Okay, so first off, I want to say a couple of things.

1. This is my first trip report! I don't have time to do it, but it's only fair to write one, since I've enjoyed reading so many other folks'.

2. Even though it alternately rained, blew and froze over us for several of our 8 days, we still had a great time. If I start whining too much about the weather, someone remind me of that!

Okay - that out of the way, let me introduce the cast:

Me: Kristina - DIS-obsesser extraordinaire, the main photographer, and the one bearing most of our unusually-heavy supplies required for inclement weather most of the time this trip.

DH: John - DH and Daddy, lover of most things Disney, lonely thrill-ride adventurer.

dFIL: Also John, but herein referred to as either Grandpa or dFIL for clarity's sake! Bravely adventuring along with us almost every step of the way at 74 years, getting through his first trip ever to Disney without dMIL, who passed away in July.

DD#1: Caroline - ten years. Generally to be found clutching tissues and pulling back saying, "I'm not going on that."

DD#2: Meredith - 7 years. Crushed DH with unexpected terror of many rides after adventurous promises on her part, but also made everyone smile and laugh most of the trip with full-throttle enthusiasm 97% of the time.

The adventure? Eight days in Disney on the 4/3 deal, staying at POP Century with hopper passes. We were on the regular dining plan. This was the first trip for everyone but Grandpa in over 4 years - we were primed and ready. We arrived on January 29th and left on February 5th.

It's going to take me a while....be patient, please!

:cool1:  I get to be the first one!!!! :cool1:

We left the day before y'all arrived and stayed at the Pop. We just missed you guys. Great start! Can't wait to read about your trip!! popcorn::

Some of you may have heard the beginning of this story, how a planned trip to Florida expanded to include the Disney trip with the 4/3 deal, but how we kept it a surprise till Christmas morning.

The kids found out in a treasure hunt that led them to an armoire full of Disney souvenirs and a big sign saying they were going...

IMG_6742.jpg

They were appropriately excited...

And then....we had about a month to wait.

Finally, on January 29th, after having been in beautiful Florida for only about 36 hours (we arrived in Fort Myers at dFIL's condo and then headed to Orlando a couple of days later from there), we piled into the car (squishing considerably in the back seat - but eight days later on the way home, I realized I'd had all KINDS of space that day that could easily be filled in with new stuffies and helium balloons) and headed out. We left at about 7 a.m., with a very crabby Meredith feeling cross and queasy and refusing to touch her Mcdonald's breakfast, threatening to throw up for the first hour and a half. Since she'd thrown up most of the morning while we were flying to Fort Myers, we were not exactly immune to the fear of motion sickness, and felt somewhat tense. But as the morning wore on, she perked up, thank heavens. (We've come to realize that cars and planes don't bother her at all, and getting up early is no big deal, but mix them both together, and she is NOT a pretty sight.)

So we got to POP around 11:30 and got checked in. They said that our room wasn't ready, but dFIL's was, so we went up to move into his room temporarily, and lo and behold, our room was just being finished when we got up there. We were in the 50's building, behind the jukebox, on the 3rd floor. We hastily tossed things here and there, grabbed our essentials, and hit the road. Sure, the forecast was for rain, but surely not, there was scarcely a cloud in the sky - it was all going to be great. But in the short time we were settling in, the clouds started to roll on in. Onto the MK bus we climbed....

We got to the Magic Kingdom at a little after one in the afternoon. The part was pretty quiet, really. We snagged a quick photo with Pinnochio, and just as we started with him a few drops began to fall, and his handler suggested they move under a little roof in the Town Square. He took Meredith by the hand and they wandered away, with us trailing, laughing at how cute they were together.

There were longer lineups in Fantasyland, so we moved on through to Frontierland and Adventureland. Haunted Mansion was our first ride - at Meredith's suggestion. It scared the PANTS off of her :scared1: - she was riding with dFIL and Caroline, with DH and I in the car behind, and all we could hear all through the ride was her sobbing...off to a great start, I thought. Meredith had been absolutely convinced that she was going to be a crazy person for all the rides, fearless and daring. The first ride undid her - but I'll say this - she consistently managed to bounce back, thank heavens!

