Pulling into a parking space backwards....

One of my old bosses who managed a shopping center told me that people who back in are the ones that get the second and third look by security guards. They think that they purposely park like that for a quick getaway after shoplifting or breaking into a car or just causing trouble.....I had never thought about it :confused3

At my dh's work they MUST back into parking spots and if you drive a company vehicle you MUST back into your parking spot NO MATTER where you are.

I thought the place I work was the only one that required this....

This was a safety mandate from our corporate office. Though parking lot issues have never been a problem the idea was to make people think safety when the came to work.

People who back into spots so they can just pull straight out are far better than all the idiots who can't turn a steering wheel when they are backing out of a spot.

I never see anyone actually back into a spot. They always choose a spot that they can pull straight through so they are facing out. Every time I am walking through a parking lot to or from a store though, I find myself constantly having to stand there and wait for some idiot backing out of a space to pull straight out, turn the wheel slightly, pull up, back up, turn wheel slightly, pull up, back up..... etc. I just want to rip them from their cars, turn the wheel the whole way and back the car out for them.

Most people suck at parking like this. I've have seen people try to back into a spot and while they were failing at this, I've parked my car (like a normal person) and gotten into the store / work before they even get parked (much less out of the car).
Good for you.

In 99% of cases, there is no need for backing into a spot.
Thank you for analyzing what I need.

Back in people where I live make me nervous because most of my neighbors with their bigger cars cannot back in for nothing (not sure if this is just their driving or they have a hard time seeing??) and scare me because I have seen them scrape cars and attempt many times :scared1:.

So...I got no problem if you back in, but please please....only do it if you know how to!!

I personally never do, I just never had and feel more comfortable going in front first. I also have a habit of always backing up so that I don't cross over the lane of traffic, even if I have to go around a little bit, for me, it feels safer.

Not a big deal at all. I really find it funny the things people get upset about:lmao

EXACTLY!!

Some of you need therapy, seriously. If I let even a fraction of the things get to me as some of you, I wouldn't be able to function properly.

As for the back-up parking. I do it occasionally when the need arises or when I feel like it. Every time?..... No. The people that park at my work (pulling into spots) are always on the line and crooked, so I will back in to the spot next to them so that I can park next to their hack job and still get out of my car. That way the doors are passenger to passenger. If it is driver to driver door, I usually park close to the other line but never over it.

The main point for me is safety.:confused3 I always back into the parking spots at DD's school because I don't want to be backing out AFTER school lets out with small children running around and all the other vehicles trying to leave at the same time. And this is even more important, IMO, for the bigger vehicles which may have a harder time seeing behind them when they back out.

Just wait. Why would you drive through a parking lot with lots of kids wandering through it? I'm a school bus driver and I've learned to wait. You should too.

Personally, I think backers are doing it for some sort of satisfaction. I find it an odd thing to do for gratification but that's what it seems to be.

I always back into parking spaces. For me, it is also a safety issue. It is easier to see backing into a space than backing out. Also, if your battery dies or something else happens where you need to get under the hood, it is much easier to do this when you have backed into a parking space. Trying to get or give a jump when a person has pulled into a space is more difficult (and I have, unfortunately, been in the position of having a battery die or car not start when I have been parked in a parking lot).

99% of the time, I can back into a parking space correctly the first time, without all of the backup, pull forward, backup, pull forward, backup business...

One of MY pet peeves is people who blow thier horns at people who are backing into a parking space, as if it's somehow illegal or wrong. If the few seconds it takes to wait for someone to back into a space is going to make you late, then you should really consider leaving your point of origin earlier. :flower3:

Some places it is illegal and you could be ticketed. I think it has to do with only having one tag and if you back in the police can not see your tag.

Its really not all that common around here to back into spots- there are a few people that do it and it is annoying but if you pull up forward to back into a spot-chances are you will NOT be getting that spot because the person behind you would have zipped head first into that spot before you could back into it!
At the train station lot you get ticketed if you back into a spot.

Seriously, what's the point? Besides making things difficult for the most that pull in forwards.

How does it make things difficult?

1. It seems to take quite a while to pull in backwards - backward, forward, backward, forward, pull completely out and try again because you didn't get it right.

2. Now that you've pulled in backwards, your rear view mirrors are obstructing my ability to get into my back seat. Especially if you have a BIG truck with those rear view mirrors that stick out at least a foot from your vehicle.

This debate again? I drive a fifteen passenger van. If I don't pull in, I usually can't get out. Most of the time, I find spots that I can drive right into. It is also a safety thing, I like to drive out so I know I am not hitting something that I cannot see due to the size of my van.

Really, why do you care?

They would be very busy where I live then as most drivers in my local supermarket back into parking spaces. There is no problem with the number plates either all british cars have plates on the front and on the back.

Yeah, I honestly don't get what the big deal is either. I have started backing into spaces more nad more since getting my hybrid. I cannot tell you how many people and animals I have almost hit since getting it. If it is on electrical power, people don't hear me and will just walk out in front of me or allow their children or animals to. Now, when I am places where kids may be running around (like the parking lot at the pool for example), I back into my space. The kids run through the lot unsupervised and I'm very uncomfortable backing out there.

Sorry if it bothers you, but it really doesn't take but about 30 seconds to do it.

Ummmm...it's a SCHOOL parking lot. There are always kids wandering around what with after school activities, etc....:confused3 Personal gratification has absolutely nothing to do with why I back in. I drive a huge pick-up most of the time and would rather not run over anyone or back into another vehicle when leaving. Period.

Is there a link or something to point me in the direction of this information?? I've never heard of it being illegal to back in. I've been places where there are signs posted saying "Front in parking only", but I've never known of a place where it is illegal to back in. I know that's not an issue here in Maryland. Anywhere (that I've been) that a person CANNOT back in, has a sign posted saying so. :flower3:

It was on our news down here last year before the summer tourist season. Most of the public lots for beach parking (Clearwater, FL) mandate that you must pull in, not back in, so that your license plate is in full view. If not, you could receive a ticket.

damn straight!!! I have been driving trucks for years and can park it on a dime!! MY pet peeve is the women on there cell while in a mini van!!! NOW THAT IS A HUGE ISSUE!!!:scared1:

I guess you don't have a problem with the men on their cell while in a mini van.

You have the same risk of hitting something you cannot see when backing into the space as when backing out. This safety thing just doesn't hold because unless you pull through, you HAVE to go in reverse at some point. Whether you are going in reverse when pulling in or when pulling out is irrelevant.
