Puppy toys-budget related

You have received a lot of great advice on toys but I want to ask how much exercise she gets? If she is under exercised she will destroy her toys out of boredom. If your not doing it already she should take a good 30 minute walk a day, if you are already doing that add a second walk and see if it helps.
Just a thought...

Also, bully sticks are great for chewing.

I don't think that's the problem, I can tell when she's getting wound up and needs a walk (or when she tries to turn the doorknob herself :rotfl:) so she gets 4 to 5 15-minute walks a day. Usually at least one of those is running, when my 14yo walks her. We also play fetch with her quite a bit and we have doggie doors so she's free to run the fenced in back yard. She is only crated during dinner and from about 11pm to 8am. I don't think it's the length of time that she's chewing, but the strength of it, plus she uses her paws to pull at the toy, it's really cute.

I have been toying with the idea of getting another puppy because she loves to play with other dogs, she's very social, but I'm not sure I want to add that in the budget right now. Plus I dread potty training another one :scared1:.

Another vote for the Kong Wubba...my labs chew everything including Nylabones, I gave a Nylabone to my oldest lab and she had it half gone within minutes, luckily she threw it up! Watch it with whatever you give it until you are sure. My youngest lab loves a soft toy to use as a pillow, I get her an unstuffed large animal, they only last a few months because the 2 of them fight with it and rip it apart. Then she will carry a little piece around with her, she even got in the trash to get it once.

The kong toys are the only things my dogs don't chew completely up. They love their kongs. I bought the kind you put treats in. You can buy several kong brand treats that go inside the kongs, but you can also use peanut butter and put them in the freezer. They love that!

Oooh, she has a Kong "binky", I didn't think about putting it in the freezer, I'm going to try that tomorrow! I had put it away for awhile because she got bored with it, I think it's time to pull it back out. She loves to chew ice cubes.

I've seen the antlers that have been mentioned here on doggyloot.com, but I didn't realize they were something that lasted awhile so I'll give them a try too.

I don't have to worry about her chewing the kids' toys except in the garage, the indoor toys have to stay upstairs and she's not allowed up there. I do have to make sure the outside toys get put away or she'll chew those, she got ahold of a roller blade insert a couple days ago and had it torn apart before I could get it.

My dog has Kong and Orca brand toys. He ate everything else, including Nylabones. He also likes regular tennis balls.

Our vet. told us not to give him anything with a string on it. She said the string breaks and usually gets digested.

Enjoy your new family member.

I have 3 dogs-2 standard Poodles and 1lab/pit/?/mix-shes got the "pit jaws of steel" so for her I've found the best luck with deer antlers-the bigger and fatter the better!! I also swear by Kong Wubbas and the black kong and have 2 in the freezer now stuffed with yogurt/PB/and bread-they all love these-go on Kongs web site and there are great ideas and recipes. All mine are crated when no one is home and they all associate their crates with getting toys/kongs so no problem getting them to go in.I leave the crates open even when home and they will go in when they've had enough-its their comfort zone.

I don't believe in giving dogs toys that look like people things they aren't supposed to chew. So in our house no toys that look like kids toys, stuffed animals, or shoes. If the kids leave a stuffed animal on the floor how is the dog supposed to know it's not a chew toy?

For big dogs, stuffed toys can be a hazard because they're easily chewed and ingested. Same with tennis type balls.

We use large rope toys, Kong, nylabone, and full sized footballs from yard sales. The footballs are always a favorite, even flat, and they don't chew through them.
Wouldn't work if your kids play football though- mine don't! ;)

Our dog would destroy dog toys in the blink of an eye. We stopped giving her what she destroyed, especially as we have young kids and didn't want the dog confusing her toys with theirs (which has happened). The Tuffie toys are pretty durable. http://www.tuffietoys.com/ Kong and similar ones are durable as well. Beyond that, I just stick to bully sticks for the dog to chew and she seems fine.
Those stink so bad and my dog will chew for hours and if I don't watch and take it away, my dog swallows it and pukes within a few hours.

I walk my dog 3 times a day and within the last month he has been ripping every one of his toys open.

I got him a wrap around jacket this winter and it had Velcro closing on it. This was his favorite. I would stick the Velcro to the carpeting and he loved pulling it off the carpeting. He just wrecked it, and I am going to Joann Fabrics and I am going to make him something more durable.
