Purchased Magic Bands as room keys?

If I purchase a magicband (and have it activated) I can use that as my room key too, right?

[long version] We've got a trip coming up and my sister wants to purchase a magic band she saw from the Disney Store online and use that. I know that that she can link it to her account and use it in the parks but will it work as the resort key too or do I still have to order one for her before the trip? Do we have to activate it before using it as the key?

I also just purchased a magic band, the Cinderellas Castle one! I am assuming that if it is linked and activated, then it will work as your other magic band would. But I have never done this before so I am curious to know as well.

Theoretically they should work as a room key. I bought two before our trip to AKL last month and linked them to my MDE account. I also took two bands from previous trips. When we got to the room, neither of the new ones nor one of the old ones would open the door. One of the old ones would. DH took the 3 that would'nt open the door down to the front desk and they did something and they all worked for the remainder of the trip.

I'm in the same boat as you guys and I found out from a CM that as long as the purchased MBs are linked to your MDE acct & active, you'll be able to use them accordingly including as a room key. I purchased 6 limited edition MBs for myself and my girl, linked them all to my MDE acct but left two active, one MB for each of us & declined the MBs Disney was giving us for our trip next month. Just make sure that the one you're wearing is active and you're cool.

If you have already checked in (or received your txt that your checked in), they will not work for room keys or charging to room until you have the front desk also activate them separately to do that (front desk, concierge). They will work for park tickets, fp+ and meal plan right away. I've done this a few times.

If you get them prior to checkin and they are setup in the mde account, they will activate with normal checking for the resort.

They also have more selections at the park including some special edition and ones with effects time to time. She might want to wait and buy it at the park, they will have the same ones she saw on the website too.

Thanks! I mine is on the way now so I will have it before check-in and linked and ready to go. I will be bringing both the one I purchased and the one Disney ships out. Good to know I'll be able to use it as the room key too. I saw the Castle magic band and had to have it.

By checkin, I mean when you finally have a room number. That's when check in is completed.
