Hi,

DS will be 23 months when we gfo to Disney. He is not yet toilet trained (but does say "pee pee" and likes to carry around his Sesame Street potty seat).

I'm not sure if he will be by the time we leave for Disney (Aug 31).

I recently bought a pack of pull ups and find them great for traveling. As right now DS doen't sit still for much, it's so much easier to change DS on the go with pull ups then regular diaper. And the got the kind that I can easily rip off the sides to remove the diaper.

I'm thinking pull ups will be easier on the plane and at Disney. My only concern is absorbancy...they don't seem as absorbant as a regular diaper (which makes sense) and I don't mind if I have to change them more often.

I was wondering has anyone used pull ups when your child wasn't yet toilet trained (or being toilet trained) and how did you find them in comparison to regular diapers...did they leak thru alot and what about if he (excuse me on this) takes a big poop?

Thanks.

I found Pull Ups pretty useless for potty-training. They feel like a diaper to a child, so it's hard for them to not use them as diapers. Also, they're not as absorbent as diapers and they're more expensive.

Hpwever, I did use Pull Ups for naps and overnight once my kids were potty-trained. My kids are extremely heavy sleepers and didn't always wake up when nature called. I also used them for the plane ride to WDW when DD was 3 and had only been trained for a couple of months. I was worried that she'd have to go and the seatbelt light would be on or that she'd fall asleep and not realize that she had to go. We were lucky that our flight was uneventful, she used the potty on the plane, and her Pull Up stayed dry.

Finally, although there certainly are boys who train at 2, many don't. Even though your Ds can say the words and likes the potty seat, you could still be months away from training. I'm not trying to discourage you or anything, just wanted to mention it. My DS loved to sit on the potty and loved the potty books and videos, but he still didn't train until he was 3.

Good luck! :goodvibes

Thanks Julie..I'm thinking he won't be trained for Disney (in fact it would probably be easier if he wasn't!).

Since I work I was thinking of trying to train over the 3-day 4th weekend but we got so busy with things I knew it wasn't the right time. I bought underpants just in case as I agree that pull ups won't help with the training.

I'm not thinking of using them for training, but instead as a replacement for regular diapers on our trip. DS is VERY active and at times it's an effort to keep him still to change - even changing him standing up. I've used pull ups on day trips and it was so much easier to change him. So I'm thinking for our Disney trip should I use pull ups instead of his regular diapers as it will be so much easier to change him. I just worry about their effectiveness as "regular" diapers for a child who isn't potty trained or being potty trained.

I'm thinking maybe bringing some pull ups for emergency easy changes (such as on the plane) and regular diapers for most of the trip...

Pampers does make an "Easy Up" pant that is between diapers and Pull-ups. They may be a little more absorbant than the Pull-ups, but I don't know for sure. They do pull on like the pull-ups and have the tear away sides. Huggies does make a more absorbant night-time pull-up as well, they are a little more expensive though.

I don't know if this is a concern with boys - but my girls get "itchy-butts" from pull-ups in hot weather. My pediatrician says girls sometimes get like a yeast infection from pull-ups. Something about the pull ups doesn't "breathe" like diapers- so the girl parts get irritated. I'd like the convenience of the pull up for DD2 when we're there in September - but I'm afraid she'll get the "itchy-butt" as DD5 used to call it!

Big ditto to that! But also like you mentioned pull ups can be easier to change in tight places and they can be especially good for the toddler that screams when you lay them down for a diaper change since it can all be done standing up. If you want pull ups that are more absorbent look for the "overnight" ones. Both my DD's are day time potty trained but still wet at night so we use an overnight pullup and they are more absorbent than other pull ups. But they are even more expensive. Something like that might be good for Disney or an airplane though just for the added protection.

i actually always found pull ups hard to get on, especially hard to get on a sweaty child.
we do the stand up changes all the time. i just have my son hold the two back ends of the diaper i oull it through his legs and then i connect them. i find that much easier than pulling up the pull ups.

i also agree with them being useless. i had bought a pack for my first child and realized quickly that she would get the concept much quicker if she wasnt wearing a diaper.

oh and ona side note, because my child is at the potty train age(although a bit older than yours) are you starting to potty train him now? i only ask because odds are he wouldnt be 100%potty trained at that age within the next month and a half, and arent you nervous that after a week of not training and sticking to your schedule it would be lost?
we had talked of training my son(we do it differently we do a 2 day method when they are older, 3)as he will be 3 soon, but decided it would be too much work to continue it on vacation so im just going to wait till we get home. but i struggled with this decision, so i was just wondering your thoughts.

Hi,

You might want to bring along both, pull-ups and diapers.

Pull-up style diapers can be difficult to change in some public places. If there isn't a changing table, or your son is too big or won't lay on it, or too old to be changed off the beaten path but still in a "public area," you may find yourself trying to change him in a bathroom stall, with some very disgusting, wet and dirty floors. You may be able to rip the old pull-up off, but may need to remove his pants or shorts, and sometimes his shoes to get the bottoms off, to be able to put a new pull-up back on. What you end up with is a child in socks, or bare feet, with no where to stand. A small child trying to balance on a toilet seat needs to place his hands on the seat to hang on... yuck.

