Anyone ever wanted a 25 point contract but had to purchase a larger one and just sold off the remaining points? What would be the pros and cons to this?

Not sure what you mean. If you mean buying 200 points and selling 175 of them, you can't do that. Whatever size contract you buy, you keep. Only the developer (DVD) can break up contracts.

If you mean buying more points than you need and renting unneeded points, sure you can do that.

Personally, I'm in the buy less than you think you need and make it work camp, but that doesn't mean my strategy is right for your family.

You can't sell partial points from a contract but you can use them to rent a reservation to someone.

Only Disney can break up a contract.

I'm in the buy more than you need with intent to rent or sell off and keep them all for myself camp.

define "had to":magnify:, is that all you are seeing on resale market currently or had you thought to buy a full contract from DVC? If the latter, you've received that answer above already.

If you're looking at resale, you can find 25 point contracts out there if that's all you want but closing costs are high, considering per point basis.

You could always add on directly thru DVC later if you find you want more points or search for another resale contract.

We accidentally went with this strategy. We bought enough points so that we could rent out a third of them so we could pay our dues. Unfortunately, we love using them too much, and we have yet to rent any out!
:D

IMO there are several moving parts to this question. They include the following issues.

  1. If one really only needs 25 points there are other ways to stretch the points besides buying that few.
  2. If one ends up needing more, the 25 point option becomes even more expensive.
  3. As a general rule it's a poor choice to buy to rent.
  4. For 25 points it's often best to just go retail.
Without knowing more about the situation, it's difficult to offer a specific opinion. If this would be your first purchase, likely the only situations where that makes sense is if one can get enough benefits out of the membership perks to almost throw away the points themselves. Remember that just renting 50 points here or there is not going to be that easy. You'd almost have to buy a lot more to take this approach and while the numbers might look reasonable, the risk is significant.

We had this very elaborate spread sheet, where it all made tons of sense. But our spreadsheet failed to measure how incredibly tempting 150 extra points are. So so so so tempting!!!!!
How interesting. We finally decided to buy this year with plans for a DVC trip every 2-3 years and to rent out the points every 1-2 years to help cover costs. However, when we passed ROFR and started planning our trips in a spreadsheet, it suddenly shows trips every year, with no points left for renting!

Glad to hear it's not just us!

After we bought in 2000, the disease we caught was called 'addonitis'. Every new resort generated a desire for more points!

Ahhh, addonitis!!! What a lovely thing!

Not even two years since we purchased our first contract, and we already bought two more via resale...

Still my point counters on my DVC login page say 2015 points: 0. 2016 points: 0.

Sigh....

And if it showed 2017 those would be gone too. (For me at least)

You think you'll use x points but then you may you should spoil yourself, invite friends or family... And you end up using ALL your points and then some!

We bought 200 points in 2001 and survived nicely off those points for a few years, then in 2004 decided to share our Disney love with DH's extended family. We banked, borrowed and used the use year points and were short, so we bought a 25 point contract from Disney. After using 3 years points for that trip, we felt so points poor, so we added 75 more points to have a total of 300. Most years it's enough - some years - not so much. So the moral of that story is - don't think you'll have extras for renting - it just doesn't work that way!
