Pull Through Sites?

Hi! I am new to the camping boards. Before a surprise (to my sister and I and our kids) trip in January we hadn't been to the fort since 1983 with our parents in their 1972 Chevy DynaVan.

We have a 38 foot Raptor (5th wheel toy hauler) and my sister and I have a reservation in July for a preferred site, just us and the kids. We are driving from PA. I am comfortable driving on the highway, etc, it's just the backing in that has me nervous.

I thought that I read somewhere that there were 2 pull thru spots, but I can't find any information on them. The CM when I made my reservations a while back was totally clueless. He told me that Premium meant it had Internet, Preferred had cable, and Full hook up didn't have cable.

Will we be ok in a preferred site in regards to size? Does anyone know anything about these pull thru sites?

Hi Krista,

As far as I know unless they added them there are no pull through sites at the Fort, if there are in fact only two they may well be impossible to reserve due to demand. All sites have Internet and Cable, only difference is sewer or no sewer and Premium, Preferred and Full only differ in location, and how much sand pad or no sand pad you have. The more expensive sites are not necessarily the largest ones (Premium) but are located closer to the Marina and Settlement.

Be sure to specify on your reservation the size of your rig and number of slideouts/awnings.

The more expensive sites are not necessarily the largest ones (Premium) but are located closer to the Marina and Settlement.

The "PREMIUM" are the most expensive and have the large "all concrete" pads and patio. The "PREFERRED" sites (100,200) are closest to the Marina and (they are about $5-$10 less per night than the premium and $5-$10 per night more than the full hook-up) 300 is the preferred pet loop only further back. They have concrete pads to park on and the rear area is a sand pad.

NO PULL THRUS. I'm sure that if you are having some problem backing either someone will help if asked. I think that if you mentione your apprehension when you check in they will send a CM down to help as well,

There use to be two pull through sites in the 1200 loop. They backed up to the main road so you could easily just pull into them. However, when they redid the sites with new plantings, they converted them back to back-in sites. Don't know why because I'm sure it was very beneficial to alot of people.

As far as backing in, let us know when. We would love to watch. Pull up in our golf carts, beer's in hand. Placing bets. Giving directions.

Hi Krista. Just my 2 cents, but if you are really nervous about backing in, I would choose a premium site. The reason I say this......it is a much wider concrete pad and gives you more flat/level surface to manuever on which means that there is less of a possibility of running into a tree. DH does everything really well with our 5th wheel EXCEPT backing in. I am always on the lookout for pull thrus wherever we take the 5th wheel. That being said, this past Thanksgiving.....our first but not last to the Fort, we stayed on a premium site. DH said it was the easiest back in site he has ever parked on. It would have been even easier if the folks across the street hadn't parked their Christmas inflateables almost in the road. Took up some valuable real estate he could have used for manuevering.

Campers are a great lot. If you just let someone know, there is bound to be someone around who would be more than happy to help. We've lent a helping hand several times to people who needed a good spotter to help them get on site.

I agree with the above post. I would request a premium site. I own a Cyclone which is 39' and the premium sites are wider and far easier than the preferred or full.

You have plenty of time to practice backing and gain confindence.
Take your setup to a large empty parking lot when the store is closed and practice away.
This is how I learned with our pontoon boat. By the time I was finished I could go from one end of the parking lot to the other, around all of the traffic divider strips, and back the boat in between parking space lines.

If you have a problem or feel you can't do it just tell front desk they will send a CM to back it in for you

I want to try to avoid paying the extra $10 a night for the premium if I can. We are planning on 3 weeks so that really adds up. I will definately do some more practicing! The first time I drove it without my husband there to back it in he had called the campground ahead of time and they said she'll have no problem she's on a cul-de-sac. Well my definition of a cul-de-sac doesn't include trees in the middle of it. I ended up letting the owner of the campground back it in and didn't feel too bad when it took him a good 10-15 minutes to get it through the maze of trees.

However, we are planning on arriving July 2nd if anyone needs some amusement.

As far as backing, maybe you could go to an empty parking lot early on a Sunday morning or something before your trip to practice and see if you can feel more comfortable?
