Question about ADRs. Changing the party size?

OK, here's my dilemma:
I'm trying to book an ADR at a restaurant for just me and my wife. When I search for reservations, there are none available for 2 people for the time we want.

When I increase the party size to 4 people, several different times show up, one being the exact time we want.
So my question is, can I book this ADR for 4 people and then change it to 2 people at a later date and will it still let me keep the ADR?

I would book the set of 4 and keep an eye out for two, but my understanding is you wouldn't be penalized for showing up with less than four people.

Is there a level where they will penalize you? I have an ADR @ the Flying Fish for 6 with the possibility that 4 may not make it (Its for January so there is time :-)). Is this a scenario where I should call to adjust the # of guests?

Thanks in advance for the help with this.

As long as at least one person shows up for the reservation you will not be charged for the missing diners.

for dkrauss: I've never heard of any penalty for what you mentioned, but most likely it would be for a much larger group. You can check online to see if there is a reservation available for your group size once you know for sure how many will be there. Or call to see IF you can reduce the number of guests without having to cancel your current reservation. It would free up space for another group.

Has anyone had any experience with adding 1 more person to an existing reservation? I tried to get one for 3, but had to make one for party of 2 and a second for party of 1, both at the exact same time.

Last time I went with 3 people (one being a baby) I didn't think I had to count the baby so I made all my reservations for 2. Then I got told by my travel agent that the baby counted so I had to go back and cancel and make all new reservations just to add on a baby who wouldn't possibly be eating anything. I think if you call Disney directly they could probably me more accommodating.

I would keep trying for a party of 3. If not, when you get there tell the CM at the front desk that you have 2 reservations for same time and they'll likely just sit you all together.
