Just got a new boxer puppy. She is 4 1/2 weeks old. Very fat, loving and healthy! The breeder told me at 6-7 weeks she needs to go to the vet and get shots and wormed. Now I am thinking that I can buy all that stuff and do it my self at the local farm store. My husband has done that sort of thing for our cows and horses before I believe. Anyway, can you tell me what type of shots she will need and how much they might cost? Thanks.

It's against the law for a breeder to give away a puppy so young. Take the puppy back to the breeder because they still need mother's care at that age. I would report them for giving away puppies at that age. But, if you keep the puppy and don't do any of that, take the puppy to the vet at 7 weeks and get the shots. They don't cost that much.

Besides the puppy being too young to be removed from the mother, it needs to go to the vet now. It needs to be wormed and the shots should be administered by a vet. No credible breeder would release a puppy so young!

You should take the puppy to the vet for a check up as well as the shots. Just because she looks healthy, that doesn't mean that she is. But if you're convinced that you can handle this all on your own, I'm sure that googling a little can provide you with the information that you need regarding inoculations.

Add me to the list that thinks that no reputable breeder would let a puppy go at 4.5 weeks. That is way too young for the pup to be leaving its mother and the litter.

Some breeders will do most anything at Christmas to sell animals. Not near as many impulse purchases after Christmas.

Our Puppy just turned 1, but we got him when he was 4 1/2 months old. From what I can remember he needed to 3 sets of puppy shots, two of them came before we had him. He also needed to be wormed several times before we got him. Then at the first vet appt we had to take a sample and once the vet tested it and no worms then he ended up being on a monthly medicine to keep worms away (heartguard).

Please take your puppy to the vet asap. Just because he is plump doesn't mean he is healthy. Plump puppies can be plump because they are filled with worms.

Enjoy your new puppy.

Puppies shouldn't leave their mother until at least 8 weeks old. They need to be wormed more frequent then adult dogs, this you could do yourself but vacinations should be done by the vet. Doubt you would be able to buy the shots anyway.

At the very least, your puppy needs to see a vet to be tested for heartworms. And if he doesn't have them, then he needs to be put on a once a month preventive medicine so that he doesn't get them.

Also, what are you feeding the poor thing?

I will call an make an appointment today! Oh, pedigree puppy food. The soft kind in the can. We got our very first boxer at 5 weeks old and she did ok, well until she jump into our pool last week and drowned, she was 2 1/2 years old. We loved her so much.

The puppy is much too young to be away from it's mother.

Reputable breeders do worming, shots, etc before the puppies go to their new homes.

Ummmm NO, that puppy is way too young to be away from his Momma!!! Take him back!! That is just ridiculous! No credible breeder would give a pup that young away and all breeders should always get your puppy their first shots and a vet check before you take them home. OP this is not a good situation, you may love the pup but he is simply too young, we found kittens that were 4 weeks old (no Momma nearby) and took them in, they ate the first night we had them but then they didn't eat and one of them died. 4.5 weeks is too young. :(
Yes, you can get the shots at a farm store but you still need to take the pup to the vet, being plump doesn't mean healthy. :(

As others have said, a reputable breeder who cared about their dogs would not sell a puppy that was 4.5 weeks old with no shots.

The fact that you bought that puppy at that age and now want to save $$ by skimping on vet care is very sad.

FYI, the SPCA would have provided you with a healthy pup with all of it's shots up to date and spayed/neutered. Probably for less than you paid that breeder.

The puppy will need a variety of shots but most definitely should be with its mother still 8-12 weeks is the recommended weaning period depending on when the mother stops feeding them. My mom got a boxer pup at 5 1/2 weeks and it is just way to young for a variety of reason. Puppies learn a lot from their pack before they are ready to be rehomed! Like bite inhibition. Poor poor breeder to release the puppy so young.

They most certainly would not!

OP: Your "breeder" does not have his dog's best interest at heart. Sounds like they are using their dog(s) to make a quick buck. They need to be vet checked, wormed, and UTD on all shots before they are released to their forever homes. Your boxer is way too young to be away from her mom. She should be at least 8 weeks old. Your "breeder" has no business breeding animals if they have no idea what they are doing!

ETA: If these puppies are registered the breeder needs to be reported.

OP, I'm sorry your dog drowned - what steps have you taken to ensure that the new puppy won't meet the same fate? Our dog is terrified of water, but she can swim (we make her swim to the steps every summer, just in case she falls in - although she won't go near the pool). I don't think boxers can swim?

You obviously put no research into getting another puppy, and ended up buying one from a bad breeder. The chances that you're puppy is completely healthy are slim. If you had a dog for more than 2 years, didn't you get that dog vaccinated and heartworm checked on a regular basis?

Our last dog got out of our yard, and got hit by a car, 11 years ago. It took me close to 10 years to get another dog (rescue), because of the guilt I felt not keeping that dog safe (she kept digging under the fence, and having a 1 and 3 year old at the time, sometimes I wasn't watching her in the yard). I decided I'd be totally able to be responsible for a dog before getting one. Buying a 4 week old puppy makes it seem like this was more of an impulse buy, than something well thought out.

Bring the puppy to the vet ASAP. Sadly, if you return this puppy to the breeder, I'm guessing the breeder will try to sell the poor thing to someone else not informed.

Good point about needing to learn things from the other puppies in the litter.

I'm really disturbed that someone would take a puppy that young and then try to get out of taking it to a vet. I feel so bad for that little pup.

Ya, I made an appointment with the vet. So she will see him on January 8th.:thumbsup2 I wish I could post pics of her. Maybe I will figure out how.

Feel bad for the pup. This dog will get birthday parties, Easter baskets, Christmas photos with santa, Christmas gifts, everything. It will live in the lap of luxury. It will sleep in the beds in our home, not outside! It will be given the best of the best. Trust me.:thumbsup2
