Yeah, I'm pretty darned excited. I think I'm making a good decision. Get the glass that I'll have forever; wait to see what comes out after the D300.

What made you decide to go with the 24-70 over the 70-200 first? Anything---or did ya just flip a coin?

It really was a toss up. I know that I'll want them both. The 70-200 is more widely available, so I figure I can get that at any time. I did run some data, and it seems that I shoot below 70 and above 70 mm just about equally. I know I'll use the 24-70 extensively at Disney--it will probably be my walk-around lens there.

If you feel so inclined, I wouldn't mind if you left the 24-70 with the concierge desk at BWV for safe keeping until we arrive in December. I promise I'll put it to good use

Did you consider the 80-200 f2.8? Granted it doesn't have the VR, but it is an excellent piece of glass. If you don't need the VR, you could take the savings and get a wide angle or fish-eye lens.

I have the 80-200 and the quality is superb.

Good for you. I rented that lens last October for a wedding. Great piece of glass. Its too far out of my price range. Though I am seriously considering getting the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 in the next week or so. Need to shoot more with my 18-135. The last few times I've used it it just doesn't seem right.

Glad to see you say that. I am going to be renting a lens in the coming week and wanted a constant 2.8 telephoto zoom. My options for renting were the 70-200 and the 80-200. The 80-200 is half the price to rent and since I will probably make under $200 from the photos, I didn't want to spend more than half of that on the 70-200 if I didn't have to.

Do you have the AF-D or AF-S version? When you are shooting in daylight, do you have problems with the lack of VR or do you manage to get your shutter speeds fast enough to not have it be an issue? I'd love to see some sample pics from this lens, if you have them.

My grail lens at the moment is Nikon's 14-24 mm f2.8 -- and of course, an FX camera body with which to use it.

That's a lot of lunch money to save!

The 24-70 is one of my workhorse lenses. I use it all.the.time. It's a great piece of glass you'll love it. Surprisingly, even though I use it all the time, it's not my favorite. I MUCH prefer my 70-200 and use it any chance I get. Once you get those two lenses, you have such an arsenal at your fingertips. It's awesome.

Oh... I forgot to ask... Are you planning on upgrading to a full frame soon? If not, did you consider the 17-55? That too is a GREAT lens for the DX crop cameras.

I have the f/2.8 ED AF-D (Mfr# 1986). I have not had a need for the VR based on the shooting that I do. A friend of mine has the same lens (he used to borrow mine), did a lot of shooting at indoor swim meets. He did both hand-held and with a mono-pod. He was thinking of getting the 70-200vr, but was well pleased enough with the 80-200 for the cost difference. If you are doing really low light, then a monopod or tripod would help and then the VR really wouldn't matter.

I was at my nephews play - we were in the back row and the lighting was tough.

Most of my other shooting is outside at track and cross country meets. The 80-200 works great.

You'll love that lens! I bought mine earlier this year when I heard that Nikon was going to be raising their lens prices. This photo was taken with the 24-70.

And just to tease you with the 70-200 2.8. This is the lens that ruined me - it was my first "pro" type Nikon lens.

Neither of these photos had any sharpening applied in camera or in post. They are just incredibly sharp lenses. It's hard to say which one I prefer. They are both really great lenses.
