"Cunard Line and Athens 2004, the organizing committee for the 2004 Olympic Games, today signed a memorandum of understanding to position Cunard's $800-million Queen Mary 2 in the Greek port of Piraeus to serve as a floating hotel during the Games."

I'm glad it isn't the Wonder or Magic! :jester:

There are actually 12 or more ships that will be anchored for use as hotel rooms. Glad the Olympics are in August because my mom and I are sailing the QM2 on one of her inagural voyages from New York to London in April 2004:bounce:

llachance - Yes, I know. I just thought it was a bit special that the new QM2 is one of them. It was an article on Maritime Today. The QM2 is quite a ship. As a TA I received all the promo brochures for it. That will be a great cruise for you . . . maybe a bit cool crossing the Atlantic? :jester:

We chose this trip, in particular, because it is a tandem sailing with the QE2. My daugher, ex husband and I sailed the QE2 to London 12 years ago.....thought this would be a great way to honor her retirement. Of course I am taking my daughter on our 3rd Disney cruise in December 2003.

My husband sailed transatlantic on the QE2 MANY years ago when he was an Air Force fighter pilot. He had bought a new Porsche (the "fighter jock" thing to do I guess!) straight from the factory in Germany, and had to get it back to the states. So both he and the car went on the QE2. I believe it was March or April, but he said it was very COLD in the middle of the Atlantic. He hated cruising - couldn't stand the confinement of a ship and the little cabin (not going in a suite of course). It's mainly because of this that I can't get him on a Disney cruise now, or ANY cruise. So I cruise without him. I keep telling him the newer ships are much better. He did seem somewhat impressed when I showed him all the QM2 stuff. Maybe someday . . .

i crossed the atlantic in january 1963 on the original queen mary.....
i remember the wonderful blast of cold air as i walked the deck (of course i was 7 years old at the time and also loved spending long periods of time outside in the the snowy cold of scandinavia, so it's hard to judge)......
as for small rooms.....nope.....at least not in first class on the QM.....my sister and i had a stateroom that was big enough to fit my entire upstairs....
the ship was gorgeous and i can't wait to sail on the QM2.....though our voyage will have to wait until 2005....
i should add that i was every bit as awed by the Wonder as i was by the QM way back when......our suite on the Wonder was stunning.....i could have spent the entire cruise happily in the room....

as for using the ship as a hotel during the olympics.....they'll have to be very vigilant about terrorism......it is greece after all......i assume they'll have scuba divers they way DCL does.....they'd better....
