Question About Accessible Room Locations

Hi! I'm looking for information about location of handicapped rooms at resorts. My Dad is a stroke survivor. He can walk (he still works), but he is slow. We are having our wedding at WDW in Jan (19th) and we're wanting my folks to stay at the GF for convenience (wedding at WP and reception at GF). I know the standard rooms aren't in the main lobby, but does anyone know the distance to get to the lobby and/or monorail? Is it difficult for someone that can't walk well?

My Mom is also considering the Contemporary, because a tower room is about the same cost as a standard GF room, and she thinks there will be less walking. I'm skeptical, thinking that walking from the room at the CR to the monorail and from the monorail to the lobby at GF is the same as walking from the GF standard room to GF lobby. Any thoughts?

Hi! Congrats on your wedding (read your Escape Wedding TR - beautiful!)!

My suggestion would be to contact Special Needs/Requests and they will probably block a room close to the main building at GF for your parents. They have maps of room locations and, if necessary, can/will even call the resort to be sure of the location. They have been wonderfully helpful to us several times. 407-939-7807. Helen and Hollis are especially helpful.

p/s It can be a hike to the GF lobby from some of the rooms and to the monorail. We've styaed at both GF and CR - Tower rooms are easy to take an elevator to the monorial, but it is one elavator to the 4th floor, then another elevator (around the corner) to the monorail platform. The monorail at GF is off the lobby and there is elevators to the lower level. Nothing is terribly far. Special Needs would be your best bet for good info and room location. Also, if your parents require a HC room, these are located throughout the resorts, not necessarily close to a lobby. If you have a room reservation, call Special Needs directly, if not, explain to the CM booking that your father has a medical issue and you need to speak with special needs about a room location - some do not understand, but insist, if it comes to that. I am sure it will work out well.

Thank you so much! That is really helpful. I actually called and spoke with Harold, and he was really kind. I think it might come down to Mom and Dad just wanting to stay at the CR, because they've always wanted to stay there!

I just don't want them to be disjointed from the activities, but I think with the monorail, it won't be too bad.

You may be most interested in Post #2 which discusses wheelchairs and other mobility devices, especially about renting or borrowing them.

The corridors in the Contemporary Tower are very short as the elevators are in the middle. And when you get off the elevators on the 4th floor you are right near both an escalator and elevator to the monorail platform. And the monorail station at the GF is about 15m from the main building and comes directly into the 2nd level. If you stay in the Contemporary Wing it is wuite a way to the main building.

And there are two types of accessible rooms. Both have higher toilets (43cm instead of 33cm) with grab bars. The fully accessbille rooms have a roll-in shower with a seat while the partially accessible rooms have a combined tub/shower where a person has to step over the tub edge; there are grab bars both outside and inside the tub for assistance.

All room doors are wide enough for a wheelchair or ECV with no problems. The accessible rooms are scattered around each resort.
