Many thanks to the replies I got to my first set of questions. Now . . . .

I see discussion of "renting and trading" points. I'm trying to understand what that's all about.

It sounds like renting points just means using my points to make a one-time reservation for someone else to use, with that person compensating me in return at an agreed-upon rate. The person need not be a DVC member at all. DVC is not formally involved in this transaction.

Trading points seems a little fuzzier. It sounds like maybe if I have points that are going to expire and can't be banked, I can simply give them to another DVC member for their use, but I cannot receive any money in return. This does involve DVC, since the points actually move from one account to another, so some sort of formal authorization would be involved.

My guess is that I don't quite have this one right, since it seems like it would be a fairly rare occurance.

Any thoughts on this, or explanations?

You seem to have good grasp on it except for oone thing. There is usually some form of compensation in a member and member trade.

If a member is short a few points he/she may rent points from another member. when the transaction and compensation is determined, the member owning the points will call MS and transfer the points to the renting members account. (If they do not want to go thru MS, they can do just like a non-DVC member and have the DVC member with the points make the reservation for them.

Robin is correct about the compensation in actual practice- however, our documents do prohibit any compensation for a transfer of points. I suspect that DVC has that provision to avoid any claims of problems with a "deal"- since no money was supposed to change hands anyway. DVC has no way to check what behind-the-scenes transaction may have taken place, but the fact is that paying for that transfer is technically not allowed.
