Question About AP Test Score

Admittedly I'm stupid on this stuff.

My DD was never a great student but did take one AP course her senior year. I got the score today and it is a "4". It has been forwarded to the university she will be attending in the fall. Does a "4" get her a college credit or must it have been a "5"?

I think it's 3 or higher. At least it used to be. It might be up to the college.

Depends on the college & the degree program.

I thought my dd was going to get ZIP. Turns out she is walking in there with 13 credit hours.

Granted 2 of those are Spanish. She tested into Spanish 3 and will get 10 credit hrs. from that because Span 1 & 2 are 5hr classes.

Now she could have just erased the For. Lang. requirement since she took 4yrs however that gets her no credit hrs., and she wants to be more fluent in the language.

We are working on the other credits that her degree program will accept which is some AP history class she took.

Basically it depends on the school. Way back when, we got credit for 4s and 5s.

You should be able to find out what is accepted by navigating your way through her university's website. I was able to find out exactly what tests were accepted, and what the minimum score needed to be for each test.

Awesome! Especially since you said she was a great student. I teach AP US and AP Euro--these tests are brutal!!

As a general rule of thumb--3 and better at state universities and small colleges. The private schools and more elite schools often require a 4 or sometimes even a 5 (crazy).

The only other thing to look at is her major--some schools don't allow students to use AP credit in their major. The idea being that high school teachers haven't taught them enough and they need the college experience. I'm sure $$ for the college is not a consideration at all!

I'm thinking you meant to type "wasn't"? She is a very mediocre student and a poor test taker. She has been plagued through high school with these issues. The AP class was in Psychology. She is a Sport and Exercise Psychology major so it is in her field of study.

Just checked the school's website (should have done that first right?) and it looks like they will accept a 3. So, wow, I can't believe she's going to credit for that. Never would have guessed it.

Christine, sounds like your DD will be receiving credit, good for her! Her studying and hard work paid off.

Just wanted to briefly weigh in, my kids went to state schools--different states. Both universities required a minimum of a 4 in most areas.

I hope you're having a well deserved summer break! Teaching these classes takes a special kind of dedication.

Thanks, I'm still quite stunned.

It's all just so interesting to me. For anyone who has endured my DD's school threads, she has had some tough times being a "medium" student. She goes to all her classes, does all her work, studies, yet still doesn't pull the grades I think she should for the effort. Then when she does work hard and it doesn't seem to pay off in test scores, she gets really apathetic, depressed, and acts like she doesn't really care about school. I guess this is just some defense mechanism because you should have seen her when she saw that she got a 4. She was just speechless almost and absolutely shocked. I could tell that she was SOOO pleased with herself. Honestly, it did my heart good to see that she really wants those grades. On the other hand, it saddens me that whatever struggles she has with learning, they really deflate her self-esteem.
