Queen Elizabeth funeral and looking forward

Both Harry and Andrew are allowed to wear their uniform for the next vigil.

There will be 2, one for the children of the Queen and on for the grand children.
Not a great decision. Charles is already showing weakness. IMO Andrew retired from the Navy. Harry quit and both were stripped of their honorary titles...neither are working Royals.

I think the most important signal will be WHICH uniform they turn up in. Andrew famously wanted to wear his honorary admiral's uniform to the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh, and got a flat no.

I suspect that the uniforms they will be wearing will be the far more modest ones that they actually wore on duty right before retirement. For Andrew, that would be the dress uniform of a Royal Navy Commander, and for Harry, the uniform of a Pilot Caption in the Army Air Corps. If so, it may be that Charles didn't actually make the decision. As retirees honourably discharged, they may have been given special permission directly by those services to wear them for this one occasion, if it was applied for as part of the Queen's funeral plan request. It's definitely not the norm in the UK services, but if the Queen personally requested permission to let her retired son and grandson wear their service uniforms to her funeral, I think that the Army & Navy might have been willing to grant an exception. This is what those service uniforms look like.

The original plan (supposedly the Queen's wishes) was yes for Andrew but no for Harry because he quit...as opposed to retiring. This is how it stood until today.

What does being a working Royal have to do with being able to wear your military uniform?
I'm not really sure how it works over there, but isn't the Queen the "head" of the military, why wouldn't anyone who has served be able to wear their uniform to her funeral?

It's one of the protocols set by Buckingham Palace. It's why Charles, Anne and Edward were in uniform for The Queen's Prayer Service and Andrew was not. He would only be allowed to wear it at the final vigil.

Oh Ok didn't know that. I do think it's important for protocols to be followed but at the same time it wouldn't be so bad if some of these things, like not being able to wear your military uniform even if you served, or not being able holding your wife's hand for support during a loved one's funeral, were changed with the new King.

There have been multiple concessions requested in the last week. Where does it stop?

I don't know, I guess it depends on what is being asked for. Is holding hands with your spouse in public really a HUGE deal? Is wearing a uniform that you wore while serving your country when you attend the funeral of the head (figure) of the country a big deal? This isn't the 1500's anymore it's OK for some things to change.

ETA @TLSnell1981 Why PM and then turn off the option for me to reply?
You ask me a question here, I answer and you then reply in my PM's to have the last word. Kind of a **** move on your part.

Maybe someone here besides me would like to learn a little about Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex? He's been relatively anonymous all these years, compared to his siblings and I found this article very pleasant and informative. I love that he has specifically focused on taking over Prince Philip's former duties.

P.S. @CdnCarrie, if you read through carefully, there's a special little something in there for you! :goodvibes

Well we do have 100,000 lakes!

I do recall Edward being here for the Duke of Edinburgh awards.

Does the USA have Duke of E program? Anyone know?

The website says that the program operates in the US, and has a US address in Chicago, but I've never seen any local promotions for it or news stories about it anywhere that I've lived in the US. (That's clear as mud, right?)

Boy Scouts USA is listed as a sponsor, so it wouldn't surprise me if it was primarily a scouting thing here.

No different than a G7 conference.
It's a lot more leaders than a G7 conference though. Many more countries and the inclusion of Royal families.

In the UK, those who have retired from the military generally do not wear there uniforms (unlike, say, the US). The Royal family where theirs based on their honorary membership, which Andrew and Harry no longer have. At least, that is my simplistic understanding.

I think the problem started that Andrew got a yes (maybe still from his mother) and Harry a no. That cannot be explained to the public, both a yes can be explained, both a no can be explained, but one yes the other no. That is a hard sell.

Even Piers Morgan wrote a column about, with the headline: Harry is selfish brat, but if Andrew gets to wear his uniform, then so should Harry.

This decision has its benefits, 1. Honouring your dead mother/queen/head of the military's last wish, 2. Possibly further restoring the bond between Harry and Charles. With that book still planned, the more Charles appears the bigger person, the better it is.

We are just talking a 15 minute vigil here, not the funeral itself.

What I think is remarkable (and, when you stop to really think about it, gives one hope for the good in the world) is the thousands and thousands of people in London who are literally walking miles and waiting their turns patiently for hours and hours in order to just have a MOMENT to walk past Queen Elizabeth's coffin so they can pay their last respects to the queen.

If you just look at the video footage online of the miles and miles of people...right there is, in a physical way, is the impact that Queen Elizabeth made on her country and the world.

50 years from now, NOBODY is going to care who did or did not hold hands. Or who did or did not get to wear their old military uniforms.

The slightly strange thing is, that to this month, the DofE certificates issued still bear the signature of Prince Philip.
