ok i have had the week from hell. my son is stillsick! i'm about ready to jump off the bridge.
so my qotd is.....

when do you keep them home from school? how do you make that decision?

Fever and/or vomiting are automatic stay at home days. Most other minor complaints don't result in staying home, but if the school nurse calls, I will go get them right away. I'm a SAHM and if I go out, I have my cell on so the school can reach me.

That's a hard question. I had to deal with that this week and I always second guess myself. What I did this week is let them both miss one day, the first day of the cold when they felt the worst, but then gave them something for the symptoms the next day and made them go back. The amount of work they miss in one day is crazy.:sad2:

As a retired teacher, the rules at my school were, vomiting, fever over 100.5 or really nasty head cold keep them home.:confused3

I hope you son feels better soon!:wizard:

Vomiting and fever definitely earns DD a day home. If the school nurse calls and says DD isn't feeling well, I immediately leave work to pick her up.

Po3, I hope your son feels better. to you. You definitely need to treat yourself once he is better. Scrapbooking supplies should help.:rolleyes1

my man has seasonal asthma, so he had a terrible attack in the middle of the night on wednesday, so i kept him home yesterday, because he was up all night coughing. i've nebbed him, puffed him, everything they have told us to do and nothing was working. so he's still coughing today, but i'm going to send him and i'm feeling like i'm not going to win the "mother of the year" award.:sad2:
so just wondering what everyone else does.

thanks guys!

Don't be hard on yourself, Po3, sounds like you are doing everything you can to treat your son's chronic asthma. It certainly isn't an easy illness.

Ok, my kids are sick today..but it's fall break so they are not missing any school...

My thought is.. if it's just sniffle or small cough, go to school...
Vomiting, and fever..are a big NO school day.. Now, our school also has a policy that they have to be fever free for 24 hours...but I send them as long as they are fever free..I don't like for them to miss any more school than they have..

PO3, you are doing the right thing by your little one...mine are older so the work load for missing several days is awful.. especially with my 6th & 8th graders who are in advanced classes and my 8th grader, I have to contact 7 teachers to get homework assignments...

You are doing the right thing by keeping him home.. that asthma stuff is hard on them... and only mommies (daddies) know how to make our babies feel better.... We haven't had to break out our neb. in 2 years....but I will NOT give that away or sell it... The doctor told us if we didn't buy it we would regret it... We bought it and used it for 5 years every fall especially.. for 2 years DS hasn't needed it unless he gets his bad, bad, colds and his respiratory infections....I just know if I get rid of it....wham.. he'll need it...
Hope your little one feels better soon... poor little guy!!!

Our rule is if your too sick to go to school, than your too sick to go out to play and play video games. PJ's and resting in bed. Given that, there are very few days my kids ask to stay home. So when they do, I know they really dont feel well. Plus my oldest once faked being sick and I found out so I home schooled him for they day and he said it was way to much work with me, he would rather of stayed in school. That was 4 yrs ago and he has never done it again.
If they have a fever, throwing up, diarrhea than that is a difinate stay home. Sniffling, coughing(within reason) are send to school. My oldest has seasonal allergies and from end of Sept. to mid November its like he always has a cold but is allergies. I still medicate him and send him.

I agree fever and vomiting. With DD, she is rarely tells me when she doesn't feel good, so when she does I listen and that usually means staying home and going to the doctor. When she was in Kindergarten she was out of school for 7 days with fever and strep and ended up in the hospital (all was well, just precautionary) but since then she REALLY doesn't tell us when she is sick. So I really have to keep an eye on her, I think at times I annoy her with ARE YOU SURE YOU DONT FEEL BAD???? "YES MOM!!!" :lmao: Po3, Mommy knows best and you know your son better than anyone so go with your Mommy Gut!

I so agree about the Mommy Gut Feeling. Sometimes you just know. I too have sent with the little voice saying "is this the right thing?" But if he was up all night coughing due to asthma, it was stay home till I could get it under control.

We even had a teacher riducule my DS in 2nd grade for his coughing due to an asthma attack that started in school. That dingbat let him cough and cough and made him feel terrible about it, and said the kids around him must hate sitting there... He came home in tears, and DH was at the principal's office first thing in the morning. All he needed was a trip to the nurse for his inhaler, but he was afraid to ask her...

Anyway, trust your feelings

It's been so long that I don't remember but I'm sorry ds is still sick. I do agree with all of the above, especially about the Mommy Gut.

I am so sorry to hear about your little guy. I hope he feels better soon.

My littlest is upstairs coughing right now. It started yesterday. He went to school today because of the Halloween party. But he has two days to rest up now. He's had about four weeks of clear nose and now it's runny again. Have to keep on top of it, or it'll turn into another sinus infection.

We keep them home for the major stuff and if there is a fever after Tylenol. School wants them fever free for 24 hours, but that's hasn't been an issue for us yet.
