transfers directly after you land. Do not put them on the day before.

Or, if you are flying down and taking your own transportation to the port then you put them on sometime after you claim your bags.

Or, if you are coming down any day before your cruise day you put them on before either giving them to DCL personnel at the airport if you are taking transfers or sometime before you drop them off with porters if you are getting yourself to the port.

I thought our little booklet was just more Disney advertising and didn't notice the little luggage tags tucked inside. My bad.

It also lists what Port Adventures you have booked, your flight info if you've provided it to Disney, etc.

on one of our recent cruises, I was waiting at guest services while there was a couple who were very upset that dcl had taken their luggage. it appeared that the family had a stay at wdw before their cruise. they put the dcl tags on their luggage before flying in and the luggage was picked up at the airport then stored until their cruise. they spent the whole time while at wdw with nothing and they felt it was dcl's fault. they were unable to get the luggage until they sailed. guest services just said 'sorry'. that was that. it was interesting to listen to.
motto of the story is.....don't put on your dcl tags until your ready to sail.

Guess they didn't read the instructions, as it does say not to put the tags on until you are headed for the ship.

Keep the book with you until you get to check-in at the terminal. On our cruise in San Juan in January security was checking ID against the names in the booklet (Vacation Summary page). Those without easy access to their booklets had to be verified by other means. We also had to show the same page to the check-in CM.

I don't think anyone was denied boarding because they didn't have the book, but it definitely speeded up the process of getting into the terminal and checking in.

Speaking of luggage tags, how many do you get. We are actually driving over a few days early. I was wondering if we need them for the porters once we arrive at the port.

TIA

Thanks.

Why am I not surprised that "you" (Shmoo) had the answer... You must live on the boards when not on a cruise. Thank you, you are awesome.

We had a print out of our online check-in so we didn't need the booklet. Before our cruise we stayed at the Grand Floridian, and bell services came up with some new tags for us so our luggage could be picked up by the DCL truck before we got on the transfer bus. Yes, it would have been simpler to have the tags but it all worked out fine.

If you don't have enough, the porters will have blank ones. You just fill them out with your name and stateroom number.
