Look at the program called Handbrake. I have used it hundreds of times for the same purpose.

I bought software at Best Buy called 123 DVD Gold. It works for most dvd's. It didn't work for my own copy of Twilight, or a rented copy of The Other Guys. But, it has worked for everyother movie I have tried to burn. It does work for rented dvd's also. I haven't updated it lately, so I can't say if those two movies would burn now. It cost about $50.00. It will either copy dvd's or burn them. It even will put them straight onto iTunes. It has been a great program. My kids have dozens of movies and tv shows on their iPods now.:happytv:

We use Magic DVD Ripper, free trial download from the internet. You can use it 5 times for the free trial and each time you use it, as long as you don't close the program out, you can copy DVD after DVD. It has a check box for iPod format as well as other players (We use it for our Mix Max) :thumbsup2

Handbrake is it. And they just updated it today.

You put a dvd into your computer. Choose Iphone/Ipod Touch from the presets menu and you you are one click away from having what you need.

best of all (from budget board perspective)...free

Can you tell me how long it takes? 1/2 hour, 2 hrs, 4hrs per movie? When I purchase from iTunes it's a min of 4hrs so I do it overnight. Thanks.

A lot of it depends on your computer and it's speed. On my 4 year old desktop, a regular movie will take about 60-90 minutes. Then it takes another 45 min or so to get on the ipod.

There is a program that is free right now to go right from DVD to iPod. I don't remember the name, it's all over the usual deal sites nod I'm stuck at the tire store, but it's a one step process, handbrake, you rip then convert.

This is the one:

Way easier than handbrake IMHO. Also, with handbrake, you need a way to get the movie on your computer in the first place (rip) then handbrake will convert it to the format you want (for your Idevice)

So glad someone posted about this!
Do you just search for the Handbreak website and download it? Is it hard to use once you have it on your computer? I am not so tech savvy.

Also...if you want to delete a movies on your computer to make more space will they stay on your itouch?

Thanks for your help!:cool1:

Do the movies convert in one file using Handbrake? I downloaded a free program from the internet (don't remember the name and its on my home computer), but it splits the movies into 4 or so files.

Wow, I didn't know there was anyway to do this. Am I right in assuming I can also load onto my ipad? That would be GREAT if it were true.

Here is the one I was talking about:

6 more days to get it free. Took 2 hours to do Home Alone. It rips/converts for you, then you add the file to Itunes, and sync to your Iphone, ipod, ipad, whatever.

No affiliation, but it I tried it and it worked. Enjoy it. Also, supposedly works on Disney Movies.

Of course, you would only use this on Movies you own, not netflix/borrow/etc. And technically, I think breaking the copy protection on the dvds makes somebody mad. I'm not sure who it makes mad, or how mad it makes them. So do the right thing.

This software also works with blu rays if you have BR rom on your pc.

I think if you don't have room on your computer for them, you will run out of room on your touch. And, usually, if you delete an item from your computer I think it deletes from your ipods/phones/pads

Figure a movie will be about a GB.

So what you're saying is with this software we don't need a "digital copy" of movies we own, we can use this software to put movies we own into a digital format and watch them on the itouch.

I've had plenty of success with Handbrake. You just insert the DVD and it will scan the disc for the movie and then you can verify that's the file you want it to convert. It keeps the file together and then you just add the file to your iTunes library. Everything from a DVD goes into your Movies on iTunes so even if it's a TV show like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse you will find it under Movies not TV shows on your iPod/iPhone/iPad.

Time wise about 60 mins to convert a movie and then however long it takes to sync it. I think a movie becomes about 1GB give or take.

You must be using a different version of Handbrake then I have, it rips it and converts it all at once, no need to do it separate.

The free version seems to be for BluRays. For regular DVDs you have to buy the other version. Am I missing something?

The name of the program that we used is Cucusoft. It was easy to use and took slightly less time that the amount of time the movie takes to play to convert. It wasn't free, but maybe in the $25 range??

We converted ALL of our kids movies in 2009 when we bought a new vehicle without at TV. Instead, we bought each kid the largest memory ipod and loaded movies on those.

I need to convert all the ones that we have bought since then but I haven't yet!:goodvibes

So far I've:

downloaded WinX DVD Giveaway (free for six more days) ripper. It appears to be a free trial good for 5 minutes. I didn't try to download a dvd.

downloaded Handbrake. I had no clue what to do next. It's not apparent to the tech challenged. It would scan for my DVD then any button I pushed after that didn't work.

downloaded Magic DVD Ripper (5 use trial). It is downloading a DVD right now. I understood what it wanted from me, lol.

Hopefully this is the answer for me and I'll just have to remove the other downloads. I guess I needed elementary instructions

Can you let me know how it goes? I'd love to be able to do this, we have a lot of movies that DD14 & DBF would love to have on their touches but we don't have digital copies......
