Puppy vent!

My frigginfraggin puppy got into my laundry basket and completely tore up three of my bras. I'm well-endowed and these were my best bras, costing about $60 each. I am furious! That little butthead better stay out of my way for a while.

***Disclaimer - I am not going to physically harm him, but I certainly will give him a piece of my mind and I will not be giving him any treats!

Awww...poor baby. He didn't know they cost $60 (I know your pain, though...good bras for those of us who are well-endowed are expensive. I have bought really good ones at a local plus size consignment shop and still paid $35 for one.)

Puppies are precious, aren't they? Mine just turned 1 and is pretty good but occasionally slips into an episode of puppy behavior. The other night while we were watching a movie, I thought he was sleeping behind a chair. No, he was in the other room tearing up a box of envelopes!

I forgot to tell this story on my post. About a month after I first moved in here, my roommate left the dogs with me for three weeks while he went to Dubai. I left the door to my room open one night when I went out to dinner. When I came home, my favorite hat was lying on the living room floor all chewed up. At the time, I didn't know which one had done it (because I didn't know either one was a chewer) but a couple of days later I caught Kody chewing on one of my earrings (just costume jewelry.) He's 8...I would have thought he'd be over the chewing habit (he also chews on his paws and tail out of boredom.)

Oh boy!! Yeah, in the short time our baby has been here, I've lost a few bras, lots of paper items, kids plastic toys, an entire pan of blondies and many, MANY other food items, and most recently, my husband's inhaler - there was only a bit of "juice" left in it, but we were scared for the pup for about 24 hours until his heart calmed down.

But hey - now you get to go new bra shopping - that can be fun!!

Thankfully I've never lost any undergarments to my dogs, but they both have cost us a lot of money over the years! Especially shoes. I have Fred Flintstone feet, so the shoes I buy cost around $100. The one in my avatar used to be a big fan of shoes. Our older dog was worse, though. She once chewed up my husband's glasses while he was asleep!

If ruins anymore clothing yell at him and like you said don't give him treats for awhile. If you can keep him out of areas where you have clothing.

Oh yeah...DD18 has some scratches on her NEW glasses where the puppy chewed them up. I got mad at her though...not the puppy!

You have to puppy proof your house like you would for a baby, even baby gates if necessary.
Puppies teeth and they need to work out their little razor sharp baby teeth so make sure the puppy has it' s own chew toy, not something like an old shoe etc becaue the puppy won't know which is suppoed to be his.

My lab got my brand new glasses (progressive bifocals!) off the kitchen counter and chewed them to bits. He chewed a hole in the wall so big that my DH had to put a heating grate over the hole just to cover it. We've gone through 4 T.V. remotes. He's four and he's still at it. He gets TONS of exercise and attention. It's a good thing for his sake he's so cute!

Not fair to yell at him... if he wasn't being watched, he had no way of knowing not to do it. Sounds like he was out of sight/out of mind... always dangerous with puppies. Like small children -- if there's silence, they're probably up to no good.

Don't feel bad, my puppy ate two pair of prescription glasses, and one night had filet mignon for dinner. Another night had 1=1/2 pounds of raw hamburger, among many other things. She is growing out of chewing up the stupid things, (really-do wire rimmed glasses taste good?), and we are working on keeping food off the counter tops. The funny thing is that she has never chewed up our Crocs, and I thought the first time she had a chance, those would have been irresistible to her.

My biggest laugh about puppy chewing comes from across the street, though. We had some neighbors that kept their dog outside loose on an invisible fence. OK, fine for the day time, but please bring the dog inside at night. The dog barked at anything at anytime, so I had to make numerous "Could you please make your dog stop barking" calls in the middle of the night. They just never got it. Anyway, I loved the woman who lived there, but her DH(now Ex DH) was/is a real tool. So one night (why I don't know) his visiting mother left his $400 shoes outside the back door. Well, let's just say the doggie had one of the most expensive chew toys I have ever heard of. Couldn't have been more poetic if I had thought it up myself!

Thankfully Kiani is not a chewer. The only thing I have to worry about is her puking or pooping in the house if she gets an upset tummy. We normally don't keep a garbage can in the kitchen, just a plastic grocery bag on the handle to the utility room. But when we were renting rooms, one had a garbage can that was short enough for her to stick her nose in, and she spread the trash all over the dining room, on carpet non the less.

I know better than to keep yummy smelling garbage in reach of her. Small bags are easy enough to set on the counter till morning when I take the trash out. Our room-mate has gotten a garbage can for our kitchen, but it sits against a cabinet, and I use the drawstring on the bag and hook it around the drawer handle so she can't knock the can over.

Unless you catch the dog red-handed (er...pawed) in the act of chewing the bra, yelling at him will do absolutely NOTHING. Witholding treats (or affection) will also DO NOTHING. Dogs do not process info like humans do. Yell "No" if you catch the dog chewing and immediately remove the object and replace it with a suitable toy he is permitted to chew.

If you find items chewed up after the fact...there is NOTHING you can do to punish the dog. They will not understand why they are being reprimanded or punished.

As the owner, OP, you have a responsibility to set your puppy up for success by puppy-proofing the house like you would for a toddler. Electrical outlet guards, removal of all chewable items, close doors to rooms he doesn't need to or isn't allowed in to.

I'd be miffed at the lil gut too...but more mad at myself for leaving clothes where he could get to them. Buy him so good chew toys.

Puppies love leather so keep belts and shoes put away!! I've lost some really nice shoes, boots and belts. Look for them when they are being quiet too!!! They are always up to something!
