Pts converted to reservation status - what are the limitations?

Can someone explain what the limitations would be if I used my points for one of the Disneyland resorts (or anywhere outside of DVC, I'm assuming)? I was talking to MS and asked about the cancellation policy - CM explained that if there was a chance I would need to cancel, I should reconsider booking outside of DVC because the points get converted to 'reservation status' and can never be moved back to reserve at DVC, cannot be banked, etc. She made me think twice until I understand fully, especially since I am reserving almost 10 months out - can someone here put this in plain English for me? TIA !

When you use points for a non-DVC resort, the points are immediately converted into reservation points. This means that DVC will use those points to let a DVC room go to CRO for a cash reservation. The cash received from that reservation is then used to pay for your reservation at the non-DVC resort.

Since as soon as you make the non-DVC reservation, the equivalent inventory for that amount of points is removed from the DVC member's inventory, it's as if you have already used the points and what you have instead is a 'credit' equal to the cost of your non-DVC reservation.

If you cancel the non-DVC reservation, the points remain classified as reservation points, meaning they are a credit toward a non-DVC reservation only. Basically they've been converted into the cash equivalent to reserve a non-DVC resort.

There's no way to return the points to DVC since the DVC-villa used to cover the value of those points may already have been rented out on a cash basis, that's where the money comes to pay for your non-DVC resort.

You can use reservation points for any of the non-DVC resort collections, subject to booking windows.

Reservation points cannot be banked.

Hope I didn't make it too complicated.

Can borrowed points be point into a reservation status? I saw this on the internet last night.28 points in "reservation status" coming on 2.1.06. I thought that meant something was done with the 06 points but then I thought it might have been a typo.

Borrowed points used to make a non-DVC reservation that is later cancelled would also be "Reservation Points".

In this case, it sounds as though the reservation was made and cancelled for some date after Feb 1, 2006 using points current for that Use Year (Feb,2006 Use Year)- so they can't be borrowed ofr use prior to that date- but are still "Reservation points".

Thanks, Caskbill and Doc - I get what they are doing now. If I book outside DVC for Aug with a June use year and had to cancel, then I would have until the following June to reschedule using those points, as long as I use them outside, right? Is there any point at which I would cancel and loose them completely (30 days/5 days/1 day)? Would those points be limited to the 'within 60 days' limitation for making a reservation? TIA again - and yes, you guys always explain things simply and clearly ! :smooth:

The "Reservation" points have no restrictions except as noted (can only be used for non-DVC options). Once reserved, they are subject to the usual cancellation policies depending on what was reserved. DCL reservations will have a different cancellation policy than Concierge Collection or a reservation at the Poly - so you'll need to be aware of those specifics. In addition, any fees charged for these options may not be refundable- so, again, it's worthwhile having an understanding what consequences may go with the reservation you will make. Those specifics are unique to each option and are not directly related to using Reservation points from a previously cancelled event.

Regardless, you will have until the end of that Use Year to make another reservation using the points. If cancelled within 30 days (at WDW resorts) you would then have the additional restriction of the 60 day window. Just ask MS what restrictions exist for any of the non-DVC options.

Just to add - you cannot use "reservation status" points for anything in the World Passport Collection (II exchanges). DVC actually has to deposit a DVC resort week for those, so it makes sense you can't do that, either.

Best wishes -

Thanks again ! That's not as limiting as I was thinking it was - I can always reschedule in CA or use the points for a few nights at one of the WDW resorts - I think I'll go ahead and lock in this trip - DNeph and I are planning a trip to Southern CA at the end of next summer (been 16 years since I took my own family to DL when they were all young) - the reduced DLR points were just too tempting! :smooth:
You guys/gals are the best !! (God forbid I should have to dig out my papers and look this stuff up  )! :teeth:
