PTR-Cheating on Mickey w/Harry!...OMG! Only a month to go!

I am so happy that you enjoyed Napa Rose, the food looked wonderful.

This might be inappropriate but have you seen the show hoarders? I love this show. It actually inspires me to clean my place because I am terrified that it will end up like one of the places on the show. We actually live in a unit the size of a shoebox, so I can't let our place gather too many things otherwise there is no room to move, so I am really strict about the things we bring in.I am glad that fran does part with some things, it bodes well for the future.

Good luck with the door project!

For a while Fran had the show hoarders in her Tivo, but I think it might have hit to close to home. The unfortunate thing is that we have enough income and storage locations that she can continue to store way too much stuff, before the loan came through we were worried about things, at this point she has a pass to keep what she wants. However, by going through the rooms she has taken it to heart to list things on eBay and while we are only listing a pair or two of boots, 10-15 DVDs and some other stuff. We only have about 50 or 60 pairs of boots to go, but this is a start!

“The Door Project”

So after three weeks of preparation (boxing up stuff, moving things and general cleaning), the contractors arrived at 8AM Tuesday morning. There was a lot of prep work to be done before they could even get started on the actual project as we had lots of furniture that needed to be moved around before anything could happen. We started in Apartment #2, first the empty bookcases were removed and placed in a new location. The recliner chair that is going to be sold in the estate sale left the room, the copier was moved, and the hutch was moved. We had a three way rotation with TVs, if you recall we visited a friend in Tulare back in January to bring her a new TV since the HD one we gave her didn’t work on rabbit ears. We put the HD one into our 1st bedroom, moved that TV to the 2nd bedroom and will be selling the 3rd TV at the estate sale. Then we took our other flat screen TV (we have one in each of our “living rooms”) also to the estate sale place…everyone still following? Clear as mud?

So by this time, it was lunch time. The guys needed a few things from Home Depot and I realized that we needed food and I wasn’t going to be cooking it. So I tried to get us gyros from a Greek Market down the street but it looks like they might have gone out of business. :sad2: So I decided to check out this market about a block away that just opened and claims to have pizza, I decided a personal greek pizza sounded good (hmmmm was I in a mood?) It had sausage, feta, red pepper, tomatoes and extra cheese, it was really good and I may get more pizza from them, they also deliver to 1AM. :thumbsup2 Fran wanted just a cheeseburger so while my pizza was cooking I went to the local un-chain burger joint and got her a Jr Cheese burger (which is actually a lot of food).

After lunch I continued to put my glassware back into the cabinet in it’s new location. Mind you all the glassware in here is Disney related, most from my favorite restaurant out there. Since most pieces come from give aways at pricey events, there is a lot of money in glassware in that cabinet! Also we found out that we needed to clear off the hutch in our dining room because there were beer steins on top and when they did the demo for the washer and dryer those might topple, so that was another project to accomplish.

Here’s where we stand at the end of Day 1, they cut through the wall, but did not reroute the electrical. I can pass through, but not Fran since she can’t lift her legs that high. Here’s Ryan and his brother who did the demo.

This is my new view

DSCN0344.jpg

So Wednesday morning they were back at 8AM ready to resume. They rerouted the electrical and actually gave us a few extra outlets in the process. They also framed the doorway and began the demo on what will be my new stackable washer/dryer right outside my bedroom. We have an onsite laundry facility, but I told the tenants that there was no laundry after 9PM and it needs to be all done, so I have to adhere to that rule too. One tenant is on top of the laundry and our bedrooms are on either side of the laundry room. However, inside our unit we can do laundry whenever we want! :thumbsup2:

Now both of us can walk back and forth between the apartments and it has totally changed the feel of our house. We don’t live in two apartments any more, we have a five bedroom house with two kitchens a dining room, living room, family room and three bathrooms (although one bedroom will become a walk-in closet).

And here’s my dining room walls they look really bare, notice I’m not showing you the dining room because it’s been a mess since we were fumigated last Fall.

They come back tomorrow to continue the job, hopefully they will finish before next Thursday as we have plans to visit my parents next weekend!

The project is coming right along. You will feel better once it all gets done. How nice you will have a washer and dryer as well. I miss that so much. Oh well my little red wagon does a good job hauling my laundry. Cant wait to see more.

Nice pictures Alison. Sure shows the project off nicely. Hopefully it'll all be finished shortly and you can then show us that dining room.....:rolleyes1

Hey Alison! Nice pics!!

