What happens if you purchase interest in a resort that's not yet completed? Can you book reservations for after the expected completion date, or would you only be able to use the points at other resorts until where you purchased is open? Has anyone had experienced with this at other DVC resorts?

Once the unit you ahve actually got listed on your deeds is open for bookings is when you can actually start to use your points. But you can book long before that as long as the vacation starts after the untis opening date. The only other way to use earlier is if you have developer points as they are not specific to a resort and can be used whenever, or I think borrowing from the next year is also a possibility.

Are you talking about AKV or are you thinking in terms of resorts that have been announced but not yet built or open like California or Hawaii?

I'm thinking about California. If they start selling in Spring 09, will they have a firm opening date at that point so you can make reservations once your purchase transaction has closed?

Opinion
I don't think that they will be able to have a FIRM opening date due to construction uncertainties.

Fact
September 1, 2007 was supposed to be the opening date for the first phase of AKV, but they were able to work faster, thus other units opened up ahead of that time. Those of us who bought early had to wait for September, but those who bought somewhat later got the units that opened up earlier than the ones in September.

Basically, the only time your unit number will matter is when the DVC resort is about to open, because that dictates when you can begin staying there. It also matters if they have to close a unit down due to unforeseen circumstances. The latter would be unlikely to occur.

They will have to have an opening date when they start selling. In the case of some other resorts, they did start selling before the resort was ready for guests, but there was an opening date when sales started. FYI, in the case of AKV, they allowed current DVC members to get a small jump on purchasing before new members were allowed to buy in at AKV initially. I can't remember if that was the case with SSR too, but I can imagine that being the case with California.

If California follows similar to AKV, they will start sales several months in advance of estimated opening date but then you won't be able to call to make ressies until a few months before but the purchasers of the new resort get a month head start on making ressies. At AKV sales started in Feb 2007 for an estimated Sep opening. No one could call to reserve until May, by which time some small portion was scheduled to open in July. Owners got a one month window reservation advantage over others to reserve those earlier times after opening. Those from other resorts were able to start calling to make ressies at AKV in June.
