Hi,

When we go on our trip next year, we our starting our trip at Cocoa Beach and Kennedy Space Center. I've read that Melbourne, FL is actually a closer airport than Orlando. Has anyone ever flown into Melbourne instead of Orlando? Is it closer to Cocoa Beach? Also, how far is Cocoa Beach to the Space Center? Thanks, we just didn't want a long drive after flying across country, so if we can fly into Melbourne and save driving time, then we will do it!

Yes, Melbourne is closer to the space center, but in my opinion, the convenience of not having to swap planes to get to Melbourne is not worth the extra 20 miniutes you would save. Orlando Internationa l is right off the "BEE LINE" expressway that runs about a straight shot into I 95 then the space center. IMHO Melbourne is a nice place but not as convienent as Orlando.
Good Luck,
Zip

Actually, coming from California, there are no direct, nonstop flights to Orlando anyway. The layovers for Melbourne are about the same as they are for Orlando. I think I'm going to go for Melbourne since we really were not looking forward to an hours drive to Cocoa Beach after a long plane ride.

I lived in the Melbourne area for about 16 years. The airport there is tiny. There are not many flights going into or out of the airport at any given time. Talking actual distance Melbourne is closer to Cocoa. KSC is a bit of a drive from either airport. Tickets flying into and out of Melb. are usually at least $20+ higher than OIA. I would stick to Orlando for trips to KSC and Cocoa, and go with Melb. for trips in the Melb. Beach area.

The trip to KSC is less than an hour from Orlando and it is really an easy drive. You'll be there before you know it. Just don't rent with Alamo, the rates may be low but the lines are long. Have you considered your return trip as well. If you are ending up in the Orlando area you would save more time at that end of the trip than the few minutes you would save when you arrive.