I wrote back on Leshaface's thread about the exact details of my surgery. It will be a very quick recovery and looks like I will be good as new within 3 months!! :goodvibes It will be nice to get some permanent relief.

So last Friday it didn’t appear that they did all that much, but come to find out they evidently did a lot, it just wasn’t obvious to me. To put in the washer and dryer takes a lot of behind the scenes work. This closet is right outside the second bathroom (we call it the “kids” bathroom because it has a bunch of litter boxes in it). The washer and dryer will tie into the sink drainage of the bathroom sink so they tied these two lines together.

DSCN0351.jpg

And they also hooked up the plumbing so that incoming water goes to the washer and dryer.

DSCN0350.jpg

On Saturday we also purchased the washer and dryer.

Once construction is complete, we’ll have it delivered. When we left yesterday, they were finally installing the actual door between the two apartments. We left them with a key so they are doing work today and Monday. They had to extend the right wall some, but I didn’t get a picture of the framing they did. Evidently the dry wall guy will be coming while we are gone so the extension on the wall should be complete and the door should be in place by the time we get home…I think we are in the final stretches!

Tonight sushi, sake and food porn! Well, probably not pictures tonight, but I get to consume it!

So we’re back up at the folk’s house again. The main reason for our trip during this season is that my mother’s hundreds of Iris plants bloom in the spring and she wanted us to come up and see them this year in case for some reason or another they aren’t in the house next year or can’t plant them. (My Dad has been unemployed for over a year and thinks he’s too old to get a job, and my Mom is considering retirement, so they may have to sell the house. They did a major remodel about 9-10 years ago and are still paying it off.)

We chose to come up this particular weekend because my mother was hosting the wine tasting for their group that they have been tasting wine with for 40 years. Something I was painfully reminded of last night. Normally they will taste traditional European/California wines. Maybe a night of California Merlots, or German Reislings. I guess over the 40 years they have exhausted many options, so this time my mom decided to get creative and have a Sake Tasting. There are always appetizers and so obvious choices would be sushi, edamame, postickers, scallion pancakes…triple cream cheese and smoked Wisconsin Cheddar? :rotfl2:

Here are the stars of the night.

Now Mom didn’t want anyone to see this because she bought twice as much of everything that we needed

DSCN0385.jpg

And before the party we also indulged in a little of our own dinner, being more adventurous than most of the party guests we ate raw fish

DSCN0386.jpg

After everyone had tasted all the sakes we voted on which was the best in each "class" and then voted on "Best in Show" however that was technically not determined by vote, but by which bottle was the least full. #5 won, Hananomai. Perhaps this could have been becuase Fran and I were pouring larger glasses than most and we went back to test our favorites several times to taste them side by side (I'd get her a glass of one and me a glass of one). We went back several times to make sure that #5 was our favorite! :rolleyes1

What was rather amusing about this party is that most of the women guests seemed to relish the idea of something new and different. They enjoyed the sushi and trying the sake, some had never had it or if they did only once or twice. The men folk were much less eager to embrace the odd drink and strange food. In fact one guy seemed downright hostile about the whole thing, but he kept it to himself because his wife was clearly having a good time. Only two of the couples that were there (besides my parents) were original members, and there were quite a few amusing moments. My Mom introduced one of the women, Marge, to Fran and said, “This is Alison’s partner.”

I was nearby, and she kept looking around saying, “where’s Alison?” My mom actually had to point me out to her..Wow, do I look THAT different? Then she says, “Alison!” putting her hand out similar as Walt did when he described the height of Mickey. “I remember brushing your hair, at the Arthur Fiedler concert! You were only five years old!” Shesh.

Later another lady, Jane was being introduced to Fran and she looks at me, “I didn’t catch your name.” she says.

“Alison.” I replied.

“Alison?” she asked.

“Alison.” I replied again making the gesture with my hand just above waist high.

“ALISON! Oh my gosh!

Clearly I must look nothing like my former self. :sad2:

Anyways, we’ve made some changes to the schedule, so I’m glad I didn’t tell anyone what the plans were because now I can just pretend that everything is going according to plan. Except that I just told you that. :scratchin

More later!

Alison? Where's Alison?:confused3

:scratchin You look the same to me....:rolleyes1

That's some nice looking food. I was going to ask if your mom made the rolls; and then you posted the fridge shot.
We love sushi and sashimi; even DS, tho' he keeps more to the avocado, chicken and cooked seafood rolls rather than the raw fish.

Thanks for sharing.
Not long now for your trip!

Allison who?

How strong is sake? Lots of food. I am not one for sushi, but it still looks good all the same. some day I will try sake.

