Warning - yucky subject...

Our puppy, Clyde, for the past couple of days has had diarrhea (sp?). Is there anything that I can give him to help firm up his stool.

He is a Springer Spaniel pup almost 5 months old and weighs approx. 27#.

I wish that I could just give him Ammodium AD and be down with it. With the exception of the diarrhea, his behavior is normal.

Dh thinks he ate something that he shouldn't of on Saturday while he was out shoving snow.

I feel so bad for Clyde, his poor bum, I wish I had a doughnut ring for him to sit on....

Any advise would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Call your vet and see what dosage of immodium, if any, you can give the poor pooch. See what the vet suggests. I would think at 5 months old you could give him some sort of dosage. Even if it is a quarter chewable tablet, or whatever in liquid form.

Try white rice. I always give the dog rice mixed in with the food when this happens.

We had an English Springer who frequently had this problem. The vet told us to make sure he wasn't getting any "human treats" and try boiled hamburger mixed with plain white rice. I suggest you call your vet before changing his diet though.

Best wishes for your pup... missing my Mischief. :(

Oh the poor baby!

The white rice suggestion is a good one. I have used that but, mosty I use canned pumpkin...the kind without spices or sweetener...just 100% pumpkin. Don't give any of his regular food and replace it with an equal amount of pumpkin...or if you want do rice and pumpkin. Do this for a couple meals and he should be fine.

If however, the loose stool returns after he is back on regular food...take him to the vet and get it checked out. I would stay away from amodium...it can mask a serious problem and it really isn't good to use on dogs.

Good luck!

Canned pumpkin is a miracle food - get the 100% pure pumpkin, not pumpkin pie mix.

You can feed boiled hamburger/chicken and rice (pref brown) with some pumpkin if you'd like but usually just adding pumpkin to the kibble will firm things up.

If it doesn't clear up in 2-3 days with the pumpkin, I'd take a trip to the vet to check for worms.

Please make sure you aren't feeding him pet food that has been recalled.

This is exactly what our vet says to do. Then gradually switch back to dog food my mixing a little at a time.

Thanks everyone! I have never heard of using pumpkin, I will have to try that.

I don't have to worry about the recalled food because he only gets dry food.

I did call the vet and they want a stool sample (can we say eekkk!) but that is all that they said (to check for worms.) He was cleared his last stool sample, but they said they like to have 2 negative samples. I can understand the concern, but that really doesn't help him now! I think that I will try the pumpkin.

Thanks again everyone!

My dog has a tendency to eat things outside too (goose poop being at the top of her list :scared: ) Needless to say she ends up with a nasty case of the runs.
I called the vet and they recommended immodium (1/2 tablet) and plain yogurt with active cultures (couple tablespoons). The cultures in the yogurt attack the bacteria in her system.
He basically told me 'you dont run to your doctor everytime you get it, there is no point coming here if she gets it on occassion' Obviously he also cautioned me to keep an eye on her to make sure it was the result of something she ate as opposed to a sign of something more serious.
I started adding the yogurt to her diet 3 or 4 times a week and we havent had any problems since. She loves the yogurt and it doenst hurt her.

Hope your pup feels better soon

all good info, just echoing the suggestion of BROWN rice over white. It's a much healthier alternative.
