Queen Elizabeth funeral and looking forward

True. I feel like there is a lot of vagueness about the time of death that plays into it as well. We know she passed no later than the announcement from BP, but other than that it could have been much earlier. The only one who we know for sure arrived too late, after the public announcement, was Harry. Without a time of death, anything else is speculation. Whether we ever find out those details isn’t all that important really.

I hope that if they wanted to be there when she passed, that they were able to make it in time. Some people want to be there and some don’t. I wanted to remember the last time with my parents while they were alive, and I told my sister ahead of time that I did not want to be present when they passed. She wanted to be there, and was. It’s a very personal decision, and I am glad that I didn’t have to make it with the entire world looking over my shoulder.
BBC just explicitly said that only Charles and Anne (of her children) were with her when she died.

Andrew is taking the dogs, he had given her one or two(?) As the one had died recently.

And I think replacing portraits will happen quicker than you think. Here in the Netherlands I think it was within weeks. But then again, we had an abdication and we could prepare.

I suspect that things are prepared in the UK too (maybe not so much in Commonwealth countries). At least in government/public buildings. Though portraits would probably have to have been updated somewhat regularly (not necessarily printed, but retaken) as they wouldn’t want to use a portrait from a number of years ago.

I would think that the various official pictures & portraits of the Queen would remain in place until she is laid to rest. They would probably be draped with black bunting or something similar.

To prepare for the death of the Queen, Charles probably already had official pictures taken. Those pictures would have been printed, framed, and packaged, prior to the Queen's passing. All that would be needed now is to ship the pictures to the various points around the world.

They've had years, even decades, to have everything ready and put into place.

Agreed, though some things (like portraits) would have had be updated and/or wait until the last minute.
The Queen's flag, which had been flying at half staff over Buckingham Palace since her death has been lowered, and King Charles flag is now flying at full staff over the palace.

This was done when King Charles & Camilla came outside, in front of Buckingham Palace and greeted and shook hands with well wishers and mourners for a good 15 minutes.

A spontaneous, "God Save the King," broke out among the crowd for him, for the first time.

The King has entered the building. (No, I'm not talking about Elvis. ;) )
There is no “Queen’s flag” and “King’s flag”. It is the Royal Standard and flies whenever the Monarch (King or Queen) is in residence. They did remove the Union Jack (which had been flying at half staff) and replaced it with the Royal Standard (at full staff), but it is the same flag (I mean, I suppose that they may have a new one and it may not be literally the same flag), but it is the same design as before.

I noticed that King Charles is very much a smartphone king.

Every so often as he proceeded along shaking hands, accepting condolences and chatting with people, he'd straighten and look toward those behind who were holding up phones hoping to get a video of him. That level of awareness and graciousness was lovely to see.

I did think Queen Consort Camilla seemed a bit tentative. Perhaps she was endeavoring not to upstage him. She must be wondering how she'll be received by the public. I do hope it will be kindly.

The portrait up in my kid's old school (not sure about the high school..) is pretty old. Like I would say 1970s.

Well that changed quickly - our provincial court system.

Court of King's Bench

The Court of King’s Bench of Manitoba is the highest trial court for the province. It is a court of general and inherent jurisdiction, meaning the judges of the court hear cases of all kinds and possess powers that go beyond what is conferred on them by statute. The judges are federally appointed pursuant to the Judges Act.

I'd not thought of that but I heard it also on the radio this morning. Everybody and everything in our entire system that once represented the Queen now represent the King. I wonder if the Ontario Leg will now be held at "King's Park"?

She'll find her way, just like Prince Philip did. And it may actually be easier for her if she is not driven to have influence and a meaning role in her own right, the way he apparently was.

I had the BBC on for most of the afternoon, and at a certain point the reporter in the studio said that he couldn't see Camilla anywhere. She made an effort to stay behind / out of sight.

Oh, I don't doubt but that she will. She's an extremely capable woman from what I've observed and read of her, actually more adept at meeting and greeting people than Charles despite all his experience.

I think it may have been easier for Philip, though. He was royal by birth. Although, he was said to have had difficulty adjusting to second fiddle.

Yes, one of the American commentators remarked that she appeared to be holding back slightly as they walked along viewing the memorial flowers.

She's fortunately had a few years of marriage to Charles to become accustomed to the-done-thing.

I hope the adjustment to their new roles will be easier than both of them may have feared, given the ugly things said of them in the past. Time to lay the past to rest and give them both a chance to succeed.

King Charles has just announced that he has made William and Catherine the Prince and Princess of Wales
On some other sites, people were arguing that W&K automatically became P&P of Wales. No, Charles has to bestow that honor.

I expected him to wait until after the Queen’s funeral.

I’m saddened to hear about The Queen’s passing.

I found it fascinating that the old NHL Winnipeg Jets arena had a huge portrait of Elizabeth hanging inside. I’m guessing it was installed when Winnipeg hosted the 1967 Pan-American games.

I don’t know what happened to it after the arena was knocked down.

Nice to see it mentioned here, as it was quite a feature of the old barn.

It’s current location has been unknown since it was purchased by a private citizen. *apparently it was cut in two and put into storage in 2002.

There are now plans to display it publicly in the weeks ahead.

I was thinking about the uniforms that the Yeoman Warders wear at the Tower of London. They have a very distinctive ER II

I think he wants them to be able to go out and also shake hands & greet people, with their new titles and status in place. As a PP stated, King Charles is quite aware of the power and instantaneousness of social media and keeping up with that. I think more things will move much more quickly than before. :teleport:

During his first speech, several minutes ago, he talked about the conditions and times of when Elizabeth became queen and how she modernized things. I think he was also alluding to how he, too, will continue to modernize even further - at social media speeds in some cases.

Nice speech. 👑🇬🇧
I agree, although his tie looked so very tight I was concerned for his comfort. Perhaps it was the camera angle that made it appear that way. I thought it was a nice blend of tribute and plans for the future, and entirely appropriate for the first public speech as the monarch. I can’t imagine having to maintain my composure like that so soon after the death of my mother.

The speech was lovely. Delighted that Catherine will be Princess of Wales. I also liked how Camilla emerged from the car in London and immediately bucked up to go greet the crowds. It never seems to come naturally to her, but her courage on display is touching. Long live the King.

Interesting that when Charles referred to Harry and Meghan, he didn't use the titles Prince and Princess. I wonder if he's stripping them of everything?