Oh my, all that sushi looks so good! I love Japanese food! I never had sake though, have to try it some time. And I had a scallion pancake a couple of weeks ago for the first time...delicious!

There is a restaurant about 40 minutes from home (in Long Island) called Minado, which is a Japanese buffet. My family usually doesn't go to buffets at home, but this one is so fresh and immaculate! They have delicious sushi, hot food, lots of exotic salads, gyoza, shumai, a hibachi grill, fruits and desserts. We love going there! The food is always fresh and delicious. They are a chain, but a small one...locations are in Long Island, a couple in New Jersey and one in the Boston area I think. We had my mom's 60th surprise birthday party there in January 2010, with 80 people! It was awesome!

:lmao: :lmao: No that's what I meant when I said that we are going to whole paychecks to pick up the food for dinner. We got all the sushi stuff there, my mom got the scallion pancakes at the Farmer's Market. The potstickers were your standard Costco Freezer variety, but we made most of the dipping sauces from scratch, it was all good! The food is finally just about gone. Mom is whipping up the cheeses for our appetizers tonight.

Sake is usually about 18% alcohol. These all ranged in flavor, but for the most part they were all relatively sweet, not grape juice sweet, syrupy, but they weren't bitter like whiskey or gin. Easily sippable and as you got to the more premium sakes (the last two) they were very light. The last one was called Mu which translates in Japanese to "nothingness".

We have a place in Long Beach that is also really fresh and nice, only about $16pp for dinner and they will even do a Mongolian BBQ style dish where you pick the noodles, veggies and meat, hand your bowl to the cook and he makes it up for you.

Saturday we decided to take a small drive. When I was in High School we called this a Dam Cruise since we drove past the Stevens Creek Dam. Our HS was only about a mile away from the reservoir Dam and while it was a three mile drive home via surface streets, we could take a Dam Cruise back to my house and do it in 10 miles, but it was a much more picturesque drive. Yesterday we decided to take that trip just for the heck of it.

Here’s a shot of the reservoir. It’s one of the first natural beauties that you see on this trip.

And a shot from the picnic ground

DSCN0427.jpg

Let’s just say that this picnic ground had some underage picnicking in my day. :lmao: Of course only the finest from my parents Cellar! :rotfl2:

Now take a good close look and repeat after me, “three leaves, two on each side, one pointing out, step away, poison oak.”

The road eventually leaves the forest floor and heads up into the chapparal

DSCN0447.jpg

If you look closely you can see that the country side is suffering from “housing pollution”.

DSCN0449.jpg

Eventually you descend back into the forest floor driving down tree covered roads.

We arrived back in civilization to pick up the last of the groceries that we would need for tomorrow night’s revised agenda and menu.

Next up, plan revisions and dinner!

Looks like a beautiful area and as always your pictures are great!

Those pics are beautiful. The streams are swollen from all of the rain. But I it does make it look really nice. Your trip is almost here. :thumbsup2

That's a gorgeous drive! Which route is that? I'm going to have to add to my list for next time!

Thanks, I loved growing up in this area, there were so many beautiful tree lined routes to visit, especially once I got my DL.

I know by the time I get back home it will be a week away, I just hit single digits!

That's a gorgeous drive! Which route is that? I'm going to have to add to my list for next time!

The route is past the Stevens Creek Dam. If you're in Cupertino, take Stevens Creek Road, north, I told Fran to turn left at the stop sign and lo and behold there was a light there! :lmao: It's called Foothill Blvd, in fact you've probably seen the off ramp from the 280, but shortly turns into Stevens Canyon Road. Eventually there is a fork and you take the Mt Eden road, that is when you start to go up into the Chapparal. Mt Eden Road takes you to stop sign eventually where you have a choice right, Big Basin or left, Saratoga Sunnyvale Road. Turning right you go higher into the hills. Actually you could turn right and head up to skyline drive and take that back up the peninsula to get to the 92 and head back to Belmont, that would be a lovely drive for a day to half day. If you stopped in downtown Saratoga you could have a quaint experience similar to Half Moon bay but without the artwork!

So I might be behind on your updates and this comment is definitely a little late, but "Sake bombs anyone?" They are super good, and actually, that guy definitely would have liked it! (sounds to me like he needed one :snooty:)

I think that is the best idea though! To have a bunch of friends come over and do different tastings! Unfortunately, the only things my friends would want to taste would be beer and tequila! :lmao:

What restaurant did you get the sushi from? I'm more of a raw fish chick than a rolls chick, like you.
