Question about cat's meds

Hi everyone:wave: You all seem so helpful; I thought I'd ask a question. I just took my cat to the vet. He has an eye infection. The vet gave me two different ointments to put in his eye. When I got home, I was looking at them, and on the box one of them says "For use in dogs only"! It's Optimmune (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP). What do ya think? The vet's office is closed now, so I can't call them. I'm supposed to put in Simon's eye tonight. Should I?

Jeepers. Is there an emergency clinic around that you could call? You know the ones that are open 24 hours? I have 4 cats and I'm not sure I would feel comfortable putting meds in their eye that said "for dogs only"...

I tend to agree with the above, either wait till you can get ahold of them or call another clinic.

My father inlaw is a vet. Many meds are marketed for one species or another. They can be used for different species, but they have not been "tested" by the manufacturer for the other species. If the vet gave you the meds, He/She probably knows what they are doing. Also many meds are made in large batches, so the updated information may not be on the older boxes.

There is also the possability that the meds may be shipped to other countries that require a specific med for each species. So the manufacturer labels them for that country.
