Shortly after a friend recommending “The Marvelous” I got a month of Amazon Prime for free. I’ve been watching Season 1 and enjoying, but there’s no way I’ll get through five seasons and I don’t plan to pay for continuing Amazon Prime.

I was thinking of watching Seasons 1 and 5 and then I thought maybe I could also watch 2, 3 OR 4. If you’ve watched all five seasons which middle season do you think would be best, either for filling in storylines or just because it’s good?.

Thanks :happytv:

Sorry, but you are going to have to watch all five seasons 😂

Actually one season does drag a little at first but I can't remember which one (maybe season 4) but to really understand Midge, her motivations, her reactions etc, you really have to live through all the season with her. And you won't appreciate the finale as much without understanding how Midge and Suzie's relationship evolved.

Can you fid it at the library?

I think season 4 as the story sets up season 5 quite a bit from multiple fronts.

Update - season 2 & 3 sets up Madge's family dynamic and even Susie's. With the question at hand if you only have the time for the 1 more and not all then season 4; although they binge watch well so you might want to try.

I love love love this show and I really want to rewatch it soon.

When is your free month up?
I don’t know - can you pay for Prime month to month? If you can, I’d pay for another month and watch all the seasons - each season does flow into the next one.

This show definitely builds on the past. I think 1, 2, & 5 were great, 3 & 4 good. BUT, I agree you need to have watched 3 & 4 before 5.

I'm not sure why you'd want to watch select series. Go in order, as you can, and/or check the DVDs out of the library.

We just watched as we got a free month here or there... took us longer that way, but well worth watching the whole series!

Interesting and helpful. Thank you all. Consensus seems to be I've got to watch all five seasons. I'm up to Episode 8 of Season 1.

Random musings . . .

One of my all time favorite shows was "Gilmore Girls" (also by Amy Palladino). I would watch the clock the entire hour thinking only 42 more minutes of the show, only 29 more minutes, only 8 more minutes. Episodes were always too short.

I have a flashback every time there is a scene at the Stage Deli. I had lunch there once before a Broadway show, sat at the counter/bar and Geraldo Rivera came and sat a few stools away. I played it very cool, and felt very superior to all the "tourists" who went up to him. :confused3 (Yes, I was a tourist, too, but a cool tourist!)

From time to time someone will post the question on the boards, how do you afford your trips to Disney? A lot of people seem to be like me, frugal except when it comes time to plan a Disney trip. Of course I can afford to pay for Amazon Prime for another month, but that's a few dollars I won't have for my next trip. :tilt:

We know lots of celebs like DL and WDW, and no doubt many are frequent Dis readers and posters. :thumbsup2 I'm wondering which cast member read my post and thought, "for gosh sakes, I'll pay the Amazon fee for another month so you can finish the series." :rotfl2:

 It didn't occur to me that I might be able to get them from the library.

And last, but not least, intrigued about episodes taking place in the Catskills. (I live about an hour north.) No doubt "borscht belt" related not camping and hiking.

Up to Season 2, Episode 4. I made it to the Catskills!

Rachel and Marin (yes, I'm on a first name basis with them :rotfl2:) must have eaten nothing but carrots and celery for the five years it was filming!

The costumes are amazing. I wonder where they are now.

And the sets, too. When they show factory scenes I'm impressed with the detail.

I think it's possible to binge it all in the short period you've got...and it's worth it, IMO.

I love this show so much. I think I actually grieved a little when I got to the end. I was thrilled when DD17 wanted to watch and I got to revisit everything Midge and Susie. At the very least, it was worth it to get a second look at some of Midge's epic outfits. Season 4 was the weakest for me, but you really can't skip any of it to get a firm grasp of everything going on. I'd personally be lost with the story and how the characters got to where they are by skipping the middle seasons. Alex Borstein's portrayal of Susie is worth it alone to see it through. I'm also particularly fond of the Shirley character.

It may also help that it reminds me of family and some of my upbringing. While it was after the Borscht Belt heyday, I was brought up to the Catskills to resorts like the one depicted when I was a kid. There's an episode entitled "Midnight at the Concord," which depicts a real resort that used to be up there. I never got to go there (although my parents had the towels from there and Grossingers, among others, to show they'd been). Not mentioned in the show, but we were more of a Nevele family and I went several times as a kid. They'd even let us into the earlier comedy shows, before the dirty jokes started flying.

I know some people disliked the ending, but it really resonated with me...to the point that I was in tears when the significance all clicked. I think seeing it all come full circle helped make it a more powerful viewing experience. It also helped with some of the little scenic pics in the final ending credits.

Sorry I’m coming late to this but please, don’t do that. It won’t work and you’ll have robbed yourself of the side-splitting hilarity of summer at the Steiner Resort and the gut-wrenching heartbreak of the entire Shy Baldwin debacle. Trust me. This is truly a once-in-a-generation great show.

I’m up to Season 3, and the good news is I think my Amazon Prime is good until 7/27 so I think I’ll make it. I agree with everyone who has said it’s too good to skip some episodes.

I’m curious to see both Rachel B and Alex B in something different to see them play a completely different character.

You have me curious about the ending. I hate to read a book and then be disappointed - or mad - about the ending.

Okay, now you have me curious about Shy, too.

It’s all a very “quiet” connection… almost too basic, yet it’s unspoken. So, no major wow or a-ha moment…but kind of a peace. Obviously, it’s subjective and might not hit you the same way.