After Haunted Mansion, John, Grandpa and Meredith headed for Splash Mountain. Caroline and I, far too chicken for that sort of thing (we've lived to tell about the ride before, but had no desire to do it again), hung back. Caroline munched on a Mickey bar that Grandpa had bought her, and we waited for them on the bridge. It really started to pour, and although I hung out there as long as I could stand it, I started to worry my camera was going to get ruined, and ducked out of the rain - just as they came down the drop. Sigh....missed the photo. Grandpa had actually decided not to ride at the last minute because he realised he didn't have a poncho yet, so he'd gone off to buy one. I'd managed to get Caroline into her poncho before she was drenched, but I was soaked to the skin - was more wet that John and Meredith were after getting off the ride, and they were pretty soggy, too! Meredith was actually much more wet than I was - soaked to her undies. She'd been pretty scared by the drop and said she wouldn't do it again, but that it was awesome, and she loved the inside.

We watched the parade in the pouring rain. I didn't realize then how abbreviated a version of the parade we were seeing - not till the last day when we saw the whole thing. It was pretty, and I took pictures, but they're a little dismal in the wet. Here's an appropriate pic of Mary Poppins and Bert:

IMG_7069.jpg

After the parade, we went over to Pirates of the Caribbean for two quick rides in succession. We just walked right on both times (just like we'd done at Haunted Mansion). I got myself all worked up, the first time, trying to remember how bad that first drop was, and the girls keyed into that and were a little nervous. When we went through it and dropped, I laughed out loud - it's nothing! How could I remember that as worrisome?? Anyway, I loved the reworking they did of the ride - it's great fun, and we loved seeing Jack here and there in the ride. The kids and I are huge Pirates fans, so it was a big hit.

But after that Meredith was really cold and shivery, and begging to come back to the hotel, so we piled back onto the bus after such a short little stay, and headed back. Caroline had mixed feelings, dFIL clearly thought they were freezing (it wasn't dry, but it also wasn't at all warm) and so we caved. Both John and I were a little sulky about it at first, to be honest, hating to waste almost all of the first day. We'd had scarcely three hours in the park. But both kids fell asleep on the bus, so it was the right thing to do. Oh, and on the way out of the park, I noticed that there was a security guard with an autograph book, getting kids coming in to sign it for him...I loved that. It was the first of many, many touches of CM-created Disney Magic this trip.

We rested a bit at the hotel, hung up our wet clothes and showered to freshen up before heading to 1900 Park Fare at the Grand Floridian.

1900 Park Fare was perfectly nice. They had a nice spread of good food (I kicked myself afterwards, because I forgot to try the strawberry soup, which I'd meant to have, but the cream of asparagus was extremely tasty!). There was a bit too much going on for us to have a solid meal, but I felt full pretty quickly, and everyone else seemed to as well. The characters were lots of fun with the kids. We liked Lady Tremaine the best. When she first walked into our section, she stalked by the table, pointing her finger at the kids' books, and said, "Open them up," quietly and firmly with an arch to her eyebrows, before gliding past them. No real crazy antics, but just good consistent role-playing, and the kids were eating it all up. Cinderella was a little distant, as was the prince, but the stepmother and stepsisters were great fun.

After dinner - the shopping commenced. We started with an innocent lanyard pin and a 2009 fridge magnet. Then Caroline needed a new notebook to journal the trip, because she'd forgotten hers, and Meredith needed a fatter autograph pen....I considered buying a shampoo bar from Basin (I love that store!, but didn't end up getting that for a few more days (got it at Downtown Disney). There was lots more we DIDN'T buy - I'm so glad Disney never minds when we try on the hats and take pictures in them, because we have so much fun with that.

(He's definitely going to cringe when he sees I've put this picture in, lol)
We hopped on the Monorail at GF just to do a loop. It's so pretty at night. We love the monorail. They were just regular that first night - on our last day as we were leaving, though, I saw two of the monorails, Monorail Orange and Monorail Yellow, decorated with the balloon celebration themes.

On the way home after that, I stopped in at POP and bought a couple of refillable mugs and some milk for cereal in the morning. When I got back, at TEN P.M., the girls were getting into their swimsuits to go out to the pool with John. I tsked and fussed, and thought about how they'd been up at 6 that morning, but went along with it for a half hour or so. Thank heavens we did - it was the last chance they had to be in the pool the rest of the trip.

