Question about a "PIN TRADING" pin

We just bought a grab bag. One of the pins included is a pin that says "PIN TRADING" on the front. It has an old-style Minnie Mouse pushing a pin trading card.

On the back, it says, "Disney Auctins Exclusive" and "Limited Edition 250."

We bought the grab bag purely as an inexpensive way to give the kids (and the wife!) pins to trade while at the World next month. But this "Limited Edition 250" has me wondering ... any reason I should hold onto it???

I personally wouldn't be able to part with anything that had such a small release. But that's just me!!

It shows that twice as many people are wanting the pin as are willing to trade it away, which increases the perceived value.

If trading with a "professional" trader (as opposed to a CM lanyard) you should be able to get a very good pin in exchange.

I guess the bottom line is that someone somewhere at WDW will get lucky next month. I completely understand the nature of collectors and the items they collect, that certain items have special and/or intrinsic value.

But my kids and my wife aren't pin collectors, or more precisely, they are not pin hobbyists. We got the kids started as we saw it as a way to get them to socially interact with others (mostly CMs) in a safe and fun way, and to give them the joy of collecting pins that have some personal meaning to them (a favorite ride, park, character, etc.); my wife caught the bug along the way. Therefore, the only "value" any pins have for them is if the subject of the pin tickles them in some way. The rarity of a pin or even the monetary value of a pin is meaningless. I buy grab bags for them before each trip so that they have the means to trade for pins that they see and love.

The limited edition pin I described above is of no interest to them, and thus it's something that will be traded just like any other pin.

I inserted myself into the situation by wondering if there was any "other" value of the pin, such as if it had substantial monetary value that could be realized, that could then be used to buy them more pins.

So unless we happen upon a pin trading hobbyist while in The World next month (who would perhaps trade several pins for this one pin), some collector will get very lucky by seeing this pin on a CM's lanyard and will jump at making a trade. :goodvibes

Depending on what you want from some of the non-CM traders at DTD, I'm sure you could easily get a few nice pins for that one pin. If I were you, I'd hold it and not just dump it on a CM lanyard. But, the main idea is to have fun, so since this pin has no value to you, please take all the statements with a ton of salt and do what makes you feel good.

CleveRocks,
Speaking as an experienced pin trader who has been collecting/trading pins since 2001, I would trade this pin to a Cast Member wearing a lanyard. With every hobby there are some who like to spoil it for others and in the pin trading world those people are called sharks, who like to take advantage of those who are new to pin trading and can basically get the better end of a trade since they would know more then someone who is just starting out. Obviously there are also some wonderfull experienced pin traders like myself and others who would always try to help new pin traders, however I would still save yourself the time and trade the pin to a Cast Member.
