It is just horrible. A lot of dogs will need new homes. I am seriously considering taking one but am not sure how our older dog (pure breed ESS adopted from shelter almost 2 years ago-now about 8 yrs old) will react.

If you do, be prepared for possible vet bills. Puppy mills are noted for sickly dogs. Be sure you get one with a clean bill of health.

Most older dogs do fine with puppies.

I hope you can take one. I'm glad they seized the dogs.

I saw this story on the local news either last night or the night before. It just broke my heart!!! I so wish I could take one (or more!) of those wonderful little faces that they showed.

They all looked so scared on the news. Why do people do this?

I would be glad to take some but I already have 7 dogs of my own.

This sort of thing makes me sick. My DH is from Hillsville and it is a very nice town. But bad things can happen in nice places. :sad2: I have a terrier mix puppy who could use another puppy to play with. I think I may look into adopting one.

:sad1: This is why buying a puppy from a pet store is so frowned upon in posts here - that's the primary market for these puppy mills. If people don't buy from there, the mills won't be be financially lucrative and eventually fade away (hopefully). So far they haven't found many health problems with these pups as they've been examining them, but you never know later. I'm awfully tempted myself (think DC and Fairfax County animal shelters have gotten some of them) but really hate to foist one on my 13 year old rescue... she'd be less than pleased to deal with another hellion. Don't think she's forgiven us yet for bringing in the goofy lab puppy 7+ years ago

Yes, that's what I'm afraid of. My rescue is really not very social. He's OK with dogs on the street, but for some reason HATES dog parks and I afraid of really aggressive dogs (even if they are only being playful).

If you decide not to take in one of the puppies how about giving to one of the shelters that took in some of the puppies.

One of them is Pets Alive. They are a no-kill animal shelter that runs only on donations. They took in 180 puppies. They do such awesome work!

I'm too far away to adopt one and too far away to volunteer but I'm making a donation as I have done before to their shelter.

Just last night I was reading their website where they took in these puppies and see they are overwhelmed with applications for the puppies - which is wonderful so I thought I would tell you guys about them here. I hope this post is okay.

Michelle - that's a wonderful idea and I'm glad you posted this! Giving $$ could help the pups' immediate needs while homes are being found.....

This is why so many of us get so heated about buying from pet stores.

Most older dogs will be fine with a new one. The rescue taking the pups will be careful to find the best fit, too.

Poor babies =(

Thanks, I was a little worried about posting it and hoped no one would mind.

OK, I have been looking for a puppy since I lost my 14 yr old dog last Christmas. I think I would be able to take one of these animals but since I'm not from there and am fairly spastic about searching for info, I'm not so sure I'd be able to find the shelters easily. I live in PA so the drive would not be too far. If anyone hears any more info please either PM me or post here.

I just checked Pets Alive and they are not taking any more applications. If anyone hears anything else please PM me.

Thanks

I know Sara at Pet's Alive is swamped with applications for the pets but I bet you could send her an email asking if any shelters in your area have any of the puppies. It may take a while for her to get back to you because of the volume she is dealing with right now though but it is worth a shot. If I hear of any in your area I'll let you know.

The Washington Animal Rescue League is taking some of them - they've been in the news around here. You might contact them (they have a website) and see what they say. This Rescue League also still has some dogs left from Hurricane Katrina rescue so they've likely got their hands full. Caveat - I have NO personal knowledge of this rescue and how they're run, and no connection to them. They're often on the news in the DC area taking care of animals when things happen and they have a decent reputation from what I hear. I believe Fairfax County Animal Shelter has or will be getting some also. Given the sheer number of animals involved I suspect quite a few shelters are taking them in. Also, there were many females picked up with nursing puppies and these have been placed in foster homes for the time being. That means that later on these nursing pups will become available so the need for homes will continue for a while....

Sick, Sick, Sick. How people can treat their dogs this way is beyond me.

I will take it one step further - this is why so many of us get so heated over irresponsible breeders period.

It doesn't matter if you are breeding the top winning dogs in the nation, designer dogs, backyard dogs -

You just don't breed unless you have a good portion of the litter already spoken for.

Shelters and rescues are already up to their eyeballs in unwanted dogs. It is irresponsible to add to the problem.

Poor puppies. Glad to see they are getting lots of aps for them.

And for those considering one of these dogs but may live too far away - check your local shelter. They are full of dogs in the same circumstance, just have not had the same press coverage.

The montgomery county humane society got some. A few are up on their website, but none are cleared for adoption yet.

The poor puppies have to be checked out by a vet and spayed or neutered. I just don't get how people can breed puppies for the heck of it and not love on them and care for them.

Can you imagine how long it is taking to get all them checked out?

When they raided the place apparently there were about 900 dogs. A few days later (when some of the pregnant *****es had whelped) they have over 1100. Can you imagine?

It may take months to get everyone sorted out.

Also, the adults may not be adoptable because they have never been socialized and spent their entire live in a small cage.:sad1:
