Pulling into a parking space backwards....

Ummmm...it's a SCHOOL parking lot. There are always kids wandering around what with after school activities, etc....:confused3 Personal gratification has absolutely nothing to do with why I back in. I drive a huge pick-up most of the time and would rather not run over anyone or back into another vehicle when leaving. Period.

I guess running over someone or backing into another vehicle when arriving is preferable?

You've got amazing mirrors if your side view mirrors permit you to see behind you.

Uh, in order to see (with my own eyes and not a reflection) what I see in my side view mirrors, I would have to turn around and look behind me. So, yes, these mirrors (as well as the one inside the car) ALL provide a view of what is behind me. How do you have your mirrors adjusted?

You have the same risk of hitting something you cannot see when backing into the space as when backing out. This safety thing just doesn't hold because unless you pull through, you HAVE to go in reverse at some point. Whether you are going in reverse when pulling in or when pulling out is irrelevant.

Actually you don't---

B/c people don't use an actual parking space as a travel path as much.:confused3

The theory doesn't hold b/c you choose to not allow it--despite numerous posters posting somethign to the contrary.

Just b/c you don't believe it to be safer--that's just your justification to condemn others to make yourself feel better about your driving and parking decisions.

It doesn't make it so, though.

So---you look behind you--b/c your SIDE view mirrors do not give you the full view. Thus, they are not REAR view mirrors.:confused

No matter how much I adjust a SIDE view mirror, it will not provide a REAR view. (which is why you have to turn your head as you have just stated)

I guess you don't have a problem with the men on their cell while in a mini van.

lol...I do not see many men in mini vans! I have a brand new truck and I have had three idiot women on cell phones Not paying attention!! one ran a stop sign and the other two, had there phones up there butt! Men, on the other hand....just cannot drive!;)

With this logic--isn't a waiting car at risk for being backed into when someone is leaving a parking space by backing out? :confused3

And yes, I've been hit twice by morons backing up out of their space b/c--evidently they trusted their side view mirrors for that rear view way too much.

I've never hit a vehicle backing in (it is no different than parallel parking btw where I've never hit a car either)--but folks have hit me backing out.

I wonder why that is.:confused3

None of the mirrors give you a full view.

None of the mirrors give you a full view.

But you stated that your side view provide a rear view---ETA: Your actual statement:
These are the mirrors I am referring to--they give you a view to the rear. They don't and now you are backpedaling.

Your argument is full of holes--especially when one weighs in about the very legal parallel parking.

I guess some people will never believe this bit of common sense.:confused3 Even AAA recommends backing into a spot unless it is illegal to do so in that area.

From AAA:

"Refrain from reverse . If possible, avoid backing out of a space by either backing into it or “pulling through” two spaces that are open nose-to-nose. In some municipalities, however, backing into spaces amid moving traffic is illegal and, by impeding traffic flow, can do more harm than good."

There are places where you will be ticketed for backing in or pulling through. My college campus is an example. The reasoning for this is that our permits are required to be on the back window. Thus, if you back in or pull through, that permit is no longer visible from the street. If our parking enforcers see you parked like this, it is an automatic ticket (and until it is paid you can not get grades, register for classes, or get your diploma).

So, just know the rules of the area you are parking at!

What I said is that the mirrors on the side of your car (rear view, side view, whatever) provide a view to the rear. When I look in them, I see what is behind me. Not necessarily what is directly behind me but whatever I see in there is in the area behind me.

Call them what you will. Any mirror provides a view of what you cannot see with your own eyes. Your own eyes provide you a view of what is in front of you so a mirror (whatever mirror) would provide you a view of behind you. Unless the mirror is unusually large, regardless of where it is, it will not provide you with a full view.

I back in because I would rather pull out of the spot facing foward so I can be sure I'm not going to run anyone over.
Same here! :rotfl:

I rarely back in because I am one of those drivers that takes awhile to do the whole backing in thing but if there's no one around and plenty of room, you can bet I'll back in. :thumbsup2

Plus, backing in allows for a much quicker get away :goodvibes

Goodness! So much discussion over the issue of pulling in or backing in to a parking slot!

Anyway, this is exactly why, when I go to the grocery store or mall, I simply parallel park in three parking spots (handicapped, preferably, since they are so close to the store entrance). No muss, no fuss.

I know! I was kind of surprised to see this back on the first page this morning.

Well, there's nothing wrong with a healthy discussion.

Just wait. Why would you drive through a parking lot with lots of kids wandering through it? I'm a school bus driver and I've learned to wait. You should too.

Personally, I think backers are doing it for some sort of satisfaction. I find it an odd thing to do for gratification but that's what it seems to be.

Oh this is too funny :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: What is your analysis of those people who pull foward into spots, we should call them pullers so we don't confuse them with the backers. I'm all ears

It was on our news down here last year before the summer tourist season. Most of the public lots for beach parking (Clearwater, FL) mandate that you must pull in, not back in, so that your license plate is in full view. If not, you could receive a ticket.

In that situation I understand it is so that a license plate is visable. Here in NY we have plates..both front and back. So that situation wouldn't come into play very often.
I have seen signs in our town parking lot for the train requesting that they wanted you pulling in..again, so that the sticker required for using the lot was visable. (it's placed on the back window) Meaning the folks checking didn't want to have to get out of their cars to see if you had a town sticker on your car. I understand that pulling in to the space is required in such circumstances. Other than that...I back in. One shot. In fact, because I have a big front on our full size SUV..I've always found back in MUCH easier. Been driving it for 10 years, and believe me, you'd much rather have me back in than pull in. I don't know why, but I've always been more comfortable backing in, and found it easier to do.

I am so suprised that people care this much. I always figured it was just a matter of preference. Never bothered me that others like to pull in.

Now...how about parallel parking...anyone remember the Seinfeld episode where George pulled past the spot, put on his blinker... and was getting ready to back in, when someone pulled in and took it?.

Now that's a fight to be had pirate:

Do you pull past the spot..and back into it?..That's what I do.
Other's will attempt to pull in to it...usually about 10 times...lol:laughing:

Backing into a space is vastly different then backing out, to suggest so is naive. The risk of hitting someone backing in is far less then when backing out. When you back in you have a complete view of everything around you because you are in the middle of the isle. When backing out you can't see to either side of you because there are cars either right next to you or a few spaces away.

I really don't care which way people choose but don't apply faulty logic to the situation.