Some pull-up style brands can be opened up as a diaper would, placed on the child and sealed or "velco-ed" back up, eliminating the need to remove the shoes and pants in order to put a pull-up on, but I would test out the different brands, first, to make sure it will stay together, otherwise, you will definitely experience leaks.

(BTW - we never open the sides before using the pull-up, I wouldn't trust it to stay together, but other have told me they've had some luck.)

As for the different brands...

The pampers Easy-Ups are softer to the touch.
The Huggies Pull-Ups have a harder feel, but are a little thicker.
Huggies also makes an Over Night Pull-Up.

I think pull-ups are personally the WORST invention. They did nothing to help potty train DD any sooner.Plus, more leaks thru clothes and fanny rashes from them.I put her in pullups at 2 1/2.She did not potty train till 3 1/2 and well after I refused to buy the pull ups anymore. They do not hold urine or stool very well, and kids like them because they have the cool designs, and they can change them themself( I kid you not, my DD would change her own)...I even tried the ones that get cool when they are wet...dd still peed in them. Many like em...If i have another baby, definitely No pull-ups.

Thanks for all the input....I think I will use a combination..mostly have his regular diapers and then bring pulls ups for the "awkward times" - I think mostly on the plane. I keep forgetting, unlike most public places, Disney has tons of clean baby changing areas!

I have just one problem with the Pull Ups - DH, on one of his COSTCO runs (one of his favorite places to go) bought 2 boxes of Huggies pull up! (he can get over excited about something as I mentioned we may wanat to try pull ups for our trip). So now I have over 100 Huggies Pull Ups! I've been using them for quick changes in the car when we're traveling and such and I guess I will bring a pack of the overnight ones to Disney (they come with daytime and night time pull ups!)

IMTHATGIRL - you make a good point about feet on the floor and such when changing pull ups. But in recent tries I find I can pull the pull ups over my sons sandals and don't have to take them off. Also, what I like to do is sit (I put a protective cover on toilet seat in public stall) and put my son on my lap and pull the pull ups over his feet with him sitting then stand him up (with shoes on) to pull up rest of way.

I don't plan to toilet train him before Disney - I think it would be asking too much of him (and us). Right now I'm just gettting him aware of the toilet and things like pee, pee...sometimes he will come up to my mom when she's watching him and say "pee pee" meaming he has a wet diaper. I got the 3-day toilet training method online and plan to use that. But after Disney - not before.

ONE OTHER QUESTION..RE DIAPER STUFF: Huggies has disposable diaper changing pads which I think are great - they are thicker than most and very durable. They had 2 sizes one for infant and a larger size for toddlers. I LOVE the larger size and CAN'T FIND THEM ANYWHERE! I've checkd different Babies R Us, Target, Shop Rite, Stop N Shop...and nothing. Has anyone bought these disposable changing pads lately and can you tell me where you found them??? Thanks!!!

I've taken both of my kids to Disney on pull-ups. (Specifically Huggies) And they've done great. I've personally never had a problem with them leaking or not 'holding everything in'. The times we have gone were late Sept and Mid May. I don't know if this is true for others, but my boys actually pee less when it's hot out. We used roll on baby powder to help prevent chafing everything went just fine.

if thats true it means they need more fluids, you pee less when you start to dehydrate.

We used pullups on my DD at 18 months at disney for the same reason...
Which ever brand you buy, make sure it OPENS on the sides for easy removal. I do not think easy up by pampers do that...
I found pull-up hold enough during the day - but at night I always use a diaper ot "goodnight - night time underwear"

I don't know if this is a concern with boys - but my girls get "itchy-butts" from pull-ups in hot weather. My pediatrician says girls sometimes get like a yeast infection from pull-ups. Same sort of thing happens here. My DD didnt potty train until she was 3.5 years old. So at night we've still been using pull ups even though she's 4 now. We have accidently left them on all day a few times (when I've been sick and when we had to take DD#2 to the hospital) and they have caused her troubles "down there." They rubbed her legs causing a raw spot and it irritated her bottom.....even though she had not peed in the pull up.

So I guess they really are not very breathable. I probably would not do pull ups the whole time....maybe just for on the plane, like you mentioned. Although, I'm pretty sure they make regular diapers that just pull up. I believe they are called Easy Ups and they are like regular diapers, they just go up like pull ups.

When we went to WDW in 2000 I had 2.5 yr old twins who were trained for only a few months. We found after a few days that the inconvience of being on 45 min lines, monorail rides, walks/waits to get into parks, restaurants, etc were too much to expect of them in just underwear...so we put them back in pull-ups for the trip only. They did much better & we had an easier time as adults instead of being on alert or visiting a bathroom every 30 min. When we got home, we took them away, no problem.
