Question about Character Autographing

So I'm thinking of taking quilt squares and having the characters autograph those, so they can be made into a quilt to remember our vacation. What's practical to pack are 5"x5" quilt squares - do you think those are large enough for the characters to be able to autograph comfortably/legibly?

Sounds like a good idea. I would also pack a decently strong (but not permanent) tape and a piece of stiff cardboard to adhere the fabric to temporarily to make it easy to sign with a permanent marker. I'd imagine that just the cloth would be difficult for some characters.

Are you planning on using just the ink on the squares? Another fun idea would be to embroider over the signatures if you have the ability to do so--you could have a functional quilt without worrying about the signatures fading.

Yep, will definitely take some cardboard and either rubber-band or tape the squares on, and will probably take a few prepped boards that way so I can get multiple signatures at a time. Just planning on ink, and pairing the signature squares with old time B&W Mickey & gang character squares for a classic mickey kind of feel.

I would say the size is fine. I know some people who use 3x5" index cards, ear hats, mats for picture frames, and all kinds of things that are even smaller. I know for sure my kids have a few autograph books that are shorter than 5" on one side. I think bigger is better for the characters who have puffy hands, but you should be fine with 5x5 squares as long as they are secure on something stiff. This sounds like a very cute idea!

I think the size is fine based on the sizes of the signatures in my book.

I'd pre-interface the squares with some stabilizer. I'd bring a small clipboard. Use fabric markers.

Remember some characters (like Buzz) use a stamp, so those probably aren't going to work for your project, as the ink will likely wash out.

5x5 should be fine. Over the years the constant suggestion of how to sign fabric is that embroidery hoops work best. And as I understand it (know I'm not a crafty person so this is just what I've seen others post) that there are specific "Fabric markers" that you get at places like Michael's that work a lot better than sharpies (which never made any sense to me, because I thought that is what sharpies where for.)

If you go with Sharpies the characters like it if you stay away from the Green ones (something about the green that stains clothes bad) and the click sharpies are the best easy for the fur characters to get open and no cap to lose.

The size should be fine. I took my daughters baby blanket to DLR and had the princesses sign. I used a piece of cardboard underneath and it was 4X6. I just moved the board around as we had the next signature, no tape. I used the sharpie fabric markers in different colors. It turned out really cute.

One more thing...

You may want to get a water soluble marker from the sewing store to mark a quarter inch inside each side of the square. Then ask the characters to sign inside that square to allow for seam allowances.

As a quilter and embroiderer, I've done embroidery on 5x5 squares, and it's my personal opinion (from experience) that the size hoop you'd need to secure a 5x5 square tight enough to sign on is too small for 5x5 signature squares. Just my 2 cents. Bigger squares, it'd be perfect.

I got some manilla folders and taped my squares into those (4 per folder). It kept the squares from wrinkling and raveling and gave them a harder surface to sign on. Then the folders just got put in the backpack. It worked out great.

Here's my suggestion

Get a piece of plastic cut to size, 5x5, 6x6, etc (they have this at Lowes, for instance) You could try a mini-clipboard if you can find them small enough for the fabric to fold on all sides

Take your squares, the plastic and binder clips

Put the square on the plastic and fold the fabric under on all sides, clipping it tight with the binder clips.

That gives the character a surface to sign on and your seam allowances are folded under the sides of the board

We just did quilt squares when we went back in December. I think 5x5 is what we used as well. We had them on a mini clipboard with a rubber band to hold the bottom down. Worked great. Make sure to do a marker/fabric wash test prior.
