Question about connection on Delta

Back in Jan I originally booked our flight for June 7th leaving MCO at 5:30am and arriving in Dayton at 10:30 with a connection in Atlanta. I checked my flight last week and they had changed our connection. We we going to arrive at 7:30 but our flight left at 7:00. Called and lady wanted to change me to a flight that only gave us 29 minutes and told her that was not enough time. She then put us on a flight at 8:40. I thought all was good...checked yesterday and now have been changed again to the flight that only gives us 29 minutes. We got our tickets really cheap...so cancelling and rebooking with someone else is not an option ..but what happens if we miss our connection?

If you miss your connection, they will generally put you on the standby list for the next flight to Dayton. This can be tough since you won't know until the last minute if you'll be on a flight. You may get on the next one, you may not.

A few years ago we missed our flight out of Bradley to Orlando due to a road closure. We had already not been able to get on the next two flights (we were a party of 6), so we just got on a plane to Tampa and rented a car.

So it's a risk. But I agree, 29 minutes is definitely not enough time in Atlanta, when you could be in different terminals.

Call again, 29 minutes is definitly too tight (probably or close to an "illegal" connection in Atlanta). They should be able to move you to another flight, either from Ohio-Atlanta, or Atlanta-Orlando. It would be better to have a secured seat on a flight resulting in a 2-3 hours layover, than risk missing your original flight and be standby, since planes are so full these days. Or, they could route you through another airport (New York or Cincinnati), maybe resulting in a longer trip, but still better than the probable missed connection.

Just be courteous, but firm, this is just not doable with kids.

And before you call again, first go back onto Delta.com and do some investigation on your own - find specific flights you can request/suggest when you call to make the change.

I just checked. Someone purchasing a ticket right now (just before 2 AM eastern, don't ask me why I'm up) has a number of official itineraries, including but not limited to:
Your original flight 1302, connecting in Atlanta to Atlantic Southeast's flight 4924 with a 2 hour, 59 minute layover;
One that looks even better to me, although none of the other available flights seems to get you into Dayton before mid-afternoon: Delta flitht 1310 departing MCO at 9:30, connecting in Atlanta to Delta's flight 1404 with a 3 hour 40 minute layover, arriving at 4:11;
Or, Delta flitht 1312 departing MCO at 10:30, connecting in Atlanta to Delta's flight 1404 with a 2 hour 40 minute layover, arriving at 4:11 (I like those because both legs are entirely on Delta);
Then there's Delta's flight 1308 departing MCO at 8:30, connecting in Atlanta to Atlantic Southeast's flight 4978 with a 2 hour 21 minute layover;
And a bunch of other options.

Twent nine minutes is not a do-able connection going thru Atlanta. We had 42 minute connections for our flights last trip, and we barely made them!

See which flight would work best for you, and call back. They should switch flights for you without giving you any grief.
