Yes, you absolutely have a right to your opinion. But you have to see that categorizing all public schools based on your limited experiences (only one area of the country, only a few schools) is silly. It would be like going out to a restaurant. You get a bad server who gets your order wrong, your food is cold, etc. You then leave, saying, "I hate restaurants!!" It just doesn't make sense.

I am all about plan B and C so hoping that her dd pass the math classes and risk not graduating on time is a lot of put in one basket.

I know the OP mentioned remedial math at some point. Not sure if that was for HS or CC.

I would at least map out every option to have a successful plan in place.

I do hope that you get it straightened out MD. Just work it as best you can.

You're right. I am just frustrated, exasperated, and angry.

I'm a little confused on something...if she can't pass this class after taking it twice and having multiple tutors, how will she pass it being homeschooled?

For the record: We will not be homeschooling this year. But if we were I would hire a tutor to teach Algebra. That's how a lot of homeschoolers do it. THey hire out what they aren't good at or don't like.

Oh, please, could you be just a little more snarky. You obviously don't know anything about homeschooling if you think that parents can just make up grades off the top of their heads (although, I'm sure there are bad parents who do that). I homeschooled my kids for many years, successfully, I might add. I am a strict teacher and required WAY more of my kids at home than they were ever required in school. We no longer wish to homeschool for a variety of reasons.

Thanks for the support. We are looking at all the options. I think remediation in college is a given, considering how hard DD has worked on this math in HS. She does well in everything else, so I think she will be fine in the right college. We are looking particularly at one community college which has a year-long Freshman Experience program designed to support first year students with the big transition.

While some mommies might do this, most do not. I'm way tougher on my DD and GPA than school would be.


Minky, as a homeschool mom, DD has been doing all her math with Teaching Textbooks. Maybe you could get this curriculum and let her learn it from them and apply it to the classroom. Maybe the teachers are just not getting it to click with her. Just a thought.

She does well in everything else, so I think she will be fine in the right college. We are looking particularly at one community college which has a year-long Freshman Experience program designed to support first year students with the big transition.

FYI, here in MO all universities here have the "Freshman Optional or Required experience". Some of the universities force you to take it and some make it optional.

In my dd's case last yr they sort of forced you in it. Basically all the "good dorms" had the freshman interest groups and if you choose not to be in a interest group, choices were limited with dorm selection.

My nephew had to take it at his university.

So have you applied to the CC yet? When does enrollment begin? Once she gets her application in then you can find out if they can accommodate your dd's needs. The admissions office may work with her. The sooner you get in, the sooner you can work the system. Heck, I would even try to have your dd go in there for an appointment if possible.

Also you should be applying ASAP for universities with rolling admissions. Know the dates that they start.

We're going on college go-sees next week, Choice #2 on Thurs, Choice #1, on Thurs and the CC on Wednesday. It believe the CC has rolling admission. I have encouraged her to take notes as we go and get cracking on her applications in the next few weeks. She will visit our local college sometime in Sept, but she has been on that campus many times. She has some contacts in the fine arts dept already. HS starts Aug 5 and I'd like for her to get this done before Labor Day.