By eleven o'clock, the kids were sound asleep in their beds, and our first day was done.

Great post !! Love the pic of your hubby in the goofy hat! My DH would kill me if I posted a pic like that.... good thing I don't have one like it cus I sooooooooo would post it! :rotfl2:

Can't wait for your next update!

Ya gotta watch the pin collecting thing. It started out as Nova my daughter just wanting a couple of pretty pins. Now her lanyard is full! And she traded with CM's during the trip. It can get expensive!!! Great update!!

Just found your TR and noticed you are from Ontario too!! Looking forward to reading more!

Meredith sounds like my DD(14), she's fine in a car, and while crabby with getting up early, she's ok after a little while. But put the two together and you'll have to stop in about 30 min. :rotfl:

Too bad about the rain. I don't mind being wet if it's hot, but I hate being cold and cold combined with wet is the absolute worst. I get really cranky then.:rotfl2:

I woke up at 8 a.m., hoping for the best, but a little leery.

John and dFIL went to the food court first thing in the morning for a bite to eat (John brought me back my first cup of hot chocolate in the refillable mug, yay!). The girls were awake and looking forward to a looooong day at Hollywood Studios this mroning and then going to Epcot till Illuminations was over. The weather was crap again, though. It was already pouring rain. It was supposed to clear, but stay cold by about 1 p.m. and then be mostly sunny. I was apprehensive, and knew I had to figure out how to dress them, and what to lug around in the backpack (the ongoing problem of the first few days. After that it got simpler, because we didn't pack extra layers, we just wore them all day).

We went to Hollywood Studios, arriving at about 9:30 a.m. It was just a light drizzle at that point, so I felt encouraged, and in fact, that's as bad as it got after the early morning, just a small amount of rain here and there, and it ended early in the day. The crowds were very light that day. The Fastpasses for Toy Story were 12:40 to 1 p.m. but we walked right on. It was really fun. we should have done it again right away. John was the clear winner, scoring 111,000. I had 75,000 - but man, what a goofy, busy ride, and what a great set. It is so cute in there. I just loved it.

IMG_7164.jpg

We were going to see Little Mermaid next, but it was having technical difficulties. We split up, which was marginally disastrous, because I forgot to hand John the phone. John and Meredith went to ride Star Tours (she loved it). Then they had a long wait for us, and while they were waiting, John got Meredith's face painted. She was SO cute.

IMG_7177.jpg

Meanwhile, Caroline, Grandpa and I went to the Magic of Disney Animaton. It really was a cute little movie with Mushu, though perhaps it worked too hard to promote their new movie. Next, Caroline went in to do the animation class. It was SUPER basic, and they drew Winnie the Pooh. She doesn't like Winnie the Pooh. I could feel her disappointment, but she stayed with it, of course. I loved the room, with the backlit desks. Just before the class started, we had a meet with Pluto. She let Mickey and Bolt go by so she wouldn't miss the class.

IMG_7169.jpg

We reunited with John and Meredith, who were wondering where on EARTH we were - the animation class does take a fair while. We ate lunch at the Backlot Express. It was great. It was almost empty and service was really quick, and the food was good. I loved my lunch. I got a wonderful grilled vegetable sandwich, and it was absolutely perfect.

After lunch, we went on the Great Movie Ride. We all loved that - it's a big fan favourite. We didn't have a fire on that ride (we did another time on a different day). Then we went to the Muppet Show, one of dFIL's favourites. Considering my kids barely even know who the Muppets are, I think they liked it well enough. They got a real kick out of finding the key under the mat while we were waiting to get in.

IMG_7178.jpg

We did a wee bit of shopping in the store - that's where Caroline got her cartoon sweater (first cold person purchase this trip, I believe).

I ducked into the Writer's Stop, which was a total zero as a store - I had hoped it would have some nifty Disney stationery, or classy pens or something, but no, nothing like that, it's just a hole in the wall coffee shop. But it had great treats. I used my first snack credit for a toffee crunch (we actually didn't eat it that day, but when we did, it was delicious!).

