I am so sick of cleaning up poop & pee in my house. When is this dog going to get it? I thought it was getting better, ie. she was only pooping in the house but guess what I found? A nice little spot at the end of the hallway that she has been using as her own personal toilet. GRRRR! I can't believe I didn't notice this before. In addition, I seem to be the only person in my house that can take her outside and stay outside with her until she actually goes. Why is that???

I guess I get to look forward to new carpet, which I've wanted for a while. I just didn't think this would be the reason I got it. :headache:

Beagal puppy dug a hole in my carpet! Got rid of him!! Now I'm looking at hardwood flooring!

have you tried crate training???

Crate training works very well and with 3 big dogs I would have lost my mind if I hadn't done this.

Aww..how frustrating!

My dog took about 6 months to train. Lucky for me I have no carpeting to get ruined, but it was still gross!!

We finally resorted to taking him out every 15 minutes for a week, then every 20, then every 25, then every 30 etc. until now he can go about 3 hours.

Good luck!

I agree with the every 15 minutes thing. We had to do that with our dog. It got to where she would expect to go out, then gradually we'd only let her out when she wanted to. It took a while.

We used to let the dog out, he would pee and come back into the house and pee again within 5 minutes! After TWO YEARS he finally was housebroken!! We really don't like this dog and I shutter to think we have like 8 more years of him since he is only 4 now!!

A lot of dogs will pee multiple times outside. It isn't enough for them to go once and then bring them back in. Our dog will pee 2-3 times when going out. We waited for her to stop sniffing around and then we knew it was time to bring her in.

We also crate trained her and she slept through the night the first night we brought her home with no accidents. She took to training right away because of that too. Mainly what you do is take the dog outside, if she doesn't go to the bathroom after a while, carry her in the house, put her in the crate for 15 minutes and then carry her back outside, don't let her walk outside so she feels the grass under her feet and knows that is where she is supposed to pee. If she goes to the bathroom, bring her in the house and play with her. If not, back in the crate for 15 minutes. Gradually increase the crate time and she will catch on quickly.

You need to get an odor remover and soak your carpet with that so your dog doesn't think that is a place she should be going.

....and confining your pup when out of the crate(keep him/her in the room closest to the door outside),you're pup may never be trained! Housetraining your dog is not a difficult thing. Is it time consuming? YES! when you first bring a pup into your house, you should be bringing him/her out after he wakes up,after eating, after playing and whenever you see him sniffing around. In the begining the idea is to catch him BEFORE he goes in the house. CARRY him to the spot you want him to go. After he goes, give him MUCH PRAISE, pick him up and back inside. It really doesn't take much time for a pup to "get it",but you have to be consistent in his training. Good luck!

I know it's frustrating, but it sounds like the pup has too much freedom right now. In the times you can't watch him every second, he should either be in his crate or confined to an area like the kitchen. I agree with others above, too, it's hard, but you have to take the pup out very frequently to teach him the right way to go. It takes time, but eventually most get it (with that being said, I know nothing about small dogs, LOL). Good luck. paw:

P.S. IME, once the carpet gets soiled, they always want to go back to that spot. You need to do a really good job cleaning that carpet if you don't want to have him go back there weeks from now after all your hard work. ;)

:worship: All hail crate training!!!

The ONLY way to go!!

AMEN!
We had our puppy housebroken in 3 weeks by taking him out every 20 min. and using the crate for those times when we couldn't watch his every step.

With my puppy's I didn't give them the run of the house until they were about a year old.

When I was gone they would be in their crate.

When I was home and couldn't watch them, I would have a baby gate across the kitchen door and they would stay in there (more room than the crate and the floor is tiled)

When I was home and watching tv in the family room, they would be with me and I would watch them like a hawk.

When we were asleep at night, they would be in the crate.

When they looked like they wanted to pee on the floor I would blow a whistle to get their attention and then rush them outside. Then after they would go, they would always get a treat.

Another suggestion that I can give you is to take the puppy to puppy kindergaten somewhere. That way you can share your stories with other puppy owners and get some helpful advice.

Good luck and try to not get to frustrated - puppys are alot of work!!!!

The dog will "get it" as soon as you are ready to stop the pup with the run of the house. No freedom until housebroken.

The dog is either in the crate when it cannot be watched by YOU (not young kids), and on leash in the house.
My are 1 yo and still have boundaries in my house. Crates at night or if we go out. Not alllowed upstairs.
Until they are about 3 years old, they should have alot of "rules".

We bell trained our dogs. We put a little bird bell on the back door, we would ring it, take them outside, give the command..."go potty", then praise. Dogs "get it" pretty quick.
Secret is not let them have freedom in the house right away. The leash is the best because when they go to potty, you can catch them and correct them. After a couple of "on leash" accidents/corrections they will get the message.

Also if you are not doing any walking or training with the pup you need to do that as well. Critical to the dog taking you seriously.

Some here (on the dis) had also mentioned tethering.
Attaching the dogs leash to your beltloop and having constant contact.
No way they can sneek off to pee that way

Are you 100% sure there's nothing wrong with the dog medically? I ask this because we had a very hard time potty training Toby in the beginning because he was sick and we didn't know it.

He was going to the bathroom VERY frequently, both inside and outside, in the middle of the night - really he had no schedule whatsoever. Finally, one day while cleaning up the millionth pile in the house, I saw worms in his poop. Apparently when he was dewormed, he was treated for the wrong worm so the other worms were thriving. Once we got that fixed, he was fine, and it probably only took a few more days to get him trained.

Now, if your dog is completely fine, seriously look in to crate training. It's been a lifesaver with Toby (my beagle).

Crate training, a doggy door, treats and praise, praise, praise, praise!!!! All together and you'll have him housebroken in no time!! Good Luck!!

Good point about the worms and stuff. :thumbsup2 A trip to the vet is probably a good place to go if he hasn't been checked in awhile.

I crate-trained Chloe and when I got to her in the morning, I carried her until she was outside. Then and only then did I let her down. I told her to go "pee-pee" and she'd do her thing, not so much because I told her to, but because she'd been holding it all night. Then I praised her to the point of making an idiot out of myself, in front of my neighbors.

I didn't work, so for the first two weeks or so, I watched her like a hawk. If she slept, I relaxed. If there was something that I needed to do and she was awake, I'd put her in her crate.

Every hour (or when I let her out of her crate), I'd take her outside and watch for the signs that she needed to "go". As soon as I saw them, I'd start telling her to go "pee-pee" again. Then I'd do my idiot routine.

It didn't take long for her to start linking my "pee-pee" comment, to her going to the restroom. I think she maybe had two-three accidents in the house and at least one of those, was from me letting her walk to the door first thing in the morning.

If I caught her fixing to do her thing inside, I'd scoop her up, with a loud "outside", place her on the grass and tell her to go "pee-pee".

As far as your carpet, I used to do the books and dispatching for a Chem-Dry and there is a spray that can be used on the carpet and the padding for dog/cat urine. It's not cheap and in severe cases, the padding has to be replaced.

Don't give up - they do eventually get it. :)