IMG_7197.jpg

We split up again, John and dFIL going to the Tower of Terror, while Meredith, Caroline and I went to the Voyage of the Little Mermaid, which was back up and running. I was astonished at Caroline's indifference to it. She didn't think it was very interesting, and that the story was too chopped up. This, from the girl who is totally mermaid obsessed, with Ariel her favourite Disney character of all time! Seeing Disney with a ten-year-old definitely wasn't the same. I was right - for her, a lot of the magic has gone. Meredith was still full of wonder. Caroline was more analytical about things. There were very few "little girl" moments with her on this trip, although she enjoyed it very much when she wasn't freezing, soggy or sick (she wasn't sick yet but the clock was ticking....stay tuned).

After the Little Mermaid we went to see Prince Caspian. I will admit that everyone is right, and the attraction itself is NOT an attraction. I felt like a prisoner in that little theatre, watching the promos - I was actually getting angry about it as it dragged on forever with us standing there. But the girls liked the set stuff and the costumes and the diorama afterwards, and we ALL enjoyed meeting Prince Caspian, who was adorable...just dreamy. The private audience was very nice, really, and there hadn't been any wait at all.

IMG_7519.jpg

We met up with John at the corner of Hollywood and Sunset (dFIL had gone back to the hotel to rest a while before dinner) and were just in time to enjoy the Block Party Bash. The sun was out full force again by this time, and it was beautiful out. I LOVED this parade. This was my favourite daytime parade, hands down. It was PROFOUNDLY loud and SUPER busy. Just terrific, so much fun.

IMG_7221-1.jpg

IMG_7249.jpg

We did a bit more shopping (pins! pins! pins! - I think we'd bought about 12 altogether by this point, and I'm not sure if John had yet started his villain collection. I don't think so, I think he started the next day or the day after). Then we took the monorail to the Polynesian, and had a quick wander around because John loves it so much there, and then went to Epcot from there by monorail.

IMG_7270.jpg

I could NOT believe it was already five o'clock when we got there. We didn't get to do anything at Epcot. We walked straight to Chefs de Fance for dinner, stopping only momentarily for a picture in Canada.

IMG_7282.jpg

It was a very long meal, for Disney. we were there from 5:30 to 7:40. The food was quite good, but the table was just ok. They crammed us into a table for four, with Dad on the end, and it was pretty crowded. And they messed up the bill, putting us all together even though he wasn't on the dining plan, and then said that was the best way to do it so we could get the discount on the things we'd bought that weren't covered by the dining plan (dFIL has a Tables of Wonderland card). I could see their point, but it wasn't their call to make, and dFIL was not happy. It all got straightened around, but it took forever, a good half hour after we were done eating.

After dinner, we walked halfway around the World Showcase to watch Illuminations, without really stopping anywhere to look around in the shops. The kids were getting very cold, and were exhausted. I bought a woven blanket at Morocco (second cold person puchase, I believe) and wrapped it around them to keep them warm for the show.

IMG_7294.jpg

The show seemed different than I remembered, with a lot less narration, but it's been 4 years; I may have forgotten. They seemed too tired to enjoy it much, though Meredith definitely thought the fireworks were beautiful.

IMG_7307.jpg

IMG_7310-1.jpg

Epcot was open till eleven that night, but the kids were wiped out, and dFIL was limping (he has a previously fractured ankle that gets sore with too much walking, though he was a real trouper). I was still raring to go, and Epcot's my favourite park, so I hated to leave. We'd stayed at Hollywood Studios much longer than I'd planned - we weren't even planning to see that parade that day (good thing we did, though!). So I was a bit shocked that we hadn't done anything at Epcot but eat and see Illuminations. I kept reminding myself that there was a lot of days left. The next morning we were heading to Animal Kingdom, and I wanted to get a decently early start. So we swarmed out with the crowd, and headed back to the hotel again. The kids fell asleep on the bus of course, but rallied a bit when we got back to the hotel, and watched some tv in bed before falling asleep.

Great update! DHS is not my favorite park at all. We will be planning a 10 night trip for 2011. DHS is only slated for 1 day. :rotfl:

We were there feb 3rd to 10th and it was so cold the first 3 days!

can't wait for more.
